Very quick. Thanks very much

I am pretty sure that the model 200s uses a slim-line case, so you are going to have trouble getting low-height cards to fit in it. In particular, the graphics card needs to be a low height one, and there are very few around. You may be better off spec'ing the system up to include a graphics card from Dell.

I was going to ask if anybody (Mike T) might know if this offer was available in a Vostro 200 case (non slim) ?

This deal with the 200 would be £441, and you drop the card reader.

Very tempted - would this be any good as a media centre machine with the standard on board for play mkv files? Does the standard grahics have DVI?

anyone know if there's room in these slimline cases to add another hard drive?

would playback mkv files no problems at all.

Anyone buying... make sure you pick Vista Business.

Microsoft have made it legal to install Windows XP Pro using a Vista Business Licence, this means you have the option of installing XP Pro, Vista or both in a dual boot.

If you pick XP Pro you are stuck... Vista Business gives you choice for the same price, even if you never plan to use it the resale value will be better. It's a no brainer!

I'm talking 720 or 1080 mkvs at 1920x1080 resolution though!

Can anyone tell me how to order this through the home site - thanks!

I can playback 720p mkv on a p4 HT 3.4ghz with onboard gfx - and you can play that res back on a far lower spec.

for 1080 you would need a better gfx card than the onboard to prevent dropped frames if you use the pc for anything else, but with nothing else running a c2d at 2.2ghz should play them back fine (albeit at or around full cpu load).

If you want to playback an original (or BD-R) Bluray disc then you will need to add a proper gfx card.

You aren’t licensed to dual boot Vista Business and XP Pro. You can install XP Pro now and revert back to Vista down the line but you can’t officially dual-boot. I’ve looked at Microsoft’s licensing and they specifically state:

‘Use of the downgraded operating system is governed by the Windows Vista Business License Terms, and the end user cannot use both the downgrade operating system and Windows Vista Business’.

'An end user who downgrades to Windows XP Professional may later return to Windows Vista Business software provided that the end user deletes the Windows XP Professional software from the PC.'

To get the XP Pro disc you need to call Dell Tech support and after a little arm twisting they’ll send you one. Since you bought a PC that you could have specified with XP when you ordered it they sometimes play hard to get. Just say that you have some hardware or software that’s incompatible. I’ve always got the disk when I’ve phoned but sometimes they make me jump through a small hoop.

This is great value. Nice spec machine perfect for business or home use.

Looks like it - Dell will sell it with 2 hard disks "320GB Hard Drive with Dell™ DataSafe Local™ Backup solution (2x320GB)" so shouldn't be a problem

The link goes to the home site by the looks of it! Don't think the Vostro stuff is available on the small business site yet.

Thanks for your reply mate. It does appear to go to the Home site but if you look at the warranty bit it says 'Business Hardware Support' and when you go to purchase it asks for the business name.

As I would like to buy this on behalf of a friend I just want to cover myself in case there are problems - are there any negative implications about pretending to be a business? I searched a MIkeT post and I saw that under a business warranty Dell will not collect from you for free if you want to return it, is this the only difference?

Does anyone know? Thanks

Dont pretend to be a business, just put your name in the box asking for a business name. When asked if its for home or business use put home.
Normal warranty applies so no probs there.

Just wondering how quiet these are ??

what would the onboard graphics be like ? would they be ok for the latest games such as cod4 etc ??

I Would Doubt very much that the onboard graphics card will play COD4

Does the DVD burner offer Lightscribe?

You can lose the monitor and add the ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT 256MB and the Dell Optical Scroll Premium Mouse for a base unit costing £299.04 delivered.

Very. An initial 2 second 'vroom' as you boot up, then very quiet. Unless you have super sensitive hearing, it will be fine.
