I hate integrated video
Is this good for just surfing the web, emails and ebanking, etc. No games, no movies? Thanks

Yes but so are other laptops that cost much less than this.

Many thanks, don't really know much about laptops, just use for surfing web, online purchases, banking mainly! A bit of skype and maybe a bit of catch up tv. Screen size is good and like the 3yr warranty. Don't mind the price as we usually only change laptop about every 4/5 years. Thanks for you input, might have another wee look around!
Integrates graphics are using poo. But the Intel HD 5000 series Aren't too bad. Not brilliant, but fine for video playback.
Truelife FHD (1920 x 1080) version on offer direct from Dell for only £50 more, until 7/12/2015 ...

Bought a Dell Inspiron 17-3721 in 2013 new for £350 with

Intel® Core™ i5-3337U (3M Cache, up to 2.7 GHz)
6GB RAM 1600MHz
1TB HDD
17.3 inch High Definition+ (1600 x 900)

How could this thing still price at £500 today with not much improvement????
It is still U version i5, no FHD, no SSD, only integrated graphic card, not a prestige model, other than 17 inch, why should it be priced at £500.

There must be something better for £500.

Ice cold.

I could not agree more with Trevanator.

If you do not have to have 17 inch, you are looking for around £300 for 15.6 or 14 inch with similar specs.

I have the i7-5500u and nvidia 840m graphics variant. The screen and everything else is the same though.

I love it, the Screen is bright and although not IPS has good viewing angles and the colour accuracy is good. It's fast and will do everything you want, even with the slightly slower i5 with ease. Unless you are running autocad, photoshop and 10 chrome tabs it won't even stress it out. Support will be great since it is John Lewis. Better than Dell's choice of courier for repairs, UPS is awful. Dell themselves are very responsive though.
Movies won't be in full HD but at this screen size it's fine to have 900p. the screen is fairly large too.

Graphics won't be the best but integrated graphics are able to run most semi-modern games on low settings and maybe medium without mods for things like minecraft. Hope this helps.

Look at hisChromebook 2 for £150.

Was looking at a laptop for my dad. All he does it web browsing and emails.
After reading the comments on that deal, the previous 3 or 4 on here then an hour of youtube videos they look the best price for basic computing. Noted that Skype does not work on these with video and audio, only text unless you are willing to mess about getting it working.

Look at this video for the basics of a Chromebook and decide if its enough for your needs.Chromebook For Beginners
At that price demand a graphics card!

Your welcome, and Seasons Greetings!
I hate it when people try and give false impressions of a product. I hear people far to often saying things like "ooh you don't want that, integrated graphics just won't run games. Oh that i7, isn't a "true" I7 it's just a C**p dual core cpu."
considering that my last computer was a pentium mobile powered acer and that nearly did everything I needed (I'm a bit of a power user so that's impressive in itself. Most computers will do almost everything now. The only games off the top of my head that this and mine won't run is Crysis 3 and Arkham knight. both games make a lot of computers cry though so

Appreciate your knowledge, thanks again!
Yeah demand a graphics card, that'll really make your Excel spreadsheets fly... Of course, every person in the world buying a computer, laptop especially, is a seasoned video gamer..
I got this same spec last year (June) with full-hd touch screen & 4510U for 540. You should wait for Dell offers and buy directly from them.
My brother has one of these, the screen quality is terrible, it's just unacceptable. Low viewing angles, poor colours, avoid.

I purchased this for £450 by haggling 10% discount with Dell 3 months ago, wanted a 17 inch screen.
Fully agree terrible screen quality, blacks appear grey, hardly see anything at 90 degrees. This is worse than my 7 year Dell that I had to replace. Don't like the screen at all. I use it for word, surfing, emails and can't even do that as youtube videos are just poor on this screen.
If you dont need 17 inch screen, there's a hp 250 i5 win10 4gb ram 500gb hdd laptop on ebay for £ 275 brand new.
