Would make a tidy media server. Grab yourself a bit of bargain ram from elsewhere and you're sorted.

what are you talking about you brainiac:!!!!!!
the link didnt work and there was a server with near enough the same spec but if you had looked you would know that brainiac!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is pretty good - much better than the SC440 deal posted the other week.

I have an SC440 here as my development server, and it's a brilliant little box. Very quiet, very cool.

However, if I were to buy a replacement now it'd have to be the HP ML110 G5. This has a Xeon 3065 (2.33Ghz), 1GB RAM 800Mhz DDR2, 250GB disk, DVDRW, and also has four disk drive slots rather than just 2 in the Dell. It's available from ebuyer for £219.99 delivered (ebuyer.com/pro…153). There's also a promo from HP for double memory for free - h40059.www4.hp.com/pro…tml

The older ML110 G4 is also available for around £175 - but the G5 is worth the extra £50 in my opinion.

Hope this helps someone!

Sam

Hey presto.... what sort of web magic is this I said - up popped the server in question for the price I was expecting. Well I thought, what a bargain. So I got my switch card out and bought 2 of the cheeky little monkeys.http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=uk&l=en&cs=ukdhs1&kc=&oc=PE1T1052

Mate you should have used quidco as well. I think you get 5% cashback

Manual support.euro.dell.com/sup…htm

It lets me buy it with an option of hdds connected to add-in card but without purchasing the card itself – go for that you may get a card for free (after complaining a lot).

Oh, and do not forget to add a very usable floppy (you cannot get it from anywhere else but Dell – it is black apparently) for a mere £48.18

Don't worry, I snapped the quidco up.

I was speccing up a basic server the other day, and didnt do as well as this - and I was cheating by using a consumer grade motherboard and an AM2 Opteron.

Simply put, the cheapest opterons are around the £50 mark, and thats for the AM2 versions (and these *may* be socket F) a decent consumer grade motherboard would be £40 (and these have CK8-4 based bords which is a "proper" server chipset), another £30 for the ECC RAM, £60 for the hard drives and £20 for even a crummy case and you're well over what dell are asking for these.... making them a screaming bargain.

The price for a ram upgrade to a gig seem fair (and would be recommended), and perhaps at a push the HDD upgrade prices too.

XP is different to WHS. Apples and Oranges.

Absolute bargain. Well found.

Tempting especially as I am playing with Ubuntu Linux at present. I am very impreesed with both the usability and the price (free). I have been playing Beneath a steel sky and am on Flight of the Amazon Queen which both come ready for downloading with it.

OK a bit of a download at almost 700MB from ubuntu.com/ but very good, in my opinion. I see the US end of Dell is actually offering machines with Ubuntu preinstalled.

nice one! just ordered it so will give some feedback if/when it arrives.

Planning to use it as a fileserver loaded with ubuntu running firefly media server for music...

They have very noisy fans in them to keep them cool, so expect this.

Great deal - added an upgraded one to an existing company order for myself, so no vat or shipping applicable - £380.00 all in. Its to replace a Netgear SC101, unreliable & slow.

Upgraded to:

1gb 667mhz single dimm (I've a spare stick available to make 2gb).
750gb hd x 2
SAS 6iR Internal Raid Card (Raid 1)
3 yr NBD Warranty
Oh, and a free mouse!

Its going in the attic, as a file server (music, photo's, personal files). It'll be accessed a bedroom pc, laptop & PS3. (Any recommendations for PS3 media server software?).

Unsure if its much of a bargain with all my upgrades, but I'm happy at what I'm getting.

Comments welcome

Regards

I can confirm that the Poweredge T105 is almost silent when running. The fans only sound louder upon boot up.

Just waiting for Microsoft Home Server to arrive now....
