If only there was a 13" model amongst the bargains ....

I'm steering clear - had a Dell for <2 years and the screen keeps clicking on and off. Pretty poor build quality.

Have a dell laptop for over three years, still a good workhorse. I prefer it to my sony vaio of a year

There are no bargains there. They may be reduced from original price but they are ALL Refurbs and the prices listed exclude VAT.

Decent prices for spec but certainly no bargains there.

At its peak we had about 3-4 thousand Dell laptops at work....Not a problem with anyone apart from the odd hard drive.

Can't say the same for Lenovo or HP.

.....They still come with one year warranty and I have bought 4 or 5 for various people from there and never had a problem, they are brand new i reckon and just class them up as refurbs.

Didn't the OP state from £356 delivered? Add it to the basket to see the with VAT price.

£356 for an i5 delivered is smoking hot.

Sorry, I had mis-read the post. I read it as £367 excl VAT. So was expecting another £70 on top of that.

Yeah that is a pretty good price.

To the person who said 'no bargains'. I got this yesterday:

Dell L501x (XPS 15)
Core i5-560M 2.66Ghz processor (second fastest dual-core available)
4GB DDR3 SDRAM
500GB 7200rpm hard disk
DVD-RW drive
15.6" B+RGLED 1080p LED-backlit display (this is the £200 upgrade option)
1GB nVidia Optimus switching GT 420M graphics
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

All for £494 inc. VAT and delivery. I actually ordered two as the price was so good. I was thinking about posting about the Dell Outlet as the OP did but the problem is always only one of each item. I still gave heat as it's a worthwhile post.

As for the certified refurbs, they can also be cancelled orders (not always) and as I've actually had better luck from Dell Outlet than the main Dell site, I know where I'd rather order from.

do you get a restore cd along with it

johnct

do you get a restore cd along with it

Don't think you do - can't remember now though....More likely a recovery partition.

I think you get the Windows 7 CD so you'll be fine.

what the graphic cards in theses?

The XPS 15 I ordered says 'no media' but that's what Dell DataSafe Local Backup is for and the DVD-RW drive. I honestly don't mind spending an hour burning my own recovery discs. Dell do put the recovery partitions on the drives even the ones at the Factory Outlet.

carloskev

For this price it will be integrated.

If you have the Windows 7 DVD then you wouldn't need to as Dell don't ship with anything special on the hard drives....You will get Sonic or Roxio and thats about it.

this will tell you about the i5 chip in the dell
as jrw says it will be intergrated i am tempted to get one

Not necessarily! While I agree it's a long shot and you shouldn't count on a dedicated graphics chip being included, sometimes Dell don't list the full spec of the laptop on the outlet site. It can be a nice bonus if one is present but isn't listed as it was on my 15r

carloskev

what the graphic cards in theses?

Most of them are integrated, they show any dedicated GPUs in the 'available options' area. Also at this having attention drawn to it, more competition taking away the laptops I want before I see them =P

There is currently an i3 studio with a 4570 for £420 inc VAT, but it has a purple lid else I'd have been tempted.

Dell Outlet deals are often nice, if only the site were not always down (hopefully it is working today). Besides I find the uncomplete description of the product specs a little bit confusing. For example, say I choose an XPS 15 or 17 which is normally sold with a dedicated graphic card, there's no way to find out which is featured for each model (GT 420/435/445M ?) apart if it has been refurbished (for instance if you choose a Studio 1558, you can notice it is indeed equiped with a refurbished HD 5470 1GB).

I've had an xps7100 turn up with a 5850 instead of a 5670 and an xps 1530 with an 8600gt instead of intergrated. They list the minimum spec you will receive; they often turn up with better specs.

The listings will also normally say if it's a cancelled order, refurb or damaged/cosmetic issues. The vast majority are cancelled orders.

That sounds like a great price! I suspect the Core i7 machine probably comes with an AMD graphics adapter too - it would be very unusual (even as a refurb) for someone to spec a quad-core without decent graphics and I know with Dell's higher-end offerings the rest of the spec is normally up there too.

I went the XPS 15 route as I wanted the better case build-quality and that 1080p high-contrast LCD though the Inspiron 15R (N5010) is known to be a much better machine than the base Inspiron 15.

Nightmare with dell outlet, Cancelling is almost impossible and they refunded over £100 less than they took from my card. In the end gave up and got my card to refund it

Yes, I've seen a number of machines have no data on the CPU and it arrives and is something powerful (when they could just have easily put the most basic one in and still be within rights). The M1530 can't have integrated graphics so it would only be an 8400M GS or 8600M GT.

For the people who are looking at 'scratch/dent' models, I ordered one of those before and it had a very feint 1 inch scratch on the machine's underside, they are rarely that bad.

Also, the sound is awesome on the XPS15. You really don't need external speakers if you're watching movies on this lappy!

I'm guessing these all come with HDMI?

The XPS laptops usually have either Windows 7 premium (64 BIT) or Windows 7 Ultimate (32 BIT) listed as the OS. Surely they mean 64 bit for ultimate, or is it one-size-fits-all?

yeah i will be chuffed to bits if I get it, been watching the field since xmas waiting to pounce and now I have, it says the case is aluminium so hopefully great build quality also

To your statement about the XPS 15 and 17 laptops (having owned a number and spent ages choosing a spec) - I can assure you this is true:

XPS 15 with Intel Core i3 or i5 = 1GB GT 420M
XPS 15 with Intel Core i7 (quad) = 2GB GT 435M
XPS 17 with Intel Core i3 or i5 = 1GB GT 435M
XPS 17 with Intel Core i7 (quad) = 3GB GT 445M

Those are the only specs available. Also, if you have a Core i7 you don't get Optimus support. Also, should add that the 420M, 425M and 435M are all the same silicon (GF108 core) so there are reports of a simple overclock on the 420M @ 500Mhz up to 435M speeds @ 650Mhz and beyond with no issues - the XPS 15 casing is capable of exhausting heat from a quad-core and 435M anyway as that is an available option.

I work for dell. All the systems on the outlet are usually brand new. They need to be classed as refurb as they have been rejected by the buyer (normally due to being incorrect spec ordered or shipped to wrong address) so dell cannot sell them as 'new' even if they have been unopened

Good find, despite being refurb XPS's are still worth it, especially with a year's guarantee..

As ever, only bargains for the first five people - everything worth having has long gone, cheapest i5 now 400 + VAT

I have one of the i7 XPS15's from the original deal on here a while ago. Mine came with a 2GB GeForce GT 435M if that helps any. Would be surprised if they only came with integrated graphics.

Great machine, love it - not one for travelling around with as big bulky/heavy, but perfect as desktop replacement.
