Ok, so It's using a single 8gb 2400mhz ddr4 sodimm, with one free slot for an upgrade.
SSD is a Micron 1100 (sata), there are no other bay spaces.

No discrete graphics in this one, it's using the integrated Intel uhd 620.

WiFi is Intel 3165 dual band (AC)
Ethernet is a Realtek PCIe FE controller (non gigabit)
Audio is a Realtek ALC 3204 chipset
Display is 15.6" 1080p 60hz with anti glare coating (looks like a TN panel)
1x HDMI v1.4b
1x USB 2.0
2x USB 3.1 gen 1

At 2.3kg it is heavy in comparison to most modern laptops though.
Seems decent, interested to see what other people's take on it is and if there will be better deals over the next week?

rolls eyes ..... looks to the heavens....I know ...... I was correcting the OP where it was stated as having one....
I looked at this before deciding on this one due to a significantly better GPU and 2 year Amazon Warranty support.

hotukdeals.com/dea…d=7

Not heard great things on Currys Aftercare to be fair either.
For £60 you could get a 240gb SSD and additional 4gb RAM if you so choose. This would also give you a 'spare 128 GB SSD' to either sell or use in another machine.
The prices would then be within a few £s of each other, which then becomes a no-brainer for me with the significantly better GPU and warranty service offered by Amazon.

Not voted either way as this is still a good deal and may suit someone who doesn't want to add extra memory or swap out SSD, although I have to say these are erxtremely easy to do, particularly the ram.

You are right. Currys spec says no disc drive. May be the op is mistaken.
I can confirm it does have a disc drive as I seen it in store and had a chat with a colleague
i want to buy this, but currys specs are all over the place, is it actually 10 hours battery life because the same product is on ebay currys and thats saying its only up to 2 hours battery life? want to use the paypal credit on it
i mailed them on ebay and they said its 2 hour battery and no cd drive. strange

Don't even both with currys ebay support they are clueless. They don't bother to actually check the product information on the actually box instead they go on the web and copy and paste what they find as a response. I asked about a lenovo desktop if it had a dedicated graphics card as description mentioned it and they copied and pasted the product sheet from lenovo website as their response which just say upto GTX1050 meaning it might or might not.

I bought this about an hour ago, so can answer any questions.....
To confirm - it has a DVD RW drive and a 4 cell 40 w/hr battery.

Not too much 3rd party bloat, but does have McAfee and Cyberlink media suite preinstalled. Lots of pointless Dell support & update rubbish installed though, so that's getting a culling.

There's a 1 yr dropbox 20gb promo included, if that's of interest.

does it have a backlit keyboard? did it boot fast (given the i5 and ssd)?
I'm in the market for a laptop with these specs, can't say I've come across a deal better than this.

What's the speed like?

Many thanks for your detailed reply. It's good news available upgrade of RAM. So it has a built-in graphics - yeah I just wanted to know - I thought it - but no available info from this at Currys. I am on the market looking for a new laptop with these specs - Thx-
Also, just noticed on my receipt that there's an 'Intel Master Key' printed. The online promo gives you a free copy of these:

  • Sid Meier's Civilization® V (Steam key)
  • Subnautica (Steam key)
  • Fastcut (Magix serial)
  • Gas Guzzlers Extreme (GreenManGaming key, which then gives you a Steam key)
  • Painter® Essentials™ 6 (Coral serial)
  • Star Trek Online (In-game content code)
  • VideoStudio® Pro X10 (Coral serial)

Thank you very much.

How is the Full HD display? I read somewhere that it is not an IPS panel...Are the viewing angles okay?
Anyone know if this - store.hp.com/UKS…NTB

Is worth the extra £100 cost? Very similar specs.

Resolution wise it's nice and clear. It's 1080 @ 60hz. It looks like it's a TN panel to me though, rather than IPS. Viewing angles and blacks / contrast are typical of a TN. Overall I'd describe the panel as average. Pleased with the overall performance of the laptop though (it's actually a Christmas gift for my dad).

The ryzen 5 2500u is a bit slower than the 8250u, but it does have a much stronger GPU (vega 8), so if you want to game then it's a better choice. The Lenovo only has a 2 cell battery though, so wont be stellar off-lead. Everything else is basically the same.

I mentioned in another thread yesterday that I bought the 14" HP Pavilion (although not that burgandy model)
Personally I think it is worth the extra due to:

1) The display - I had a look at the 14" Pavilion yesterday and compared displays to other models including the base Inspirons. It is above average quality which I believe is a feature of Pavilion models. It's not quite Spectre / XPS quality but it is bright and viewing angles are not too bad on that IPS display.

2) The i5-8265 processor is very recent and approx 10-15% faster than the i5-8250

3) Weight - although I imagine that some of the weight difference is due to the optical drive in the Inspiron.

The general build quality is very good on the Pavilion, and the touchpad is solid - it doesn't feel hollow and is pretty quiet.

As I said in the other thread if you do go for it, I'd recommend paying the extra £50 for the 3 year carepack.

Only one more question. Does it have Gigabit Ethernet Port please? 10/100/1000 - or only 10/100. Could you check is with Speedtest or in Control Panel please? To tell the true...I went to local Currys to have a look this one.....and among many of Experts and Professionals ....you know that what I think - Noone could confirm it 100% is there inside OR not Gigabit port. I shown them details of this product some mistakes are there on internet - NO DVD drive and Backlit keyboard informations. A guy told me it is possible to turn ON/OFF backlit function - but he was not able to demonstarte it. .....And I told him ....There is DVD drive in it....but specifications says NO drive. So it is a madness a litle bit. You think they are there to help you.....but nobody is 100% what and how to say you. I asked how many slots are there for RAM - answer was 4 !!! Hmmmm. I tried to get info from Curryes FB, too. Someone wrote me NO DVD Drive and NO slots for RAM. .....What is this please? - As I wrote above there is DVD Writer in this laptop I was in the shop personally an hour ago...for have a look what and how can I decide about buying.

For general desktop use I would say you're better off keeping the £100 (or put half toward an extra 8gb dimm for one of the cheaper laptops from this thread). There's really not much between the 8250u and the 8265u and NVMe is only going to help if you're regularly doing tasks that need the high queue depths / peak throughput. The IPS screen is a plus though, although you're dropping down to a 14" on that model.

That particular laptop has a pretty small battery, so when its off lead (ie. unplugged / running on battery power), the battery life is going to be fairly short.

Just double checked - it is a Realtek FE controller, so 10/100. If GBe is particularly important, you could always pickup one of these for £16.99. Definitely has 2 ram slots (1 occupied, 1 free) & a dvd-rw.
