Yep, I agree.Great price for such high spec.

it does not cost £199 delivered , many people have no idea what i7 is, so they will keep voting cold as it for sure has to be a worse value than their nc10 or wind from Argos

LOL - agreed, but let's educate

Will be ordering the i7 820 in a studio tonight with 6gb ram and BR, price goes up quite a bit but it will be worth it.

but it will be worth it.

Depends on what you are going to use it for

95% of people buy the fastest they can afford, then use it at 50% of capacity :-D

I buy the fastest so it last me more than a year before I need to upgrade again.

Do you work for Hewlett Packard?? did you win the lottery???

£410 to upgrade form a 2.8ghz to a 3.06ghz processor and £430 for an extra 2gb Ram?? Are you mad??

Thats £840 in upgrades, and what benefit will you get?? hardly any...

820 is quite a bit faster, I will be ordering the 17 which comes with that standard and a 1tb HDD, 9 cell battery, 1gb Video card, for far less than the 15 at the same spec.

Techreport gives details of how Turbo Boost works on this 1.6GHz CPU:

‘Of course, these base values are just the tip of the iceberg. Thanks to Turbo Boost, Clarksfield CPUs can dynamically range above their base clock speeds when adequate thermal headroom is available. Turbo Boost is most aggressive when only one or two cores are occupied, but it'll also push the issue a little if all cores are engaged, thermals permitting.’

thanks for the explanation

820qm is less than 10% faster than 720qm
Whether that is worth £410 more depends on your needs!

If you will be using it for extremely high end graphics/Cad then ok, although i think the GPU will be your bottleneck. You are better off going for an Nvidia GX260m or even GX280m for Gaming or one of the dedicated CAD cards for Autocads. The 820QM is a waste of £410 in my opinion - just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the input, its all welcome, I will be buying tonight so fire away people, have up to £1000 to replace my dead macbook pro. Have a PS3 so use that for gaming just need something that will last me a couple years without showing its age to much.

Mostly run design packages.

What do you guys think of the XPS16 for £1079? The studio seems such better value?

True - Studio sounds better value, but watch out for two things the XPS 16 offers you
1- A much better GPU.
2-The RGBLED screen - the best in the industry.

So if your priority is Multimedia / Gaming or Photo editing - The XPS will provide a better experience

Been trying to make a decision betwene the two for the last couple of weeks. Might be worth looking at some threads at the notebookreview forums. People have only just started receiveing the studio xps 16 with i7 in the last couple of days. So keep an eye out for threads on 'studio xps 1645':

Yes, however the RGBLED is optional so add another 190 to 1079 = 1269, so the studio seems even cheaper considering that the XPS comes standard with WLED.

The cheapest studio xps 16 with i7 and rgb screen is £1199 before the 5% discount and any epp discounts at the moment:

Tbh, for that Id go for the 17 at 1249, excellent spec for the money, to get the 15" to an even lower spec (cant change vid card and HDD) is almost 1600!

XPS seems a lot more money for very little extra.

The screens are bad in the studio 15's. I haev had 2 dodgy/ grainy flickering screens, ask dell to upgrade to a decent 1080p panel for the money they are asking for this laptop.

Dunno I read that people that got them replaced with a different screen had eliminated the problem. Some of those screens happened to be 1080p ones but I think even some 1080's suffered from another flickering problem(according to the posts I read on dell and notebook forum when I was looking to see how widespread pulsing/flickering screen was on m 2 studio's I bought)and a little different to the flickering found on the 1366x768 panels. I just know you need to research a bit to find out.. You would assume dell would be using decent components (I did until I bought 2 laptops to find out their QC department are blind)

With BR player and screen upgrade its 787 with quidco its 755. Pretty good.

Problem is at this pricepoint theres hardly any i7 laptops, pretty much only the HP envy which is absolutely stunning, had a look at the weekend. Im used to Mac quality finish and the Envy is fantastic, makes the Dell look really cheap and tacky.

Bought my 2 from CPW they took back the 1st one OK unfortunately the replacement also did it but the lad I bought it for was happy enough even though I wanted to take it back again.

Well i decided it was time for something decent, i was sick of £300 PC's lasting a year :P

Typing on one of these now, got it a week ago for £630 delivered, excellent bit of kit for the money!

Went for the i7 so as not to downgrade my processing power from my old desktop E8400, and it feels every bit as nippy as that machine did, perfect so far.
