Great deal and voted hot. All it needs is a better graphics card to make a good machine a great one.

Worth upgrading the video card to
256MB ATI® Radeon™ HD 3650 for £303 delivered?

Thank you MikeT for this. As an added wrinkle if you add the Logitech MX3200 keyboard and laser mouse the price delivered reduces to £289.86 thanks to the way Dell calculates its discounts.

Yes, although the performance gain will depends on what sort of RAM it has as some of these will have DDR2 rather than GDDR3. It's still worth it at this price as the chip is only a bit slower than a HD 2600 XT:

Dell charge way too much for the 8800 GT. See this post for details of a cheaper option for a much better GPU.

You've got 24 hours and 14 minutes; no need to rush.

Is it worth going for the 19" monitor as well if you need a new one? Pushes the price up to nearer £400 mind.

dells current monitors dont seem to be as good as previous efforts by them. I'd recomend not buying any of them tbh. tesco have a *fairly* nice LG 22" for 130 quid at the moment.

You're better off not buying the monitor as a package as:

1) its usually cheaper to buy the same monitor from Dell as a separate purchase
2) you get 3-yr warranty on the monitor if you buy it separately else its only 1-yr with base units

Hope that helps

This is very tempting, but I'll be using it as a home pc. Can I still buy it or is it just for businesses.

Yes you can! - Don't be put off buy the word "business" it makes no difference if you use it for home. I have a Vostro 410, a bit of a different spec to this one and would deninately recommend one. Ive had it a couple of months and it hasn't put a foot wrong! Very quite as well. BUY IT!

Couple of questions (any help would be greatly appreciated!)
1. Do I need the "16x DVD+/-RW & 48x CDRW/DVD Combo Drive" to write CD's as well as DVDs, or just the 16x DVD +/- RW Drive included in the price?
2. How good is the Logitech EX110 Cordless Keyboard and Mouse?
3. Which is the better anti-virus software, McAfee or Norton?
4. How well will the computer run with just 2gb of ram? Will it be easy to upgrade at home?

Thanks in advance!

1. You only need the included DVD+-RW drive.
2. I’d give it 4 or 5 out of 10; I wouldn’t use one myself after trying my parents’.
3. Pass; I use AVG Free.
4. It depends what YOU do with it; 2GB is enough for the majority I’d say. Previous Vostro’s came with 4 RAM slots which makes it easy to upgrade; I don’t know about this one.

my vista installs have never benefitted from over 2GB RAM.

Ordered the PC thanks. Adding the Logitech MX3200 (worth £55!) like Gleninnes says makes it even cheaper, thanks very much

That's a ridiculously good deal - I've just built my own PC which is similar spec (slightly better graphics - X1650, and I'd imagine better PSU) for about £290, and I wouldn't have bothered if I'd have seen this deal.

I was just wondering how long does Dell delivery take? What if I am at work when its delivered? Can we book Saturday delivery or will it go to local post office etc for pickup?

Secondly, does anyone have any monitor recomendations? Is it possible to get a tele that doubles up as a monitor or is that not worth it? Thanks.

A few weeks back I paid £304 delivered for the Vostro 200 with a Core2duo (everything else pretty much the same spec). Wish I waited a little while now!

1. The DVD-writer will do the job, but you need two drives to copy a CD/DVD to another (say one DVD drive and a DVD-writer).
2. Cordless ones are not too user-friendly, good-quality corded ones are better.
3. Avoid McAfee or Norton at all costs, may use AVGfree or Avast for free. I much prefer Kaspersky, but it is not free. Nod32 is very good, but usually more pricey than others.
4. 2 GB may be ok, but if you feel you need, it is very easy to upgrade Desktop RAM.

I got a quad core Vostro 400 base unit with an ATI HD 2600 XT card, 2GB RAM, 500GB hard drive and both a DVD-ROM and a DVD-writer for about 420 quid earlier this year, so this deal for its 410 successor looks pretty good. I had some "issues" with the 400 though - I don't know if the 410 clears these up though:

1. With a quad core CPU and an ATI half-decent card, my 400 is *not* silent - you can hear the fans all the time, though I wouldn't class it as loud. Yes, I have the BIOS updated that included a fan fix for early 400 models and it hasn't helped.

2. There was a disastrous BIOS bug w.r.t. memory remapping in the 400 that they finally fixed after several months with a BIOS update. Without the fix, you "lost" 768MB RAM from a 4GB RAM system (which is what I upgraded to - 30 quid for 2 extra GB from Crucial).

3. Dell usually ship their Vostros with 32-bit Business Vista with no obvious option to order 64-bit Business Vista with the machine. Yes, Dell do sell Vostros with 4GB RAM pre-installed, but 32-bit Vista limits you to 3.25GB RAM! I hassled Dell UK (there's a 64-bit thread on the Dell Forums about this very issue) enough and they eventually sent me a 64-bit Business Vista DVD for free (worth 200-odd quid if you had to buy it!).

Other than these issues, I'm very pleased with the Vostro 400 and I think the 410 will be a good box too. Mind you, I do like to play computer chess and the latest software is multi-core and 64-bit friendly - really shows off the power more than any other gaming software out there!

Although as said earlier you're probably better off getting the graphics card elsewhere and fit it yourself.

I have heard reports that if you do install a high end graphics card like ati 4850 than you will also need to replace the power supply unit (psu) as these graphics card need power in excess of 500 and therefore may result is a nuclear explosion on your new desktop.
can some1 please tell me from their experience whether or not they had to upgrade the psu on vostro 410 plz as a result of a high end graphic card?
can some1 point me to a compaitable power supply unit in excess of 500 on ebuyer plz

or
2: PowerColor HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 Dual DVI HDTV Out PCI-E Graphics Card (17 reviews)

is the one with more reviews the better graphic card?

thank u

This looks just what ive been looking for, thanks MikeT! £321.59 delivered including 256 ATi card, logitech laser keyboard and mouse - before quidco!

Just one question before I purchase, how does this compare to ]this deal (after removing the monitor):

I can get it to £218.19 delivered with the logitech laser mouse/keyboard. Is the price difference worth 1GB more memory but slower processor and graphics.....

Hi guys,

Seriously looking at this system, looking to upgrade the memory to 4GB as the memory seems relatively cheap and the pc has the spare slots. Do any of you guys know if the below memory at ebuyer will be ok or is there a better way to do things? bit confused.

ebuyer.com/pro…755
(seems to get good reviews)

Is this a good idea, as I read that if we get Vista 32 bit installed on this dell it wont use all the 4GB memory? Where as Vista 64 bit will?

Also i gather ill also need to buy a wireless PCI card to connect it to my standard Sky (netgear) wireless router, any recommendations on bits of kit?

I looked at the PCI cards available by netgear which apparently support upto 108mps that the sky router can kick out, but after reading it says that the only PCI wireless card Netgear sell doesnt support the 108mps speed when used with Vista .

Just my luck!

netgear.com/Pro…spx

Thanks for posting the deal and any help with my lack of technical knowledge etc is greatly appreciated.

Sapphire is a more respected brand than PowerColor so without knowing anything about those cards in particular I know which one I’d go for.

Does the card reader worth upgrading?

My order said allow upto 10 working days for delivery and I'm pretty sure there wasnt any other option. If your not in on delivery then I'm guessing you will get a card like with most couriers to either rearrange delivery or collect from the nearest depot of the courier.

It is possible to get a TV that doubles up as a monitor, just depends what size you want and how much your willing to pay. Ive got a 20" Samsung that I use for my monitor, TV & xbox 360 and there about £200

After reading the description, I'm not sure if this comes with the Vista OS discs, or if it is just preinstalled?

The way it sounds on the website is the only disc you get is the "Resource DVD - (Diagnostics & Drivers)".

Dell include the O/S disc with all Vostro systems from my experience.

worth getting a bigger harddrive?

This sounds a great deal. Will be looking at it and hope to order before midnight? to get the deal? But a bit concerned. Main use will be for online shop with over 800 pages! At the moment, I use XP Pro, which I'm familiar with. From your experience, will I be able to adjust to Vista (hoping my software program will be o.k. too! Net Objects Fusion 9, although when I have time will be changing to Serif x2 Webplus) - don't know whether I should pay more for XP Pro, as really haven't got time to fiddle around with getting used to Vista (from my limited experience not keen but I know it is better on security).

Any quick from any online members greatly appreciated!

Also would like to have 4 gb ram, so should I order 32 bit system if that is all there is and then hassle for 64 bit upgrade??

Thanks!
