Useless without an SSD so make sure to buy one and install one.

The i5-8250u is nice and coupled with the 8gb ram is plenty fast.

What i would say is I think you could find a better deal with a GPU so if it were me spending ~£600 I'd be going for something, even an mx150.

I hate Dell's million and one model names / specs. A right PITA to compare at times.
Would be tempted if it had SSD which I wouldn't be without nowadays.
Can this take an SSD as well as the 2TB HDD?

Agree, utter madness to not have an SSD in a laptop with this spec.
Not for me. No ssd...
No ssd!
Decent assuming it can have an SSD put inside without taking the 2TB out or the disk drive.
I guess if you want storage and little else this would be good. But it's only got a 1080p screen and an HDD rather than SSD. I paid about this for my Dell laptop over 4 years ago which has the same amount of ram.
Pretty expensive for these days.
No one wants big storage in the world of cloud applications and cheap external hard disk
Sorry what's SSD?.

Sorry what's SSD?.

Solid state drive. Memory chips instead of a mechanical disk. Faster, less wear and tear, lighter, less battery power used.
Could someone please link me i5 equivalently priced with SSD that they would recommend over this Dell model?
I went in curry’s to purchase this today but I’m not sure I need the SSD.. I would prefer the 2TB for backing up iPhone 256gb over Smaller SSD laptops at this price..
Cheers

Why do so many people think this is so bad just because it has a HDD instead of an SSD?

You will see noticeable gains in boot up speed, app speed and storage speed with an SSD. These are cheap compared to a few years back when they were pricey.

It is much faster than a HDD, which is outdated technology.

I'd recommend anyone who needs a laptop to a) purchase one with an SSD or b) install an SSD to their machine

Thank you, sorry I posted without checking your previous post.
I’m just currently looking at the acer you referred to and curry’s have this available next day (if I order In 15 min) for £649..
Looks a lot better machine and the boot time comparisons are amazing

Link me and I'll look. Are you sure it's the same?

Will you be using for gaming or just media, browsing etc?
Hi Wubalub, It would just be for backing up phone (256gb iPhone, which I shoot loads of videos in 4K) and my girlfriend to use for office and power point
I was draw in by the 2gb hard drive on the dell but I’m guessing I’d just have to plug in the 2TB usb harddrive I already use for backing up?

Found another one.

Check this one out. Same specs as this only with an mx130 (low end graphics) and instead of slow HDD you get fast SSD.

You can plug your 2TB HDD via USB no problem.

Hope it helps and saves a bit for you.

I just found one of these ata a local cash gen shop.
I bought it for my daughter and was very surprised with it.
Sure, it was only a 1.6 but 8th gen I5 and 4 core with HT and so it was just fine for her needs and more.
I gave my son my old HP DV6 and thats an older i7 but again, at 1.6Ghz so I might give them a look to see what they are like against each other.

Anyway, yeah 8GB RAM and 2TB are plenty, but as you all know, SSD is vital these days and so I opened her up to have a look, and there is a spare RAM slot plus the SSDneeds to be the M2 Type... I dont have spare M2 type SSD so I will have to buy her one, but thats later on tonight as I need to double check on exactly what type will fit and work in it.

But tthere you are... Intel 620 graphics so it can play basic games... Not sure exactly what, but again, shedoes not care for gaming, but I have still put some on there for her, and they play fairly well enough, like UnReal Tournament and Call of Duty, theywont play at full rez and details but they stil play just fine.
