Can't understand why this deal isn't getting more attention. In my view this 6400 deal is far better than the 1501 deals posted. Am I missing something?

The new Vostro laptop deals are better though if you want a better spec.

Your missing nothing, it is a very nice deal. The 6400 has a firewire port too that the 1501 doesnt have.

Out of interest, how does the pentium dual 1.86 compare to the AMD tk53 when playing flight simulkator x?

both will be limited by the GPU on laptops, but the intel dual core is a better cpu than the tk53

Is this a Vista only deal, I would prefer to go for XP.

Thanks Mike T - you're a star!

Is it worth upgrading the ram to the faster stuff for £17. I don't get it, if the CPU runs on a 533mhz bus, what's the point in upgrading the ram to 667? I thought it wouldn't make any difference?

Also, I know this chip is better than the AMD counterpart posted in the other thread, but in real world terms - by how much?

I like this deal - thanks MikeT.

I am thinking about adding TrueLife screen £11.75 and Bluetooth £11.75 = £410.07. But should I go for the 9 cell battery £23.50 or stay with the 6 cell? This will mostly be used around the house, so easy reach of a power point, with ocassional use whilst travelling (on holidays, etc). How long will a 6 cell vs 9 cell battery last and does the 9 cell protrude or fit inside the casing?

You are better off not buying the truelife screen, it's a nightmare, i so wish my laptop did'nt have it, upgrade the battery tho.

You and I both wish!

Unfortunately, as soon as Dell put the 6400 at end of life the graphics options were withdrawn.

Hi Tony

Our household really likes the truelife screens from Dell but I know some people who find them a little too reflective. For £11.75 extra I would defintely get one.

As far as battery is concerned, I have just taken delivery of a 6400 from Dell Outlet which has the 9 cell battery. I don't know exactly how much extra battery it will give, but I can tell you that it does stick out from the bottom of the laptop, but not by much and certainly not more than the height of the rubber feet of the laptop.

Personally, I really like the look of the 6400 and would buy this ahead of the bottom of the range vostro everytime. Besides having the intel dual core which is better than the AMD TK chip, the firewire port was important to me.

I ordered 1 for my daughters 16th birthday and thought it a worthwile investment in the truelife screed. This lappy is a bargain with the free delivery - jsut a shame it takes so long to get built and delivered.

I recently ordered a dell 6400 laptop over the phone, within 15 hrs I cancelled the order and a little later that day proceeded to place a new order only to find that they had taken the original money and dell cs saying they have no record of taking it. I did provide a bank statement and still to this day i am still waiting for some manager to call me back. I am on the case everyday and getting no where fast. Finally they have admitted to taking the funds and are telling me it will be at least 10 working days till I get the money back.
No compensation or apology from anyone to date let alone my £400. Any advice on how to speed this up? Please help as this has been going on for nearly 2 weeks now.

If youve got the cancellation confirmation, why not speak to your bank/c.card see if they can help?

I am not able to decide between this deal(N08643XP) and the N0810003 Vostro 1000 £351.32 deal (AMD Athlon TK53).

This Inspiron 6400 is definitely better in terms of features, but my mates told me that it is quite bulky and will weigh between 2.5 to 2.8 kgs.

Does anyone have any idea that how much will the Vostro 1000 N0810003 weigh?:?

Thats the problem, little old naive me was told I'd be sent one but I still haven't recieved it. i was even told they had no record of me on the system. Someone else also told me my laptop had been delivered. So many lies. Long and short of it, I am now getting back my money but it will be ages away and no form of compo offered or apology. Just wondering if anyone else has had any issues and if so how they have dealt with it.

Bloody Typical!!

I placed an order last week for a 6400 last week which should be on Tuesday and paid £474 for it!!
]http//ti…yj2

I phoned Dell this afternoon to see if there was anyway they could refund he difference, and they have advised me phone back on Tuesday when I receive the Laptop and arrange collection and once returned the agreement will be canceled.

:-(

Tried ringing Dell brandishing the aldi £460 laptop (as it's practically the same spec) and trying to get this one with the 3 year warranty + carry case for around that price but got a fairly uninterested Indian fella tell me that I couldn't compaire a 'local brand' to a dell!! No matter how many times I tried to tell him it wasn't a local brand.

Best he'd do was throw the carry case in for £502.90 or sell the laptop on it's own for £479 and wouldn't give any deals if I didn't have the warranty :-( I politely told him thanks but no thanks!

Am I being unreasonable trying to get a £502 laptop for £460 with the warranty and a carry case (and maybe more!) thrown in?

Try that sort of trick in Tesco's at the till with your weekly shop, or at the petrol station after filling up, call HP or Acer and ask for discount on an order. I think Dell are being more than reasonable in wanting you to increase the value of your order before giving anything away.

The web prices are pretty good to start with or they wouldnt be listed here, its only because dell have been flexible to try and keep customers happy that there seems now to be a bent towards trying to get them to sell at less than listed price on an everyday basis.

Fair point Mike but if I was spending £400-£500 in one shop at Tescos I'd fancy there would be room for 'negotiations'!

Imo the £120 odd for the 3 year warranty is practically pure profit as how many ever claim on it? So there's £120 they've got room for manoeuvre on straight away, fair enough they wouldn't move on the minimum warranty price as there probably isn't much profit in it alone.

But they could have had me wasting £80 on a warranty I don't really want instead I'll just buy it off the website with the 1 year warranty for £387 and the quidco.

does anyone have one of these, if so can they give some feedback on it. maybe provide the vista rating score. i am returning my vostro as i am unhappy with the amd cpu. rep for help given.

the Intel dual core you speak of t2*** is the older Intel model dual cores, which are not faster than the amd chips.

i was really thinking of getting this until i realised it wasn’t the new "core" architecture processor but the older "netburst" architecture.

now its this laptop which looks better, or the same spec vostro amd chip one which is about £30 cheaper.

I have never used the new bottom end AMD processors, e.g. the TK53, nor seen any detialed reviews of them. However, based on the fact that Dell charges £80 to upgrade to the TL56 then I think we can assume that the TK53 is a fair bit slower than the TL56.

If you look up the notebookcheck site referred to in MikeT's helpful blog, the TL56 is pretty much on a par with the old Intel Dual Core processors built on the Yonah technology.

I know I have made a few assumptions here, but all this leads me to conclude that the 6400 using the Intel T2130 will be faster than the Vostro 1000 running the AMD TK53. Whether anybody will be able to tell the difference in real life is debatable, of course.

On amore subjective note, I also prefer the look of the silver Inspirons over the black Vostros.

There is a lead time of 3 weeks on this laptop if you want Truelife screen.

Thats not technically true - dell's upgrade prices are way over the top, just look at their RAM prices. Slower yes, but not £80 in difference better ;-)

These are not based on the netburst architecture. They are based on the core architecture. They just have a smaller cache and slower fsb.

so thats 12days from order to your hands? well i might be able to put up with that.
