MikeT, not trying to steal your thunder(you do a great job, thanks for the Dell i got the other week!) but can i suggest this £360 Toshiba for those with an aversion to Dell!! Same sort of spec. You can buy the Toshiba from anywhere, its just the BTshop with Quidco i thought was the cheapest

Whilst they are quite similar spec wise, they are not quite aimed at the same people as this Dell has a nice small screen which makes it more portable, you'd be better off comparing the, admittedly well priced Tosh, with a Vostro 1500.

cheers MikeT, I have been after a laptop with 14.1 screen as I need a light lappy, also went for the top screen and the 2mb camera all for £357 plus quidco

I spotted the Vostro 1500 offer this morning, came up after i went to bed, I would have put the Toshiba alternative there.

Delivered price now £313.14 See first post for how to!

Think I'm going to go for one of these since the Vostro 1500 is a bit bulky for my liking, but want to go for the 2.0Ghz C2D, 1440x900 Trulife screen and 9-cell battery.

Does anyone know of any other e-codes which are cheaper to get this spec on a 1400?

You could have the the C2D 2.0Ghz with the upgraded screen, 160GB HDD and a 128mb graphics card for £451

Thanks emasu, but it's adding to my basket at £463. Ah, is it £451 with just the 6-cell battery perhaps?

A strange thing I've noticed building this spec, is that if you change the OS to Windows XP Pro, it gives you a compatability warning for the anti-virus software, despite none being selected! :?

Yeh its £451 with the 6 cell, personally i would for it over this deal as it has a larger HDD and better GFX but each to their own

I noticed that too,but discovered this...when building the laptop, keep the OS as Vista and then when in the basket there's a panel on the left hand side saying 'essential add-ons' with XP pro as one of the options. Just click it and it swaps Vista for XP.

Argh I'm not having much luck here. Decided to go ahead and order this, but going via Quidco to the 'Home' site and using the e-code the discounts aren't showing once added to the basket so the price has shot up to £605, instead of the expected £486 (also added integrated webcam). :?

Is it not possible to get the discounts via the 'Home' site? Or can I do the opposite and go via the 'Business' site and still get the Quidco?

Its a small business site deal, still get quidco though.

Thanks MikeT, just ordering now.

Presumably then I take the link from quidco to the home site, then simply navigate to the business site to order with the discounts and the quidco will still track?

Finally, to complete the order it is forcing me to enter a company name, presumably I can just enter any name I like here?

Thanks again in advance

Yes just navigate without leaving Dell UK, put your own name not a company and enter "home" in the where its being used box. You are a consumer NOT a business customer. (dsr)

Many thanks MikeT, ordered!

Instead of adding the webcam add the 160Gb hard drive, makes it £316.08.

Is it my imagination or does this come without a power supply? They send you only the plug/lead with the english documentation!!!

If you run this through dell home(not business) it says you have to pay £17.63 for the 65w power supply!!

Adding the webcam gives you something to sell once you have received the order, but the choice is yours ;-)
As to the PSU I noticed this before in another deal, I wouldnt worry as its not fit for purpose if they allow you to buy without one so if it were to arrive short just ring them and ask for a free one or you will return the order. One will get sent pretty quick I think.
Just be sure to put your own name when asked for a business name at checkout and select "for Home use" when asked too.

Any idea how when this might finish, hoping this goes for another week to see if i can get a refund on my acer...........

Going through the config process and adding it to basket, it states that the £30 Money Off promo expires 12 March, and the Free Shipping promo expires 26 March.

Ordered mine last Friday. Still showing as in pre-production, but with a delivery estimate of on or by 10 March.

Was sorely tempted to try and cancel it and go for the Vostro 1500 C2D Penryn deal that was posted yesterday (faster CPU & GPU and more memory & hd space for extra £80 over spec I chose), but though the spec is awesome for the money I think I'd find the 1500 just too bulky so resisted..

Just hoping now that I won't need a magnifying glass to be able to read the 14.1" 1440x900 screen!

Well my laptop is due to be delivered today before 1pm, but having done a bit of Googling and found horror story after horror story about the courier service Dell use, Walsh Western, I'm not holding out much hope for the next hour... :-(

Walsh western are the logistics company not the carrier, WW just act as go betweens and hand the delivery to one of many UK carriers.
Be positive, it will arrive today. Enjoy ;-)

Thanks MikeT, but sadly true to many others experience I just rang the local depot of the actual couriers, Business Post, who rang their driver to chase it.

He claimed to have attempted delivery at 10am. That is a complete lie since my wife has been waiting in all day for it. :x

Seems my instinct was right

They now claim they will be delivering it by 6pm, lets wait and see..

My wife reports it has arrived, phew!

Phil_P Can you tell me how lightweight and small the laptop is, I can read the actual dimensions, but would like yours, or anyones opinion/photographs!

Cheers

How does the processor compare to a Sempron 3600 ?

I have tried a few sites to try and compare but not found anything on the T5270.

Hi bazzaric, many apologies for not responding sooner - due to a combo of having the flu and my wife giving birth to our third!

Anyway, I'm very happy with my 1400 (writing this on it) and glad that I decided to go for it over the 1500. The size is more manageable but still large enough to be fully functional and provide the very usable screen resolution of 1440x900 (I hate to think what the standard 1280x800 looks like on the 15.4" screen, must be huge!).

Only downside I would say is that it is still a bit on the heavy side; it's certainly no ultra-portable!
