Is 4GB the maximum RAM that this machine can handle? Dell's website is not always to clear about memory--the motherboard on my existing Dell turned out not to let me use all the installed memory, so I'm being cautious. Struggling to find a not too expensive Dell machine that can handle 8-16GB of RAM using 64 bit XP or Vista. The Precision machines look good, but they're not so cheap.

Any advice appreciated.

The max memory a 530 can address is 4gig, its a chipset issue I think although 32bit OS can only see 3.5gig anyway as you already know.
The manaul with full specs for the 530 is here

Take a look at dell outlet for a precision base unit, you might get lucky there with a cheap one.

Thanks for that. I'll give the Outlet a try.

Do you know if the 128 graphics cards has dual output ie DVI and VGA to run 2 monitors?

The HD 240 pro has 1xVGA and 1xDVI

Its actually £10.62, have you tried adding it to your selection? give that a try ;-)

strange. Just tried again. 529 std and as soon as i add it, it goes to 566.88

Sorry ignore me. IM selecting the wrong logitec pack.. I got it now....

if i order today when do you think it will be delivered???

Hi Costanza. I jsut spoke to sales guy. Earliest delivery is 4th Jan. My order is in now. Thanks MikeT for the info. Managed to haggle a little extra as well

which processor of the two is the better one?

Nice deal.. shame I've got no more money

i'm always a bit dubious of dells, you can't upgrade them that easily - often the graphics card is onboard and there's no free slot for an up to date one

Is it just me then that cant find Quad-Core ones of this pc just dual core ones?

anyone know if I can put a PCI grsaphics card in this.....as I have a colourgraphic 4 way Digital card for work purposes..really wanna buy a new machine sometime soon but somehting that can handle this card as a new PCI e one is gonna cost me £1300 ...which is not good

They don't normally come with a free PCI slot to enable you to put your own Graphics card in.

Its got a 128MB ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro graphics card in the 16x pci express slot at the moment so there wont be a spare x16 slot, but pull the card and put your own in if you wish.
It will also have up to 2 pci slots free so if you have other video cards you may well be able to make use of one of them for that purpose.

See post #8 for a link to the manual with full specs.

yeah, which one is the better?

The Viiv has some marketing tricks, wiki for full details, Quote:

Just a very basic question: Does Quad-Core PCs have an advatange over the Dual-Core ones, espically for people going to use them for programing and scientific computing.

Thank in advance for any response>>>

I have been using a Quad core now for 2 months and TBH am not that impressed with everyday windows tasks. Gaming capabilities always boil down to the GFX card IMO...

Only advantage over dualcore is the timming of encoding software etc, scanning harddrive and stuff, this is a minimal difference(30seconds on say a 10min scan). Id say wait, new cpu on a 45nm silicon chip out starting next year, bring prices down a bit and they are better/cheaper. Id stick with dual core unless your a programmer, gamers will not benefit, crysis and supreme commander can handel quad cores but with minimal improvements.

Hope this helps.
Not a bad deal tbh, i normally hate dell for the expensive pieces of ****, but including softwar it aint to bad, voted hot

There are few things to note. I read somewhere couple of months ago.
Quad core is not really a quad core. this is 2 dualcore working in parallel. Now you will argue that it is 4 processor. yes there are 4 processor but memory (cache ) is not shared between 2 dual cores.
sharing cache is one of the reason for dual core's performance.
I think motherboard has also a great role to play when it comes to take best advantage from your pc. which we people ignore and dell dont even mention.
As someone else said Graphic card etc are very important for gaming.

Now as far as programming in .net, i guess you will be doing self learning or small application. processing not more than few thousand records. for these purpose i guess this pc is fine. However. I am waiting for 1st quarter of 2008 when Intel will launch Q9300 processor. 45 nanometer based processor.
tomshardware.com/200…tml
As you can see overclocking is much easier on new processor and I read somewhere it will be in similar price range of Q6600.
moreover I would see 15 - 2-0% price drop on intel's other processor around April / May.
This post is a good find by Mike (as always) however I can wait for 6 months.
Mike and other please correct me if I am wrong about sharing cache etc
Cheers

Who does dell use for delivery?

their courier service is very good they use a company starts with welsh but they are far better than HDNL etc

Are there any dell discount codes available ?

I tried previously with the Indian call centre staff at dell to haggle on the price but they wont budge. what things do you have to say in order for them to reduce the price?

By the way does anyone know if dell computers come with a silver keyboard and mouse??

Whoever buys this computer isn't going to indulge in the pleasures of overclocking my friend. Also the rumour mill (see today's InQ) says that Intel might push release date of its next batch of new processors further since there's no need for it now as the competition is in a mess.

Nice one mike ! Excellent price for Quad - Core, but for people who like graphics, little less speed and a massive 22" screen try Mike's other fantastic deal on the Vostro 200 and its at a bargain price 378.95 (around that anyway) >
P.S: You dont work for Dell, you OWN THEM! XD:), or atleast should work for them (if your not the owner).
