Just got an XPS L701x i5 560M from Dell outlet for the same price as this. Granted its a refurb, but it should be faster. Sorry - cold from me.

can get faster laptops for this price

Am after a laptop for about 500 for my dad, with i5 cpu 4gb of ram

dell preferable

Are people actually comparing this to laptops with the old "i" processors. Lol.

Well on the up it claims to have USB 3, and it's not the 55 series chipset so an SSD will perform correctly. Something to be aware of is there have apparently been surprisingly large failure rates with the SB platform,

That said LightPeak (Thunderbolt for Applelites) has started rolling out and is superior across the board to USB 3.

Thanks for the useful links...

This particular i3 is not actually all that special in terms of pure number crunching. Same TDP and NM process as previous gen also.

Have a look at the Dell outlet ones which are much cheaper.

This post is for the new N5110 models with the Sandy Bridge cpu and USB3 - not the old model.

This 2nd gen i3 is faster than some 1st i5 and equal with quite a few it's a good purchase for the price
check benchmarks here cpubenchmark.net/cpu…php

e.g here are some figures from the website i have pasted the i3 vs some i5 which i think are first gen the i5 460m is quite common in my opinon
the first number is better if it's higher and the second figure is if it's lower

Intel Core i3-2310M @ 2.10GHz 2709 220
Intel Core i5 430M @ 2.27GHz 2361 256
Intel Core i5 430UM @ 1.20GHz 1186 533
Intel Core i5 450M @ 2.40GHz 2479 247
Intel Core i5 460M @ 2.53GHz 2630 230
