Dell have some really good deals from their outlet store with the studio 17 laptops recently.

for example:

* Certified refurbished
* Studio 1747
* Intel Core i7 720QM 1.6GHz (2.8 GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)
* English Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium (64 BIT)
* English Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium (64 BIT)
* Hard Drive : 500GB Serial ATA (7200RPM)
* 6144MB (1x4096 + 1x2048) 1333MHz DDR3 Dual Channel
* 17.3in Full High Definition (1920X1080) LED with TrueLife
* Graphics 1 GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650

+ £20 off voucher: V6LG8?BF$ZFK3T (expires midnight 04/08/10)

Total of £726.09 + delviery (about £20) The same spec laptop from dell.co.uk goes for well over £1300 and these all carry the same full 12 month warranty as new ones.

There are ones which are cheaper ones as well, obviously with less ram or only 1600x900 screen etc.

I got one couple of weeks ago:
studio 1747, core i7 720QM, 6GB DDR3 1333 Mhz ram, 500GB HDD, 1600x900 screen,
it also had the dell mini PCIe N wifi card, bluetooth, 9 cell battery and the midnight blue satin finish, for a total of £630 (They had free shipping offer couple weeks ago)
The same laptop on dell.co.uk now but with a lower spec core i7 620QM is £1300!! over 50% cheaper and laptop is in absolutly as new condition.

If you don't see one you like, just check back every day or so, they've been pretty regularly uploading with more studio 1747 laptops every day or two for the past two weeks.

If you have one of these and it came with a 90W power adapter then it's worth asking Dell
to replace it with a 130W one.
I emailed them and they sent me one and let me keep (or throw away!) the 90W it came with.

Quite a beast for the price!! HOT!! Dell certainly have impressed me with their laptops lately. My personal one is 5 years old and is in great condition!

It's still there - I guess someone had it in their basket for a while...

This does seem a decent price for the spec - ideal for someone who'll use the four cores and memory (say for video editing). HOT.

Heat added. Good spec for a good price.

im going to get one end of the year... have had my current dell for 4 years and still fast as ever... got a sweet core2duo 2.0ghz t7200 processor in my laptop... will definitely upgrade to quadcore i7. i want 17" multitouch 1080p screen and backlit keyboard and ssd hd for 800 lol and no less than the 5650 graphics

mouthwatering specs, cannot justify it tho lol

check e-bay user thechef01 who sells refurb dell laptops aswell... used him before for a friend and got a good deal

I can't find it on there anymore... must have sold :-(

what an awesome spec though!

His prices seem a little higher than Outlet, although he seems to offer good warranty support packages with his machines. I recently picked up a Dell Studio 15 on there with i7 and lot of upgrades for £524.

I've got a Dell with T7100 in it, also about 4 years old and its about dead now. There's a couple of decent ones on there for around £450...

niceee... yeh u can get good 3 year warranty with that guy which normally costs alot.. what spec did u get?!? and thats direct dell outlet?

Frankly having one myself, I would advice anyone against buying an i7 CPU unless they actually need to run software that is sure to utilise them all. If gaming is the most taxing thing that will be done on the laptop then I would recommend i5, as that will not only cost a lot cheaper (there are some really good i5/ATI5650 Studio 17 models on there for around £500), but run cooler and also be easier on the battery.

Yeah got it direct from Dell Outlet, arrived a few days earlier than the promised 10 day estimate. It was a "certified refurbished" model, however, came packaged as any Dell; all the accessories, backup discs for Win7/Works/drivers (which some manufacturers don't even bother giving you) and you'd be hard pressed to find any cosmetic marks on it. There is the finest mark (not even scratch) on the fold of the lid, but this being satin design, you can't even catch it with a camera and only see it unless you stare at it up close like a compulsive disorder sufferer. The specs were i7 720QM, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 320GB (7200rpm), Red Satin Finish (which I actually like), Win 7 Professional upgrade, 1080p screen upgrade and 9 Cell battery upgrade. Only downside is the ATI 4570 GPU, however, it can handle Source stuff like TF2 pretty well so guess it'll have to do, I'm only going to be using the laptop while I'm studying abroad and when I get back I can just build myself another PC. I specced that model a few days ago and it came down to well over 900 (before vouchers) so at what I got it, I'm pretty chuffed.

I have been tempted to get the i5/ATI5650 combo with Studio 17 as that will be a much better gaming machine and I don't have any serious need for i7 cores on this, however, the 15" model is just about truly portable to carry around the campus so an even bigger model just wouldn't be practical.

I have to agree, its not necessary have to get the core i7 unless you really need it, core i5 will be plenty. Just bear in mind the core i3 already slightly out performs the mid-high rnage core2duos.

I'm going to be using mine for multiple vm machines so thoguht i'ld go with the i7 and 6gb ram, for that price i just really could not resist!

You just need to contact Dell's UK support people via dell.com and tell them your adapter gets
very hot when you play games/edit video.

Also read the thread I linked to.
They may ask you what version of BIOS you're using. The thread has links to etc..
If you're not happy doing that then Dell may do it for you (but I'm not sure about that)

I got one of these last time for £700 including postage with a BD drive.

Don't think about it. Just order one. They are fabulous and run like a dream.

I’ve expired this as it’s a one off. The Outlet does have large volumes of certain systems at times but not in this case. E.g. They had loads of Studio 1749 with i5, HD 5650 for under £500 ten days ago and that was more of a worthwhile deal to post.

Good price but you don’t see many at this price with a FHD screen.

got this model in May, my one came with touchscreen as well for £669 delivered, BRILLIANT,just keep watching the site

anther "very happy" here from a few months ago...

They really are a great piece of kit... and the combo with win 7 is fantasticly fast for normal light user web stuff too, opening the lid to entering info, searching /typing or whatever is unbelievable....

I didn't NEED the i7... but hey it flies for anything I do , dont stress... just buy

Yeah they have several of this model but with only 4gb of ram like this one for:
Price Incl. VAT and excl. delivery... £679.70:

Studio 1747
Intel Core i7 720QM 1.6GHz (2.8 GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)
Operating System English Genuine Windows 7 Ultimate (64 BIT)
MOD,SW,COA,W7U32/64
Hard Drive : 500GB Serial ATA (7200RPM) [QTY : 2]
4096MB (2x2048) 1333MHz DDR3 Dual Channel
17.3in High Definition+ (1600X900) LED with TrueLife

Suppose it does come with Windows 7 ultimate, must be worth a bit

Must agree with this - I've not managed to make my i5-540 break a sweat yet; even converting a video filer there's usually two threads parked and not even stressing the two useabler threads...

Disagree with the above comments, if you can pick up an i7 720 quad core for only a little more than an i5 dual core do it! There are more and more programs being released with quad core support eg, photo shop, corel video studio, winrar 3.7 and many more to come, also the i7 only uses the extra cores as required and has a 6mb cache. always try to get as much bang for your buck as possible.

For laptops I generally take a more balanced view and look at battery life, heat and noise levels as well.
I’d personally much rather a 32nm i5 with integrated graphics only than a 45nm i7 quad with discrete graphics.

I got this 6 months ago with the i5 540 specifically with battery consumption in mind, and the RGBLED screen for the hell of it.

Have to say I've been pretty disappointed with it. It's quick, that's not the problem. The battery life is absolutely diabolical. It won't survive not being plugged in overnight in standby/hibernate - i.e. if i leave it in my bag. Windows 7 goes into meltdown trying to save everything to disk I guess. Pulling it out of standby is then an exercise in futility. Powering up - ditto. Generally have to pull the battery and power in order to kill it and start again. Happened this AM and it nearly went out the window tbh. For £1100 I'm a bit miffed.

Yes, I'm sure I could shut it down fully if I had the inclination, but I work from the office and home about 16 hours a day, so it's not much to ask to keep session state in standby for the other 8 hrs...

sorry i meant the 130 w adaptor

I just tried to email their support, but the system is fundamentally broken and doesn't work (in FF or IE). I wonder if their support is quiet today. Cretins.

Thanks for this. I bought a i7 Studio 17 off Dell for £569 a few weeks ago and its awesome, but the adaptor gets so hot you can't hold it! It says 90W on it so I'll request a new one.

You may have the same problem I had.
I used to leave mine in standby or hibernate - but plugged in with the display open - and I
noticed it would power itself on at about 3am!
Turned out to be a setting in Windows 7.
Go to Control Panel/ cange View by: to Small icons.
Click Power Options, then Change plan settings, then Change advanced power settings
Look for Sleep/Allow wake timers and check if they're disabled for both On battery and Plugged in

If you had your laptop lid closed I think that should stop it powering up anyway.
However, my 1747 will last for ages in Standby (although it will then go to Hibernate)
And Hibernate should last for days, if not weeks.

Hope this helps.
P.S. I had no probs contacting Dell via the web site and I'm using Firefox.
Maybe it's a temporary glitch?

@pjlhot

Thanks for comments. I'd already changed the default Win 7 settings a bit, as they're idiotic (I mean, seriously, who wants it to try and do anything when you close the lid and thus can't see if it's done it...?!). But i've now disabled all the wake stuff, whatever the hell that is, so maybe that will help.

I'm almost rather it just switched itself off than tried to d**k about. at least i'd be able to turn on again without rigmorale...!

Mine's actually an XPS 16, rather than the 1747 studio 17, so not sure if i'm due a new PSU anyway. Will try their lame-o website again! Cheers

Ref stupid dell support web site... Aha. When it tries to use the 'dell system profiler' to interrogate your system, it fails dismally if you say yes. Saying no to bypass this, and it works fine. Genius!

Just got my 130W power adapter today! Called yesterday saying my 90W gets really hot and they said they would send me a new one right away, and they did!

did you guys get certified refurbished or scratch and dent? i heard scratch and dent is misleading as it makes you think it is fairly new but just got damaged whereas i have been told it is just a heavily used laptop with more extensive usage damage

I got certified refurb, after havign a look on forums most people sya that scratch and dent are usually very minor marks.

The site is working again and there are still some good Studio 16 deals.
