I really rate these as very portable and good all round performers. Dell knocked a chunk off the price today making it its cheapest ever price for theis ecode.

Thats the only problem with this laptop it is Intel GMA 950 onboard graphics with upto 128MB shared memory.

If only you could spec in a GeForce Go or something for a bit extra £££

I note the free Vista upgrade box is not ticked automatically when ordering, so make you you tick this box ! (i.e for a free Vista Premium upgrade, except for the £11 delivery)

Its actually up to 224megs of shared system memory, I have one here that I am using now and it does a good job of Far cry with quite a bit of eye candy on, It would of course have been nice to be offered a graphics upgrade path on this model but it would intrude into Dells other models so they dont offer it.
Still a great machine for size and ability at this price.

Great little laptop and the upgrades are worth taking up too :santa: Thanks Mike :santa:

If you really want a graphics card Dell have a good spec 6400 with a 128mb ATI X1300 graphics card (upgradeable) going for £639. E value code is 1-N01646A.

Yes, just posting that one now ;-)

You can get a Toshiba Satellite from Comet (google.co.uk/url…srw) for £549.
The link isn't working right now but it was yesterday; I bought one of these on GumTree a few days ago for £440, very impressed with it aswell.
Only downside compared to this machine is Core Duo instead of Core Duo 2, which supposedly makes about a 25% difference to speed, except this is clocked about 200MHz faster I think so that probably (more than) cancels that out, also mine has a TruBrite screen (which is deffinetely worth getting by the way) I'm not sure whether the Comet one has (because their site won't load for me properly at the moment, even if I try and browse around it from the homepage, maybe they're doing maintenance or something).

Hope that helps

I always say the following when this laptop is on offer: -

The 9cell battery is a great upgrade (especially for that price) but it does stick out the back about an inch, whereas the 6cell battery doesn't.

The truelife screen update is worth investigating on the net (e.g. reviews & forums) as it's not necessarily better, it's just different and some people (i.e. ME) prefer the original matt screen.

It's a fantastic laptop - I bought one in August, and it's the most portable laptop I've ever seen. It's light and battery life is fantastic (I am able to get the 9 cell battery to last around 6 hours at times, although this depends on usage).

Hi,
The Comet site still isn't working right so I can't see the Toshiba laptop that you're referring to. But what is the address for 'GumTree'. At £440 is the machine second hand or a refurb?
Thanks.

The Gumtree seller only had one; it was just an unwanted XMas present. The Comet one's still a very good deal though.

Anyone any idea that the Vista upgrade pack that is sent through in February.
Would this be to upgrade ANY One XP system? Ie not the laptop but a desktop instead??

Edit.
Just read the FAQ

What is included with the Express Upgrade to Windows Vista upgrade … What is included with the Express Upgrade to Windows Vista upgrade package?1. Microsoft operating system upgrade DVD 2. Dell Upgrade DVD – includes the Dell Upgrade Assistant (tool that walks the customer through the process), BIOS, drivers, and application patches (if available). 3. New Windows Vista license or Certificate of Authenticity (COA) 4. Dell produced tech sheet/upgrade instructions

That to me says it doesnt need to be used with the machine sold. It will just upgrade an XP operating system one time only.
If this is the case im looking at upgrading my current desktop upgrade pack is going to be around £100 so this system is looking more attractive by the minute

Thanks Mike.

We're looking to buy a laptop for home use, and are very interested in this particular deal you've posted.

I was wondering if you could give further advice on the general purchase of Dell laptops - in particular relating to the other upgrade options Dell offers such as Security software, microsoft software, wireless routers. What's worth purchasing?

Thanks!

jir66 welcome to the forums:thumbsup:

Purchase nothing from Dell that you can get cheaper elseware, that includes all that you mentioned. Dell make the big profits on the add ons customers buy.
AVG and Avast both do free antivirus software which updates to the latest difinitions daily, Microsoft do Windows Defender which is also free antispyware.

Let me know if there is any other help you need before purchasing and I will help if I can.
