Upgrades:
Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium add £23.50

256MB ATI® Mobility™ Radeon® X1400 HyperMemory™ graphics card add £47.00

9 Cell, 85Whr Lithium Ion Primary Battery add £23.50

Thats getting very close to my ideal laptop. Think I will wait a bit longer, see what appears over the next few weeks. I would maybe go for this if it was £500 and then do the upgrades to Premium/256 mB GPU and 2 Gig ram.
Thanks for the heads up as usual MikeT

Sorry to butt in on this thread.

I've got an Inspiron 6400 very similar to the one mentioned, except it has the standard integrated graphics.

I'm considering the Vista upgrade, so is there anything I can do retrospectively about the graphics, i.e. can I fit a better card into the machine?

Thanks

Jim

Does Vista Home Basic have the Aero interface? If not, I don't really see the point of upgrading.

Go here for Vista Comparisons:

]piggydude Sorry no you cant as the graphics is part of the motherboard.

Vista basic does not have aero.

Thanks Mike.

Looks like I'll be staying with XP for a while then. :-(

Cheers

Jim

I installed skype on some of our office DELL laptops.
What hapenned to the mic sockets built in.
Cant see any options for this.
Guess they have to carry around an external headset.
Funny how other brands still have mic sockets.

Well there is one option but it would probably blow your budget and defeats the purpose of having a portable PC.

Asus have released this external GPU thing that you can connect to your laptop. An interesting piece of tech, but I think only for extreme laptop gamer geeks.

Does this spec have;

bluetooth?

true brite TFT?

firewire?

Will it read my sony card from my digital camera?

Is the wireless activated by a switch?

I don't like the silver and white on this machine.

Apologies for all the questions

All you ever wanted to know about the Inspiron 6400 Here

Thanks spudgun.

You're right, the Asus thing would bust the budget somewhat.

I think I'll have to stick with the 6400 for a couple of years and then see what's about then. I'm happy enough with XP I guess, I'm just kicking myself that I didn't future proof this machine when I bought it a couple of months ago.

Cheers

Jim
