Was looking to add a bit more memory to my Dell T20 server (which I bought with 1 x 4GB RAM module).
The cost of one 4GB RAM module is from £35 upwards for a new one.
Looked on 'the bay' and found this which is two 4GB RAM modules for £34.95 + £1.99 delivery and this will bring my T20 up to 12GB which should be plenty for me.
However, these are not new but are listed as refurbished.
Don't know how important it is to buy NEW for PC memory but, as there are no moving parts and it's not something that many people replace because of faults, I'm more than willing to take a punt on such an item being refurbished (probably used and removed from upgraded servers).
Basically, this is almost a buy one get one free deal when compared to the cheapest price of a new 4GB module.
RAM is listed as being specifically for T20 server so it's 1600Mhz DDR3 ECC unbuffered 240 pin blah blah.....
Hope this is useful for some of the Dell T20 buyers on here.

More than 20 in stock when I ordered mine yesterday.

server ECC RAM is very cheap on ebay from many sellers, you can even find 16Gb for £35-40

Decent price but depending on your use bear in mind it takes non ECC memory too....not sure of the rices currently but when I got my T20 I sold the 4GB ECC and got 16gb non ECC really cheap

Aye, but if you're thick like me then you'll be searching for listings that specifically state 'Dell T20' to be sure that it is compatible and there are no arguments if it isn't suitable and needs returning.
All the numbers and stuff used to identify the different characteristics of RAM can be confusing to the novice user.
Agreed that many buyers of servers will know all the ins & outs but, saying this, I'm sure that the Dell T20 will have been the first server that many will have bought: thanks to this very site
On this basis, and to the uneducated masses, 'tis the cheapest I could find.

Not unregistered ecc. It's the proper, grown up server ecc that is cheap.

Good luck getting ECC Unbuffered for that price!! You're thinking of buffered/registered stuff that's cheap.

Basically the same £19.99?

Looks like it to me. Hope these discussions help a few T20 users expand their RAM

Mine should arrive any day now. I'll update once received. I've read a few threads about Kingston memory being OK for some and problematic for others but, as with most things, people only tend to comment about the exceptional cases and often the negative: if it's designed for the PC and it doesn't work then it's probably a faulty unit and I suspect that's what happened with the negative stuff I read about Kingston.

Just installed mine. I received 2 x Samsung m391b5273dh0-yk0
The only technical difference I can see between these and the one that came with the T20 is that the Samsung ones are dual rank compared to single rank in the original.
My T20 came with a single 4GB module in slot 2. I expected this to be in slot 1 (memory channel A according to the manual).
Anyway, in accordance with the manual, I put the two dual rank modules in slots 1 & 2 (white tabs) and the original single rank module into slot 3.
PC booted into diagnostics and all checks completed without error. Now I have 12GB RAM and the initial difference I have noticed is a reported increase of write speed between my WD Reds: from ~100mb/s to ~130 mb/s as win 8.1 is clearly using the extra available RAM to buffer the HDD writes. BTW I use my T20 as a desktop really, providing central storage and access to files from phones, TV, laptop etc throughout the house.
Happy with the purchase so far

It's possible the putting that putting the original SIM in slot 3 is slowing your machine down as it maybe breaking 'dual channel' operation for the memory.

I can't see any other option with 2 x 2r8 and 1 x 1r8 of the same capacity (3 x 4GB). Manual says that modules with the same rank number should be used together in order of highest rank number (2r8 being highest using slots with white tabs first (slots 1 & 2). This means the 1r8 (original) goes into slot 3 (first available black tabbed one), unless I've interpreted it incorrectly.
I'm not sure there would be any real-world speed difference in my setup.

Bought and arrived today 16g now, thanks op!

How has the memory been preforming since the install?

Original Poster

Performing great. See post 15 above. Moving 'small' files of under a gigabyte is almost instant as the OS is anticipating what I want to do and caching the data in the extra available memory. HDD then catches up in it's own time (at ~130Mb/s)
