Is their Vostro range built better then the Inspiron?

Often they're the same more or less.... the Vostro is aimed at business and inspiron at home users. The hardware is often identical.

I've had a few Vostro desktops and they're identical to the inspiron desktops except the bios reports the motherboard as Vostro or Inspiron. My XPS 8500 desktop is identical motherboard wise) to a Vostro 470 desktop. You might find options for Inspiron and not Vostro or vice versa.

Something to consider: Inspirion being aimed at home has distance selling regulations as a consumer buyer whereas Vostro is aimed at business and could have less consumer protection. I recall ages ago that it was recommended home buyers stated "Home user" as the business name when buying from Dell business site.

Inspiron is domestic / entry level
Vostro is mid range heading towards business
Latitude is business

You’re right. The sub-brands don’t reflect quality so much, that’s the model number you want to look at:
3000-series - low-end
5000-series - mid-range/improved build quality
7000-series - high-end
9000-series - premium/XPS (but they called the latest XPS 7390/7590??)

But Inspiron is home user and Vostro for small business really, the Vostro’s also seem to have longer warranty like the Latitude whereas the Home stuff has 1 year basic C&R.

Inspiron is not exclusively low-end, the Inspiron 7000s are metal-wrapped and not far off the XPS lineup.
I've had my eye on a couple of these dells for a while. Lack of IPS is offputting though. Asked their agent on chat which simialar models have IPS but they were no help, directed me to totally different types of machine.

Is there basically a dell laptop (whether inspiron/vostro/whatever) which is very similar to this or the 14 inch but with an IPS display?

The £499 14inch HP at currys and similar 15inch at JL are bascially the spec i want but I'd rather get a dell.

I’d advise a second-hand Latitude 7490 if you can find one - I bought a mint condition one for work on eBay for £450 and they all have very good IPS FHD panels. As a bonus, the chassis is very durable, rugged and NVMe SSDs. Either that or fit your own, as 14” IPS panels are quite easy to come by and not expensive.
£461 if you use UNIDAYS
You need to signup to UNiDAYS then generate a code for DELL
It works for me !
OK if you`re a student.
Not much good otherwise.
Did you go through a link from the Unidays website

That's a result if it is but can I ask where you get the spec sheet from? the listing just says:

The links above.
Thanks alared!

Guess the question is if this arrives and somehow it isn't IPS whether you'd have reasonable grounds to return it...
It might be worth phoning them tomorrow 0800 085 4961

I don`t know why they just don`t state IPS instead of narrow border WVA
I would think you can return if the description`s false.

Thanks, though I think these prices/code are only valid till midnight tonight as there's a countdown on the page.

Yes it would be too helpful!

I'll see if I can reach them on chat

I asked the question with dell's live chat and was told that the 5000 series do not support IPS, then I found the ryzen 5 so they obviously do or did in some form. I'm not sure that dell support know anything more than we do. However if the new 5000 were IPS then why wouldn't you sell it as that.

Yes I'm inclined to agree. Obviously that spec sheet suggests otherwise but I don't think there's much guarantee that it's tied to this model version etc
The OP has got the deal`s expiry as 3rd Dec, but as you say there seems to be a countdown until midnight tonight.
This code is BLACK12, but last month it was SB12, so if it does disappear after tonight, it will be back again for BF.
,
If you click on the OP link and go to the Dell page and then scroll down below the picture of the laptop and click on "Features"
carry on scrolling to just after "dell cinema" it says:

Stay entertained
Narrow border: Narrow borders emphasize the screen, rather than the bezel, so you can watch your favorite shows or work on your latest projects in style.

Beautiful from any angle: With an FHD IPS anti-glare panel, images look good at a wide range of viewing angles, so you’re not limited to looking at the display only straight-on.

Dramatic graphics: Enjoy extra power and optimal everyday performance with NVIDIA® GeForce® MX230 discrete graphics Optional.

Yep looking at it again on a desktop definiately suggests this deal expires in a few mins.

Good find on the dell cinema /IPS tie in! I think that's strong enough evidence to return it on a not-as-described basis, esp as the Geforce card is explicitly declared "optional" which suggests IPS is standard.

No idea why the agents don't seem to know this as my experience was an exact duplicate of SweetJohnnys
I was about to buy but obviously have concerns in regard to IPS and I have had my fill of Dell customer support which let me down badly with my last Dell. So not being able to answer this time makes me think nothing has changed.
Decided to hold off pulling the trigger just now as I can't imagine this wont b repeated later this week. I've been weighing up this vs the 14inch and it gets even murkier than the 15 inch about whether that one has IPS. Checked the spec sheet and it doesn't say it does. Yet it does have dell cinema - although that doesnt mention IPS on its page....

39105663-96JoU.jpgThe deal is still there but the code is now BF12.
I think it will be on, as the OP posted, until 3rd Dec. so no big hurry.

I phoned Dell today and he checked their own field manual which he emailed and under "panel tech" it shows IPS.
He said WVA is the display and IPS is the panel.
