Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium SP1 (64 BIT) free upgrade

its a pity u cant upgrade the memory with ram being so cheap i will wait until the have windows 7 preinstalled
so didnt vote

You can upgrade to 8gig ram for an extra £70. Does that help?

Hot by me by the way.

No it doesnt help. 32bit windows only supports up to 3gb of ram.

It doesn't help with 32 bit windows, since more than 3gb is useless.

This deal does let you order 64bit for the same price though.

This might be a decent PC for browsing the net if you don't already have a monitor, but don't try playing any fancy games on it, and with the slim case it's not going to be possible to fit a good graphics card in (the included radeon 4350 is barely better than integrated graphics).

Very tempted by this.

Anyone know if the graphics card would present a problem for some home video editing (mini dv tapes)?

no it wouldn't

you need dual screens brah

I got one of these and you need a narrower card called a 'low profile card. I had to get a different soundcard from ebuyer cause could not get skype to work with hd audio. the card itself was not low profile and i got the bracket to mount to case from creative labs website, bout 7 pounds, not sure how the graphics would work as some cards seem huge so that won't work. I got a decent card fitted when i bought it, but looking back would not have bothered. I should have just got the graphics on the m/board and if i decided to upgrade later i could have. That aside mine has a noisy fan, and i'm not sure whether its worth the hassle getting them to fix it. It looks brillant, takes up less space and is easy wired up to a big tv, still not sorted out the sound though if anyone knows how to.

Probably card upgrade options, they are available. they are low profile cards

After 4 hours managed to order it in Spain, cannot order from the UK site, must have the Spanish site, but you cannot have english (how difficult would it be for dell to allow multi-language on a site).
They had a similar offer on this model, 250 euros off, free delivery, but they had a lower hard disk 500Gb (I upped to 1Tb) only 3gb of memory (I upped to 4) a better monitor 21" HD 1080 (I upped to 23" HD 1080 fancy thing) other items the same, also found a 5% spanish code through google. Came out about £630 at todays rate mainly due to the monitor & Hard Disk upgrades.

Thanks, rep added for help with my question.

OK, so if the graphics card is fine for video editing, can I ask another question that maybe you or someone else could answer:

This slim- tower business and the possible difficulties with expansion slots is confusing me a tad. I have gone through all the personalisation options on the deal and been through the specifications that seem to relate to the overall model - 545s. I can't see any mention of a firewire port, either included or as an option. Is this easy to add separately and does the model have the necessary expansion slot I would need?

Thanks for any help or advice anyone can add.

Anyone able to help with my question above? Thanks in advance.

There are 2 pci slots on this base unit, I dont think either is filled unless you spec'd something other than the standard setup. Just find a half height pci firewire card and pop it in the slot. Should work fine.
Some dells have a firewire slot in the front panel along with the audio and card reader though it doesnt mention one in the specs for this model.

There is one FireWire port at the back. You can check it out by going to the Dell website, finding the Studio Slim page and clicking on 'Closer Look'. Or just ]click here.

Such a great deal, been waiting for something like this for a long time now.

But I have one question, should I go for the 64bit windows? How does this affect future software purchases (if at all) and what are the main differences?

Thanks

TQ

Hi Guys,
I wanted to ask whether i'll be able to run my monitor (via dvi 1920 x 1080) and my HD TV (via the other output...what is this btw?? This will be running at 1280 x 768 or 720p/1080i) comfortably without struugle?

Cheers,

Go for 64bit.

32bit can only use a maximum of 3GB RAM so no matter how high you increase your memory, it'll always be stuck at 3GB on Windows. Whereas 64bit can use more.

Yep. Some 32bit software work fine on 64bit while others don't. When installing software, make sure it's compatible with 64bit. Usually applications will have an alternative 64bit version. Usually.

Thanks MikeT, I pointed this deal out to my boss yesterday. I didn't think he went ahead but he came in this morning and announced he bought it last night with the upgrade to 23" monitor

Not intended for gaming use so a great spec for the price.

Delivery is bloody Sluggish.I thought it was bad enough when it said 22nd September, but now it's gone to 7th October. Bloody hell - it's costing £20 for delivery as well.

The scary Dell computer rang us up, ours is scheduled to arrive today.
Probably been a much better deal during this ridiculous wait.

Edit: Just arrived, shame the desk is so packed there's nowhere to set it up.
