Did you buy one then mate? If so is it good? I was a bit worried screen might not be same as if bought from Dell direct?

This model is the same as supplied by Dell. It doesn’t have the 1080P screen which is what the reviews tended to rave about but the 720P screen is still a WLED Edge to Edge Display.

So that include the leather backing and bright 720P screen. IS it fast enough or worth spending a bit more on the i3 Sony for £495
Also how did you perceive there were only 5 left?

I don't have one of these but was considering buying one so did a bit of research.

Add one to the basket and then see how many it lets you increment it by. They limit you to 5 for laptops but if they have less than 5 in stock it won't let you go above how many they have. They often only have small numbers of these refurbs so it's good to know if you need to be quick.

All gone now.
They had a fairly high spec XPS 1340 for weeks but they've all gone as well.

427.00 is a pretty good price given that puts it in line with the Inspiron 1545's which are not as well built as the 1640. I have one with the RGB LED display and it's generally a reasonable machine, my main complaint is the lack of hybrid graphics - the ATI card they've chosen runs pretty hot and reasonably power hungry, most of the time I don't need the graphics performance as I'm just doing 2D work taking advantage of the screen technology. The keyboard backlighting is useful to have and the touchpad is a decent size unlike many of the other Dells.

Hybrid graphics is still fairly rare but hopefully it will become more common. Even some systems that have chips that support hybrid graphics don’t implement it as it costs extra due to the extra board traces etc that are required.

True although the smaller version in the form of the 1340 does have hybrid graphics, the 1640 chassis seems designed for a lower powered GPU.

I was surprised by that and it evens supports Hybrid SLI which never made much sense to me. Its bigger sister has an ATI GPU and they don’t seem to bother much with switchable graphics.

I ordered one and it’s an impressive bit of kit. The screen may not be the RGB LED that is raved about but it’s impressive all the same. Fairly quiet and the main downside is that battery life is only 2 to 2.5 hours which is making me consider selling it.

Got mine, after some poor delivery problems. I am well impressed. Seems very fast for a 2ghz
Keyboard and feel are just like my macbook pro 15.4, similar quality/
Put win 7 though somehow I cold not get 64 bit to boot up. Claen 32 so far fine.
Facial recognition software wont load. apart from that so far so good.

This is a much nicer machine than the inspirons which are similarly priced. Have you guys registed your warrantees?

Yeah, that's why I was saying I wish it had hybrid graphics as I suspect without the ATI card the batterylife would be considerably better. I ended up buying an extended battery for mine which does add a bit of weight but it also lifts the back of the machine to give it some clear air for the fans.

Pete - Where was Windows 7 getting stuck? I've had the Win7 64 bit RC and now the release version and both seem to work fine.

John

I only have a 65W power supply with this system which according to the BIOS is too little; for a system with discrete graphics this seems under powered.
What power supply do others have?

I checked online at my system initially shipped with a 90W power supply from Dell and Dixons are looking into it. I won't hold my breath.
