Wow! That is crazy cheap! I just bought one just like that except 2.0 ghz and 200 gb (7200 rpm) from dell outlet last week for £472 and I thought that was a great deal!

Voted HOT, good spec for a good price.

Not a bad price, but note that this isn't Core2Duo

voted hot for price

My friend's got this, excellent machine.

woah 8600 in a laptop
but i'm not sure the processor is good enough for near to intense gaming

still a good deal though

The Pentium Dual Core actually has a fully fledged Core 2 Duo core inside. It is branded as a Pentium Dual Core as it has smaller level 2 cache and the stock FSB speed is 800MHz although this is easily clocked to 1333MHz found in COre 2 Duo branded processors.

Good deal, but would be better with a C2D slapped in with 2MB cache etc. Note that the 17" model has a full-size keypad on the right-hand side of the keyboard too iirc.

For some reason the exact same laptop is nearly £100 more if brought direct from dell

Anyone know the resolution of the screen?

voted hot but as you notice this is not Core 2 Duo. If you want to buy something now it is better to buy the newest spec possible.

So are you telling me that my recently bought Dell is about to die?

Seems like a fair price to me for use on a desktop......:thumbsup:

The standard screen resolution for this machine from dell is 1440 x 900 WXG+ so I would assume it is the same

Hi Just tried to use the code and it's not working...Anyone else tried it? Is it working for you? Thanks

I dont like Dell anyway.......after having 1 and running into problems and Dells dire help line.

This is an older cpu anyway not the core 2 duo.

After reading some right-ups I wouldn't bother. There are some pretty good machines out there at this or near this price for what would be IMO a better deal.

I was looking for the screen resolution, 1440x900 just doesn't cut it for me, especially on a 17".

CPU is bit slow, but eveything else is very good!

this IS a dual core processor, T2390 or SLA4H

slower front side bus and smaller L2 cache than latest versions but a dual core all the same...

to all those that will say Core 2 Duo and Dual core cetriino and centrino duo etc. there all just branding, if the Processor model number beings with:
T = Mobile dual core
E = Desktop Dual core
Q = Desktop quad core

Yeah its a dual core cpu, but its based on the older 'core duo' not the 'core 2 duo' which is what you want. The original intel dual core cpu's (core duo) sucked and were hammered in every test by the old athlon 64 x2 dual core chips. Core 2 duo chips are far better than athlon 64 x2, which are better than Core duo chips.. Hope that makes sense.. :whistling:

Got a 3 GB of RAM and 160GB HDD for

excellent offer i would give it 10/10 for its price and value for money voted hot

Hi Ctoumi...please provide more details on your offer. I am interested in buying that offer..thanks in advance.

This is a really first class price on this machine.

OK, so the dual cores are slightly slower than the Core2duos but I genuinely wonder how many people would notice the difference most of the time.

My wife and I each have the Dell 9400 which is the model before this. She has a Dual Core version and I have a Core2Duo version. The rest of the specs are pretty much the same. Because we do most of our gaming on our Xbox 360, our PCs are used for more sedate tasks like surfing, viewing photos, typing letters etc. For these tasks, there is no discernable difference between the performance of the two machines.

For most people, this machine will be more than fast enough and is an absolute bargain price. As has been pointed out, you would pay more for this machine from Dell which gives you a pretty good idea of the value.

No, the Pentium Dual Core is NOT based on the Core Duo. It uses the same core as the Core 2 Duo. Also Pentium Dual Core is NOT an older processor than the Core 2 Duo. It is newer. It was released as a cut down version of the Core 2 Duo in order to compete with AMD at the lower end of the market.

The difference between Pentium Dual Core and Core 2 Duo is that the Pentium Dual Core is limited to an 800 MHz FSB and it has lower 2nd level cache. Other than that both processors make use of the Core 2 Duo's prediction branching, sharing of level 2 cache memory and multiple instructions per clock cycle.

Is this one on PCworld worth the extra £100?

You said "Pentium Dual Core is NOT based on the Core Duo. It uses the same core as the Core 2 Duo. Also Pentium Dual Core is NOT an older processor than the Core 2 Duo!"

Do you have proof of that cos I have just been on the Intel site and there is no mention of this cpu being modeled on the same inter core 2 cpu.

And, form what I have found it seems this cpu is infact an older model cpu

Can you please find some proof cos I think you are wrong

Thanks

I was an IT Journalist of 14 years and reviewed all sorts of CPUs. I know the Pentium Dual Core is based on Allendale core - the same as used in earlier Core 2 Duos (latest 45 nm Core 2 Duos are based on Wolfdale core).

That Intel link does NOT mention that it is based on Core Duo nor Core 2 Duo technology but does state that it is the newest addition to their CPU range - consequently it is NOT an older processor although it is based on older 65 nm manufacturing process. How did you reach the conclusion that it is based on Core Duo technology?

Hi Elliott,

What link was that?

I did not post a link.......I talked to the people on the Intel site....

:-D

More reading here:

All mention the same Allendale cores used in the processors with the Core 2 Duo moniker.

This link refers to the T2390 CPU using the Merom core (laptop's equivalent of the Allendale core):

en.wikipedia.org/wik…ors

If you click the highlighted word "Merom-1M" in the article you will be cross referenced to another article which lists Merom as well as Allendale as part of the Core 2 Duo family.

Great deal - voted hot.

Next best I can find is the refurbished Packard Bell EasyNote MB88-P-003 at PC World and Dixons for £419.99 (before the discount code) using ]PC Checker which has a Core 2 Duo T5450 Processor but has a smaller 15" screen but I would go for the Dell over the Packard Bell in terms of build quality etc :whistling:

voted hot,

i just brought one, i couldnt get the discount and collect instore, so just went for delivery
