Would bite if it had an ssd, nice spec otherwise though

Great Mid/Low end gaming laptop, HEAT

There's always someone who says...

'I'd buy if it had (insert high spec item here)'

Yes, of course you would - but then the price would be bloody higher... And then you'd say 'oooooh, i'd bite if it were £50 cheaper'

An ssd at 450 lol

great price, but no CD tray? still heat!

120gb ssd is almost equal to the price of a 1TB HDD so not sure what's funny here.

Not entirely sold as for why dell downgraded their Inspron line to dual core cpu.

You're kidding aren't you?

M265 is about on par with a GT 730m, and the 4510U is a dual core ULV chip - about half as powerful as a 4700MQ.

Absolutely agree. The 4510u processor is, spec wise, garbage. It should not have been called a i7 - just adds huge confusion to the market.

Plenty of comments etc about this deal and the similar laptop here:

Exactly. For ~£20 more than the cost of a 1TB 2.5" HDD you can get a 240/256GB SSD.

Uses the weakest laptop base i7 there is, GPU is entirely useless can't handle games. No info on screen resolution or anything.

The i5 version is ~£45 less and ~13% slower.

dell e4550 similar price

i5 however

Because then someone would be complaining that 120GB is a pitiful amount of storage.

Simple enough, Dell and other manufacturers appeal to the mass-market and the mass-markets wants bigger numbers and more Gee-Bees, the average person doesn't know what an SSD will do for them so why give one - it's like 10 years ago when people were saying it should have a 7200rpm disk not a 5400rpm, the mainstream doesn't care...

ULV CPUs: less heat, less fans required therefore less failure points and a thinner machine - it's nothing more and frankly, most people can't make use of a quad-core and the current dual-cores turbo up so much there is minimal difference between those and full-voltage offerings.

I have a dell with an Inspiron i7-4510u, and whilst yes it is dual core, it seems perfectly competent. I play Battlefield 4 and compile code on it. What you get is amazing battery life, as it's a ULV part. So I get 12.5 hours idle and 6.5 wifi browsing. It's all about battery efficiency, as the average joe consumer doesn't need that much grunt.

Imho, looks like a decent mid range spec. Saying it doesn't have a high end GPU or a quad core is kind of missing the point, this laptop is £449. Some people will be ok with running their games on low/medium settings. You can check out if it'll play the games you want on notebookcheck.

Hi I tried posting the direct link when posting the deal but for some reason it reverts to the homepage.

When on the homepage click on 'for home>laptops and ultrabooks>5000 series>5000 series 15"

It is priced at £499; £449 once you enter the discount code

Cheers!
It's a shame the codes don't stack. Dell have a code that gives 5% off.

Don't know much about laptops, is there any possibility a laptop as good as this one (based on how much heat the deal is getting) will be on sale in January. Thanks in advance.

quad core overheats quite a bit and results in more problems and faulty pcs. Dual core is safe and enough for most consumers.

I believe this model does not come with a disc drive. Can someone confirm this as I have not found anything on the website saying it has one?

Any recomendations for a 4k laptop? Ie. One with a 4k screen and capable of playing and editing 4k videos? Know it wont be cheap but time for upgrade and not sure what best options are??

Valid points and replies....but it is a good deal at 450 ? Worth 150 more than an average i3 with 4GB

4K screen in laptop is something rare, adding to that horsepower to edit 4k videos is a bit overkill. You are looking for mobile workstation like dell Precision or HP Elitebook, you also can look into compal gaming laptops they have power necessary for that task.

Price wise laptop is bad choice, mobile workstation or gaming laptop is expensive, brand new with 4k screen from around £1000
in the same money you can build professional video editing desktop workstation that will last longer.

I would say not. An i3 is already costing, maybe 100 pounds on the price. An i7 4510 is an *i3* in all but name, so you are paying 150 pounds extra for what?

Yes its an ULV chip, and a good chip. But not at a premium price. YMMV. And you may want/need this. The DELL machines and outlet prices are attractive, but they have near zero top end machines (except for those that cost 3x the "good" price of the low/medium range, but an extra 4 threads of CPU power).

FYI was looking at dinopc.com - they have a good "build your own" thing on their website. A Lenovo Y50-70 vs one of these is interesting. Alas, DELL have stopped competing at the high end. (I have no affiliation with that web site - but the prices look good).

It's only about 12~% slower than an i5-4278U. The main point of this chip is it will be cherry picked for being highly efficient and will give vastly better battery life. You'll also get some premium features, like hardware virtualisation, that you won't find on i3s.

Better battery life than the quad core CPUs but not better than the U series i3 or i5.

It's an option on the 7000 series (but only the 7000) to have a backlit keyboard.

Does anyone know if it's physically possible to fit a backlit keyboard on the 5000 series?

Is there something specific about this laptop that means the deal has more heat than the HP Envy that's going for around £485. Spec wise, they seem pretty similar, with the Envy having an SSHD, slightly better GPU and an FHD screen. I'm not sure if I'm just missing something.
