Microsoft store has a 15% discount going on select laptops:

"Offer only applies to Dell XPS 15 9550-8076 Core i5 1TB Laptop, Dell XPS 15 9550-8090 Core i7 512GB Laptop, Dell XPS 13 9350-7741 Core i5 256GB Laptop, Dell XPS 13 9350-7765 Core i7 256GB Laptop, Lenovo Yoga 900-13ISK Laptop & HP Spectre x360 13-4108na Laptop"

Use code: gneroyxea

I picked up the xps 13 base model. Some people might debate the specs but it's probably the best 13 incher for my needs. Some of the other laptops on offer are nice too

Glad to hear! Even with the discount, 800 had me a little anxious about the spend but hopefully it's worth it. Before that I'd just received a lenovo with similar specs but the build quality is so poor I'm sending it back.
Would rather get a surface pro for this amount.

I had a Pro 4 and sold it for an XPS 13. The matt display version with full HD, battery life is no longer something I worry about.

Surface Pro 4 was very buggy (I got it at USA launch)

Typing experience on a real laptop is just better.
Another thumbs up here. Got the i7 with QHD screen for a grand shortly after launch. It's the longest I've ever had a laptop or tablet without looking for better. Great battery life. Amazeballs screen. Perfect size.
Had anyone tried the code with the Ubuntu based developer edition?
not sure whether to get this xps 13 or a macbook pro 13 with retina display?? What would you guys recommend?

XPS is vastly superior hardware. but only you can decide what you want. Apple or MS?

I know Microsoft like Linux these days but coming from the Microsoft Store you might be pushing your luck!

Microsoft Store codes won't work on the Dell website (for obvious reasons).
Far better off going for the XPS 15 (unless you need the portability of 13.3"). Another £90 and you get a 960m (£892) and one of the lightest i5/960m/15" laptops around.
Whereabouts does the code go, can't find it anywhere?

Got to the credit card section but didn't go further as I wasn't sure if the transaction would go through or if there was an opportunity to enter the code.

Thanks
XPS13 is not touch screen I think ?

XPS13 is not touch screen I think ?

There is a touch version of the XPS 13. I had a non-touch version when it first came out and undoubtedly was one of the best laptops I've ever used (in twenty years of IT). The only accessory I had to buy to compliment the device was a USB to Ethernet adapter.
It may be of interest to some readers that the Signature Edition being sold by Microsoft will not contain any unnecessary bloat ware (outside of that described as the Windows OS of course!).

Want one but it's still £807.49
this is an okay deal. if you are looking for a pc now thats working out of the box, this is a decent buy. keep in mind that you arent saving LOTS of money but still a decent deal

I have had Dell laptops in the past. There are two consistent problems I have faced: Hard disk failure and battery.

On three laptops I have had, all three had hard disk failure and battery problems after about a year.

Personally, I would stay away from Dell in future but make your own mind up over it.

I would say it depends on if you have any current apple products that you want to sync and also if you want to play some games. Can't see the gpu on this one but it's probably better than the MacBook. I'm a big windows fan but bought a MacBook Air when in the USA a few years ago and it's been fantastic so would thoroughly recommend.
Do *not* buy this laptop if you're considering doing any sort of photo/video work on it - the adaptive contrast makes this type of work impossible, and it cannot be disabled. I bought the 13", and whilst it's a great machine for a good price (and so small!), it isn't suitable for photo work.

I think there is a firmware update available for the QHD version, discussed on the Dell forums here: en.community.dell.com/sup…395

They're good but they're certainly not cheap second-hand, these seem to hold their value as well as equivalent Macbooks - probably because they're well-built and decent quality. For all the people who say XPS aren't worth the money, I would disagree, I'd pay more for a modern XPS over a similar spec high-end Inspiron any day.

On the other hand I'm looking to replace a six year old Dell XPS, simply because the thing is physically falling apart due to years of hard use, but every single component is still running like a charm, and my biggest problem is that I'm literally finding it hard to beat the spec for a reasonable price even six years later.

So YMMV.
The code that needs to be used for discount sounds a bit like newly discovered STD . Good deal, though .
I really want one, but it's really expensive

Is it a good idea to shell out this sort of cash on something that I just want but don't need!?

Damn you HUKD!!!

Voted hot, good discount IMO.
^ Don't.

In all the years I have been servicing equipment, Dell has had no higher failure rates than any other brand.

The hard drive and battery are the two most prone items to fail if the user has certain usage pattens like moving the laptop around a lot while it is powered on or frequently changing the charging status or even letting the battery overheat.

Swapping to a SSD will help with frequent movement as they are not prone to shock damage unlike their mechanical brothers. Allowing better ventilation will help with battery longevity.

I use Windows, Linux and OSX so I'm impartial to a point, a DJ friend of mine bought a Macbook Pro recently (last month) from John Lewis for £1199, to be honest I didn't think it was worth anywhere near that much money. You really have to decide if you want OSX or Windows as there's pros and cons to either. I'd much rather use OSX anyday over Windows 10, but that's my personal preference. I wouldn't pay £1199 for a Macbook Pro either which again is my personal preference, the keyboard I thought was shocking on it, absolutely terrible.

I would try and see for yourself, go to John Lewis or Apple store and try a Macbook. Also if you're a programmer using Python and Ruby you have a head start with OSX as the interpreter for both is built in to the system accessible by Terminal, it's not a big issue to get it working on Windows, but the Mac it's boot up and you're ready to go.

The ones offered by Microsoft Store have a slightly older CPU, slower RAM and non Iris graphics card, so not the latest version - just in case that matters to you.

I managed to talk the dell live-chat into a 10% discount on the latest version which takes it to within about £50 of this version.

Edit - apologies, i'm talking about the i7 version that's also available

Just had a look on the Dell store and I can't see where it says that their base model is any different in spec to this deal's spec. They both seem to have the i5-6200U processor etc... Could you link the model you're referring to?

Well luckily for you, this doesn't use a hard drive and battery lasts well into 2 digits, also it is easily replaceable if you find a need down the line.

Dell Inspiron and Dell Xps are completely different beasts. Xps is a premium machine built to last (a bit longer).

I am debating with myself whether to get an xps 15 or 13.

15 is obviously more powerful of the two and I do like to game there and then, but I also intend to build a gaming pc at some point (those new nvidias seem pretty awesome) but 15 also suffers from bad battery life, at least for the qhd version I would take. (I am never going to save up on the screen again...).

Anyone has some advice about it?
Here's hoping the battery life is as good as it's made out to be as I may have nowhere to plug it in now I've spent next months rent!
The battery life on my old XPS 17 was amazing, especially when my Lenovo y50 can only last about an hour when doing anything excessive and limits games to 30fps off the battery (not sure if there is a setting to change this)

I only sold my XPS because I could get a newer y50 for £420 when it was posted here. I'd recommend the XPS but I'd take a Lenovo if they're a lot cheaper
can anyone comment on the webcam positioning? is it ok for skyping?

i read they had to put it in an awkward spot because of how slim the screen bezel is
Can the UNIdays 15% be knocked off too? I've stacked?
I have the XPS 13 9350 top spec model (big investment) but after a few teething problems it is incredible powerful and eats everything. I had to wait for some developments to release updates to accommodate the hardware etc but haven't looked back since. So much spec in an ultra-portable.

No I have tried and also used the online chat to see if they can do anything but only on promo code at a time
