Flipping good value ! If I never had a Macbook I would go for this !

Is the i5 version with 750GB and £100 off making it £548 good value also?

I think the i5 version doesn't have a full HD screen?

What battery life would you get on this? In terms of hours

Ahh yeah, youre right - cheers, I need to look more closely at specs.

Read some reviews, I think I saw a quote for about 6 hours (364 minutes seems to pop into my memory) with medium brightness and wifi on.

And then half that for intense gaming, and double it for low brightness/no wifi!!

Edit: The 'read some reviews' means I read some, as in past tense. I'm not telling you to go read some! I can see how that could be misconstrued as rude!!.

While I can see some advantage of "U" cpu's for battery life, you only get half the speed of a 35W cpu in the same class. Only you can decide if this is enough for you, it wouldn't be for me. Most new Dell's laptop now have the low voltage cpu's, which is a shame.

If I was in the market for a fast laptop, I would get this one hands down! Really nice spec for just under £700

excellent price for a core i7 machine

Despite the fact that I posted this, this is my concern. I want to upgrade my Vostro 3750 with an i7-2630qm processor but I think that might actually be faster! I would prefer the option of a 4700mq or so.

Not voting either way, but this is no lightweight. More of a desktop replacement machine.

"Starting weight of 5.7 lb (2.6 Kg) with optional touch display "

Macbook Pro wannabe. Good value though.

Hmm, OK so opinions on this deal or THIS MSI laptop? It's not being used for gaming but it's for the wife and I want something that will last her a while. I'm thinking this Dell is even with a slightly slower processor and less RAM.

A decent laptop let down by a poor screen. I'm surprised there are so few IPS screen laptops on the market.

Unbelievable price. If I hadn't purchased the deal for the older one I'd have been all over this

Hot from me, just wish it had a hybrid drive for a touch more responsiveness.

You can get 8% off if you're a student yourself or have some good mates :according to vouchercodes.co.uk

Nice.

Paid the same price for an MSI i7-4702MQ powered laptop a few months back. Besides the CPU, the rest of the spec is about the same. Suspect this is probably a better made machine but the MQ version of the CPU is almost double the benchmark score of this one.

Still a nice laptop though.

Ordered one of these the other day, but way off being shipped. Asked Dell to apply the discount rather than me having to reorder.

MSI is good exception if screen resolution; I found it hard how these medium range laptop still not offer FULL HD.

No DVD drive either which I always thought was one of the ways to remove weight, yet it's still half a kilo more than the comparable MacBook Pro.

Seems a good spec though.

And did they? They told me no repricing. I have to cancel and re-order.

Not sure if this one has a free mSATA slot?

You could just shove an mSATA SSD in there as a boot drive and leave the sluggy HDD in place for storage. The MSI I bought suffers from the same problem. Beast of a machine let down by a tardy HDD. Wasn't for me though so I've not concerned myself with checking out mSATA options on it ...

I got the full HD one. (there are lower res version as well)

This one: saveonlaptops.co.uk/MSI…tml

As you can see, spec is almost identical to this one, except for the much higher power CPU.

The graphics card is worse on the MSI. Nvidia GeForce GT 740M vs a GT 750M.

The GT750 in the Dell is a big leap ahead of the GT740 in the MSI, the ram is DDR5 and 128 bit, the GT740 is DDR3 in the MSI and only 64 bit if I'm correct, makes a huge difference in games.

No optical drive. Spec looks good though.

referral link?

Are deals on laptops with a similar spec likely to be any cheaper come end of year/january sales? This is very tempting but I won't need a laptop for a couple more months

Interesting.... £594 for me via my employer

In before fishmaster starts bangin on about touchscreens and Win 8 again.

Ordered one of these in October. Excellent laptop with a mushy keyboard. The 1080p screen is IPS, I would avoid the lower resolutions though.

is there room for an ssd in this?

Any idea how you get the 8% off for students. NUS not showing Dell.

I was wondering this too...

I work for Man Uni and you have to go via a company called Perkz and then register with Dell so you do need to have a Uni address.
Dell have plugged the loophole whereby anyone could buy via the EPP scheme. I get 15% off this laptop with this method and there's also a bit of a glitch because the original price has dropped. The 10% off that Dell promise via the VIP site does not work because customers are sent individual codes for selective laptops/PCs

a macbook pro with non integrated graphics is over £2000....

Seems unfair to compare to something that costs 3 times as much.

I really don't like the idea of windows 8 at all but we get no choice anymoreI have the XPS L702x which is really heavy but I only keep it on my desk anyway but will this inspiron 15 be as heavy as my xps because this one would be for moving about. I also really wanted a disc drive but that would mean me buying the 17inch version so that would be probably too big and bulky to move about do you think? Are there not likely to be any discount vouchers for this?

Upgrading to 8.1 is easy, although you have to update 8 with the normal updates before the 8.1 upgrade appears in the apps store.
