Not the best, in simple terms, you get what you pay for (although Dell is good quality)

No good for gaming - Gamers will tell you more ,but you aren't going to get a marginally acceptable gaming laptop for under £600 .This one acceptable as a starter computer ,but dont expect too much other than basic browsing ,email etc .

Yes, I was thinking about the quality aspect of it. He usually has Toshiba and has had nothing but trouble with windows 8. Thanks for your help.

Ok, im considering buying a laptop for my daughter ready for when she goes to secondary school, i presume this is ok for office etc, would it play minecraft ok ? that's the only game she really plays

Does anyone know of any decent deals on gaming laptops at the moment?

more than enough for basic needs minecraft also doesn't require lots of resources. just make sure you lock it down to prevent viruses and such so create a user account for her and keep the admin account for you to access in order to maintain the system.

is your son on the move often? gaming laptops are only good for portability. other wise a good desktop PC with a monitor is a better choice and more value for money.

Has it got camera?

heat. Just bought for parents who require basic specs for fbook, emails and the occasional streaming. This is okay for that right?

Mental, independent retailers are going to go out of business with this Windows with Bing lark, how can we compete!

Yes, also the HDD and RAM are easily changed, there's a panel underneath the laptop.

Absolutely, if you can affford say a 128GB or 256GB SSD and clone over the old drive to the new, it will be quite nice and fast. I suggest not using Chrome with this CPU as Chrome is terrible for video acceleration. I mean really terrible, use Firefox or IE11 instead.

While I usually have something to moan about on these cheap laptops even I'm struggling at this price. Dell must be making next to nothing on these.

Its the Dacia Sandero of laptops. Cheap and cheerful but does the job.

Hot from me.

Really tempted ahhhhhhh
Seems a great price for a new laptop with warranty etc

£30 for the 2 years in home warranty

Meh ... its a Celeron ... nuff said.

I was tempted by this until I read it has no optical drive - does that mean it can't play disks at all?

This won't play minecraft. Unless you need to carry around the laptop to school and back, get a desktop. Laptops are double the price for half the power generally.

celeron dualcore? tablet power.

I have a Toshiba C850; 1.8GHz processor, 4GB RAM, 320gb HD, would I notice a considerable difference purchasing this? Thinking of upgrading as it's a bit slow for anything more than browsing.

It depends how old the game is. You should be good for the original Civilization, for example. But don't expect to play any of the sequels...

Cracking price for some basic surfing activities & certainly better value than a Chromebook.

No ethernet & USB3 limits its appeal though and the chiclet keyboard will irritate if you're used to a proper one.

"max RAM 8GB" ?! Is this the noughties?

Seriously tempted by the good price for Win8 lappy. Will resist because of the soldered n2830 and 8Gb RAM limit. Now they will all sell before I can think twice.

Would this run windows office okay?

He is not on the move much but it's a matter of space in his bedroom which is why I was thinking sticking to a laptop. If I can convince him to throw some of his junk out, a desk top might be an option.

It comes with a Microsoft Office 2013 trial, if that's what you mean?

He has so many games. I'm probably better off paying more but still going for Dell. Most people speak highly of Dell.

My girlfriend is looking for a laptop at around £250 and by adding the office to this it takes it to around £250, just wondering would it still run okay by installing it to to the laptop or would it slow it down? Thanks

Was thinking about getting this to see if I can get on with win 8.1 before my 3 year old Fujitsu I3 expires . However on looking closer it is really basic as posters have pointed out . No optical drive ,no bluetooth and no USB3 , coupled with the low spec CPU and memory make it a bit of a White Elephant . Think I'll wait a bit . Hopefully in the next year SSD hard drive and Windows 9 will be available on a decent spec sub £400 Laptop.

Its a really good point, but do bear in mind you can add these via USB adapter cards. Not ideal as it means carrying it wth you and having it hanging out of the back of the laptop.

Really can see any reason to upgrade above the 4gb included. Your not going to be doing anything RAM intensive on a machine of this type.

or you could just teach them how to use equipment properly?

Even less at some tasks: http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Z3740D-vs-Intel-Celeron-N2830

The Z3740D is the chip in the Venue 8 Pro.

That's a ridiculous deal. Windows 8 alone is probably 100 quid.
