£650 seems pretty good given the i7, 6gb ram, Full HD screen and Blu-ray. Only let-down in that is the graphics card (perfectly capable but only a class 3 on the notebookcheck list).

I bought an XPS16 earlier this year from Dell outlet (I was a little worried that an i7 would run too hot and compromised with an i5-540, 320gb HDD, 4Gb ram for £575). It arrived in pristine condition, also the blu-ray turned out to be a writer and not just a BD-ROM. I did worry the 15.6" 1920x1080 screen would be 'too small' but it's amazingly sharp and clear. Hope you're as lucky and happy.

I would look at the large amount of posts on the Dell forum regarding the Dell 1557 and 1558s with regard to overheating and windows freeze issues, before considering one of these units.

One of the many long threads starts here http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/p/19303691/19586387.aspx#19586387

I had to return my Studio 1558 from the outlet site as it suffered from the random Windows freeze fault. Updated all the drivers and the system Bios to latest and it was still unusable. It would be good to hear your experience with the unit - I hope it all works OK.

Here's the HD5470 review at notebookcheck.

I looked on Autodesk for compatibility on the HD-5470 but it seems Autocad haven't tested it or the HD-5400 series. Although I don't imagine there'll be a problem it might be best to ask on the autocad forums or similar....

The problems do seem quite off-putting - all the Dell over-heating fan-speed issues were one of the reasons I decided not to stretch my budget to an i7 processor on my XPS 16 - that said it seems to be the HD-4670 graphics that leave my legs toasty - why Dell don't allow you to switch the on chip graphics for browsing / movie playback I don't know...

I heard i7 chips in laptop make a lot of heat. Is it true?

I had loads of issues with my 17" Studio laptop, freezing all the time and overheating, the fan noise was the biggest issue with it compared to my old Vostro 1500 which you never heard . Even with the latest Bios upgrade the fan issues were not resolved so i sent it back , just waiting to see if then new lot of Studio Laptops have this issue or not or might go for the Vostro 1720 instead.

Its annoying on the Dell Outlet site that some laptops do not show a processor - so would you just be taking a punt on a decent one turning up? Theres a Dell XPS16 on there now for example...

It's definitely not worth taking a punt.

I bought a laptop 4 weeks ago, when I wasn't sure which processor I was getting. I called up Dell the following day to request the full specs and wasn't happy with the processor. I then requested cancellation, but this was ignored and the laptop was dispatched and I was charged the full amount. I then sent them an email and they stopped the courier delivering to me, yet it took them 3 weeks to get a refund issued to me, as they would not refund until the laptop had arrived back into their warehouse.

I can understand why - good deals on Dell Outlet don't hang around; Dell phone support will not give details on the outlet deals; but once you order the confirmation email has a working phone number...

I too am waiting to see if the Dell model issues are fixed yet as the overheating and freezing seems to affect most of their model range.
I can also confirm that there is no number in order to contact Dell Outlet through on their website, so you don't get the telephone number until you have ordered. I can also confirm that you need to set aside the best part of a month to argue / arrange for product return / and then wait for a recredit.
I have now had two Dell Outlet laptops in a row where I have payed, waited, not received anything or else a laptop that clearly did not work, try to cancel the order / return the laptop and then have to wait a large number of days for Dell to refund my money. Their support centre also seems to have been moved to France, so you get random calls from French speaking staff who are unable to help you. I think they are doing a roaring trade just on the interest on the monies alone! So over two months later still back at square one. Dell won't even offer me a discount if I try a third time lucky on one of their systems.

I'm now thinking of buying my first non-Dell system for over 15 years!

An i7 processor in a laptop sounds a bit iffy to me...

If you want that much power, get a desktop.

Go ahead - take the plunge!

I've always had Dell or HP laptops for work and Acer at home (cheap!). I must admit the Dells seem better built but I've had a number of HDD / motherboard failures on them over the years; whilst the cheaper lappys have had more minor problems like keyboard wearing out and not keeping so pristine looking.

can get this delivered for £630, comes with an awesome GPU and an i5 processor, who needs hyper threading anyway,

outlet.euro.dell.com/top…D16

Nice little deal you have there. Btw, Tesco Direct are offering great deals on Dell laptops - they seem to be cheaper that on the Dell site itself!

i will be getting one in christmas

I've had my 1558 for about 2 months now, never had any problems with heat, freezing, BSoD or anything like that.

When it comes to Graphics Cards I'm a complete air head!
Could anyone show me to a site/guide explaining how good a graphics card is - in comparison to other graphics card's?

Thanks!

from dell to acer... deary me

Do not get a 1557 with an i7 and ati 4570. I got mine repaired 3 times it has now been replaced with the stable yet still hot 1558 i7 with the ati 5470.

I have a 1558 with an i5 430M

UNUSABLE. Temps run between 40-100 deg cel.

DELL are not ready to accept that the system has a fault.

I have had a Dell 1557 with i7 720QM and 4570 for about four months now, and haven't had any problems with it, very quick system that runs perfectly.

Same for me. Got mine new with 6gb ram, i7. It actually runs quite cool I found compared with other laptops I've had. Quiet too.

Not sure why you'd question needing that much power in a laptop, and get a desktop instead. A desktop is completely different type of use. For programming, and run vm's it's a great laptop. The only thing I don't like about it is the size. It's wider than I expected, and a bit thicker than I'd like. The XPS may have been a better choice for me.

Back at the plot - I can't see this on the link. No 1557 or 1558. I tried filtering by processor and it said no results for Core i7.

would'nt touch a dell again. Bought an xps 1530 a couple of years back had 3 hard drive failures in a year which were replaced under warranty and a day after warranty ran out and guess what.....

Can't see anymore. Expired?

that is a really good price. shame they've all gone already!

I've had a 1557 with i7-720QM with 8Gb but lesser graphics card for 6 months and been very happy with it. I did have a hard disk failure but I put that down to a random occurence. It does run hot, but not too much and I have it on my lap a lot at home. I do alternate between on coffee table and lap but that's due to not wanting to spend too much time hunching over. It did take a while to get used to the screen but I'm very happy with it now, glad I went for the full HD and not the less one. If I was still looking to upgrade I'd have ordered this in far less time than it took to write this post!

Try it if you will, but I'd say Dell and new tech do not work well

If you "need" i7, then get this, but if you actualy need i7 I don't think you'd buy this.

Still this is the cheapest i7 Laptop out there.. respect to OP

also cpu benchmarks as well...just a comparison and like car speeds/bhp/0-60s (or 0-62s) never 100% accurate

Presuming the 1557 is the same basic spec as the 1558, there's HDMI out and VGA out.

It doesn't sound like you have anything to complain about.
What's to stop someone buying dozens of laptops from the Dell Outlet, phoning for the specs and then choosing the best one and cancelling the rest for an instant refund?

Had mine 2 weeks, no issues at all - mega laptop (cost £610)
Only thing tho ... the lid type wasnt mentioned so I knew it would be pot luck. Ended up with a designer one which is quite over the top and takes a bit of getting used too .. was quite a surprise when I first saw it ...
