** 10% code works; now a bit cheaper **
Was £808, now £793 (plus 7% Quidco).

Please read before you vote. Admittedly this deal will not be for everyone; this is an expensive laptop but with a huge spec to go with it.

Key features:
* i5-520M
* ATi 5650 dedicated graphics (high-mid range)
* 8GB RAM (2x4GB sticks would cost £300 by themselves).
* 1TB HDD (2x500GB 7200rpm, 1x500GB is about £80).

** To get this price you need to use a 10% code, e.g. HXLLBW9HW9TL2D**

7% Quidco too.

Personally I upgraded to i5-540M for £20 and added a backlit keyboard for £30.

By comparison a similar-spec Acer 5942G is £949 at Play but with 4GB RAM and 640GB 5400rpm HDD.

Details:
Base Intel® Core i5-520M (2.4GHz, 4 Threads, turbo Boost up to 2.93GHz, 3MB cache)
Microsoft Operating System Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English
Memory 8192MB 1066MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [2x4096]
Keyboard Internal UK/Irish Qwerty Keyboard
Video Card 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 Graphics Card
Hard Drive 1TB (7,200rpm) Serial ATA Dual Hard Drive (2x 500GB)
Optical Devices DVD +/- RW Drive (read/write CD & DVD) with DVD Burn software
Wireless Networking Dell Wireless 1397 Mini Card (802.11 b/g)
Primary Battery Primary 6-cell 56 WHr Lithium Ion battery
LCD 17.3 High Definition+ (1600x900) LED with TL

Thanks to kiwikeen for pointing out the 8% code should work without jiggling the spec.

14/4/10 Price dropped by £50. Blu-ray upgrade option is also now £90 which is in line with retail price for a new drive.
15/4/10 Price back up again. Maybe because of Quidco?
15/4/10 10% code works now.

Looks good to me expensive but good spec, i think.

Does anybody know if the twin hdd configuration can be set up as RAID?

Good spec for this price Hot for me

The new Dell Studio 17" laptops all look good mainly because of the ATI 5650 video card. However they do seem to have a problem of running hot (see review)...

I'll wait until I see a price and some proper reviews of the new Acer 7740G (17" plus ATI 5650) before I part with my cash.

Its an impressive spec however at this price its missing a crucial component....................BLU-RAY!

Just found the Acer 7740G advertised at £715 on Acer Direct (see link)...

acerdirect.co.uk/Ace…asp

The equivalent Dell 17" i5-430M 500GB machine costs £729 (before any discounts). I suspect the Acer machine will start to get discounted as soon as volumes become available.

There's no need to mess around with upgrading the CPU to use the 8% off code, as the system was over £999 before Dell discounted it, the code will work as is. Pretty good deal but not even close to this one ]http//ww…h-d

directX 11 ?? and shader model 5.0 - i don't think soooo on 128Bit bus width. it's just a mid range graphic card for laptops (and and very low range on desktop pc). Do not think to play new games on full specs (with AA and AF on max)

in general it's laptop with good specs. practicly what you can do with 8 GB of ram and crap grafic card ??! lol

but i presume it's veeeery good laptop for everyday use. for the price you can't go wrong.

Run several virtual machines.

I'm going to use mine as a portable development box; unless a better deal comes up?

--edit
Looking here the 5650 doesn't look too bad. Yeah, not up to a desktop card but it plays anything they threw at it - including Sims 3 at Ultra detail! *cough* I mean, Crysis at Medium detail.

The acer has less ram and smaller hard drive space. That del studio l has 4650 graphics and 6gb ram but better processor.

An absurd price for this.......

lovely looking laptop, if only i had the cash

Sounds good to start with but no Blu-Ray for that price is a major oversight. Also it's need something like a 30 cell battery!

bloody hell the code dosent work

Yes it does - I think u need to get this unexpired - seems a good deal - I would upgrade CPU for £20 & the backlit keyboard too - makes it £854 before quidco

Hi there, still dosent work for me.

I didn't expire the deal.

p.s is it worth paying 125 extra for the 4yr warranty?

How come I can't edit this now? The 8% code HZT2G1HHM0TDSJ is not expired so this price is still possible.

Grr...

If you cut and paste this it should work. HZT2G1HHM0TDSJ

Going on my own experience with dell laptops £125 is worth the service you can expect from them. I paid £120 to extend my warranty by 2 years do it's a pretty good deal IMHO. When they couldn't fix my xps m1330 they replaced it with a brand new vostro v13 even though my xps was a 2 yr old outlet machine.

To unexpire the deal contact a mod using the report symbol beside the avatar and someone will fix it for you.

is it only me or when i click next it gets stuck and browser doesnt load

warning before you buy from dell they have over 1000's complaint's from angry customer's check out youtube judge for your self's
not votting either way they are cowboys

I've relisted the deal for you til a mod unexpires this thread. I've acknowledged you directly.

No, I have the same problem with all of dells links now too

If you take all everything off the url after the deal code it still works - as do the pages and the code. At least it did for me just now (4am).

URL that worked for me was configure.euro.dell.com/del…912

Shouldn't be expired yet.

Looks good to me. I paid ~£1100 for an XPS16 with similar spec, but with the HDLED screen about 2 months ago.

Re: the question about the warranty: yes, it's worth it! I'd upgrade even further to the accidental damage warranty, too (which is why I'm not getting this deal, as I'd rather keep the total cost with warranties for my next Dell to less than this would come to and I don't need anything with quite these specs anyway). The warranty has saved our bacon a few times and much more than paid for itself, and Dell is always quick, courteous and checks back to see that we are happy with the repairs and the service.

I would imagine that some of the complaints about "awful" Dell service come from people who didn't beef up their warranties -- the service is golden if you do. If you're always careful with your computers and don't have any pets/kids/clumsy people around, I guess the damage warranty might be unneeded, but the regular extended service warranty could still be helpful.

I don't know - 8 GB of memory in a laptop does not seem like a wise choice. So much RAM uses a lot of energy, reducing battery life and making it run hot. Unless you have very specific applications (data mining, scientific computing, huge databases, password guessing) there is not much use in it.

Anyone who buys this for it's battery life is a moron, of course it's going to be pathetic.

Good deal but the lack of blu-ray and wireless N are a big fail for me.

The only way I could get to this laptop (since the Dell site would freeze following the deal link above) was to search the dell website for "N0074912". Since I also couldn't find the Studio 17 model shown above either.

directX 11 ?? and shader model 5.0 - i don't think soooo on 128Bit bus width. it's just a mid range graphic card for laptops (and and very low range on desktop pc). Do not think to play new games on full specs (with AA and AF on max)

Errr - what exactly you are ttying to say here??? The ATI 5650 does use DirectX 11 and Shader Model 5.0 on an 128 bit bus. Fact! And why shouldn't it? The much faster ATI 5850, the fastest laptop video card you can buy today also does this on a 128 bit bus albeit with GDDR5!

Please credit some of the participants of these forums with a bit more sense. Yes we know laptop cards aren't as good as desktop cards but if we wanted to buy a desktop we wouldn't be studying laptops now would we? Oh, and here's another revelation for you....you don't actually have to play a game on the absolute highest resolution & detail settings to enjoy it!

Thanks to Mr Velvet for the post. Please keep them coming...

Just in case anyone else out there is concerned about these new Dell 17" lappies running too hot, I found a review of the Acer 7740G which is very similar to what Dell is offering. It's in Polish so you will have to use your brower to translate it but basically it says that apart from a couple of keys, overheating is not an issue. There are also a few benchmarks to check out.

benchmark.pl/tes…tml

anyone know if you can get a variant of this with WUXGA resolution (1920x1200)?

nice deal OP

I've had a quidco account for years and never really got anything from it, how reliable is the Dell cashback? Am I right in thinking it's 10% back? Would that be ~£80 back?

Finally, is there anything I can do to ensure the transaction is tracked (clear cache/cookies/etc)?

Thanks.

i bought one of these with 4GB ram a few weeks back...

it doesn't run that hot - yes it is warm underneath but you can still use it as a "lap"top.... i don't have the wirring/fan noise some people have complained about and im very happy with it...

ive played napolean total war on it and the laptop copes perfectly fine. it looks great, has nice spec, and a bargain at the £626 i paid

hotukdeals.com/ite…mb-

this will weigh in at 3.2kg plus extra hard drive- so prob 3.4kg
heavy! but not bad for a 17 incher
