The main attraction to this laptop seems to be the CPU which has 4 physical cores unlike the 2 physical cores in most U CPUs. According to benchmarks it is better than many other low power U models often used on laptops. CPU Mark scores:

Not a gamer so no idea if the Radeon is any good but presumably it at least beats integrated graphics. Hopefully someone can comment please.

The link took me to the right model when I just checked it. You're right it says "Inspiron 15 5000" at the top but I think that's just Dell's slightly confusing model number system. I assume it means it's part of the 5000 series, but the actual model is 5570. If you add it to the basket then click 'Show Full Specs' one of the fields says 'Inspiron 15 5570'.

I've been on the lookout for a new laptop around the £500 mark with Full HD, 8Gb ram, and an SSD.

I'm considering pulling the trigger on this Medion:

But wasn't sure if something better would be available around black Friday or cyber Monday.

However given the CPU in this I'm tempted to stretch my budget. I've only been looking around £500 or less so is this good value for £615 or are there any better deals around this price?

I'm in the exact position as you! Looking at around £500 but this does look decent but need more people to tell me how good it is haha

I need 8 laptops for around this price for kids aged 6 - 17 this Christmas.

Dunno whether SSD or HD given they're kids I'm leaning towards a 1TB normal hard drive, yeah I'd like SSD but worried about space

SSD all the way. It's so much faster.
Plus I assume kids will not be delicate with the machine which a hard drive will not appreciate.
A hard drive will also bog down after a while requiring a restore of windows and app reinstallation. Doing that for 1 laptop is a chore let alone 8 and takes several hours to complete.

Cloud services, external drives and a NAS are options to alleviate your potential storage issue.

I’m not sure if you’re serious, but if you’re buying eight then you don’t want to be speaking to their consumer sales team or ordering directly from the website.

They have a dedicated team for larger orders/business, that you should be able to negotiate a 15-20% discount, with three years warranty.

Thanks for the suggestion but Intel's marketing seems to be working on that one. Just because it's an i7 doesn't automatically mean it's faster. As detailed in the description above that i7-7500U has a lower benchmark than the i5 in this Dell:

i7-7500u: 5217
i5-8250u: 7547

Also the i7 is only 2 physical cores. The i5 has 4 which presumably account for the difference in benchmark. I've updated the description as forgot that important detail when I first posted.

Also presumably the Radeon 520 in the hp is slightly slower than the 530 in this Dell too?

Why would I be joking about that? I was in the trade before becoming disabled and generally speaking the people I dealt with weren't really impressed with a single one off order of 8 laptops.

It's worth a try for sure I wonder if I can leverage being ex county council with Dell or HP....

You see the SSD vs HD thing I agree lovely speed from an SSD but these are preteen kids how long before they have masses of music/video to store? Ideally I'd get a laptop with optical drive and swap the HD into that bay & put an SSD as a boot drive & best of both then but with so many laptops without optical drives now that's not always an option either.

I suppose with a 256GB SSD they'd be OK for a good while anyway...

Ok so a recent gen i5 plus 256GB SSD & 15" full HD screen well that narrows it down...

Higher number isn't always faster. In this case a i7 7500U is slower than the Dell i5 above

What's the difference between the new Inspiron 15 5000 series and the new 7000 series?

do they have another space (slot) so I could I add a internal HDD? thanks

Thanks OP. Normally I would not interest with any U series laptop, after reading OP thread, this seems interesting.

Usually only laptops with an optical drive have a second bay, you can buy a fake optical drive to convert it into a hard drive bay. My old Probook has an SSD & a hard drive.

I'm waiting to hear back from my work IT department if we're eligible for this:

dell.com/lea…unt

If I am then an extra 10% off would have me sold on this, assuming the codes stack. Anyone know if you can stack codes on the Dell site? Or used the employee discount with another code?

I'd never heard of it before until I saw it linked on the Dell site but worth checking if you're eligible if you have Dell machines at your workplace.

Any chance you can give a direct link to this ?

Obviously they aren't of much use to a touch typist.
But if you have flagging eye-site then night time vision can be impaired so backlit keys are great; I wouldn't be without one.
You can disable it so it's not a battery drain for those that don't need it.

Same as me. Depends what's important to you. I suspect you'll find cheaper deals with similar spec but not necessarily with this particular CPU.

I'll be doing occasional software development on mine so the extra speed and physical cores have got me tempted by this.

I was wondering that too. Probably worth checking in a week or so.

So there's a few things that I'm still wondering about before making my mind up that maybe someone in the community can advise.

What are Dell like for quality these days? In particular does anyone with a recent Inspiron 5000 laptop have any feedback? I've not had a new Dell for several years.

What's the Radeon 530 graphics like?

I bought a 55 series Inspiron earlier this year, very impressed, work latitude is also very nice, now I'm only looking at Dell for my next purchase. When I wandered round John Lewis I preferred Dell to the other brands.

Radeon 530 for gaming? do a quick you tube search to see what settings you can expect.

You'd want one that is a clean install of Windows or one taken very soon after meaning you'll still have to copy over any data and reinstall any programs since the image was taken.

According to Notebookcheck, the Radeon 530 scores just below an NVidia Geforce 940M, which is now a basic chipset, but still way better than Intel's on-board graphics.
There are now several better Geforces: 950, 960, 970, 980, 1050, 1050ti, 1060 and more, but these are all more expensive.
So this Radeon should handle older games reasonably well, but not recent stuff, unless at low res/ detail settings.
Hope this helps.

You are right. Is better to buy a 5Tb+ Could storage rather than to invest in each laptop in part.

Oh, Shucks!
And I had such high hopes for this one!

Just found it only has a TN screen; I am totally sold on IPS, because I like to view my laptop from different angles rather than via a narrow imaginary viewing cone.
Apart from that and the middling AMD GPU, a great spec. I am hoping that the i5-8250 will surface in a few other machines soon.
Otherwise, I'll have to keep looking.

A 10 second Google "dell inspiron 15 5570 review" delivers this
"...Having a sharp Full HD 1920×1080-pixel display resolution instead of the budget HD 1366×768 is a good selling point of the Dell Inspiron 15 5000 5570 / i5570. The same applies to optional touch-screen support. But, the screen is based on TN technology, meaning it lacks IPS tech for wide viewing angles."
