The point of these types of laptops are that they're compact, lightweight, and relatively decent looking. everybody knows you can buy a gaudy plastic laptop with 2" bezel and red backlit keyboard with a better gfx card for the same money or cheaper.

Guys, someone who is buying this laptop is buying it for the portability as well as performance. It’s better than its MacBook equivalent and other ultra book competitors. Raw specs aren’t everything.

Graphic card not very good for that price

Not 4k!!Cheaper to build one yourself.

For that price you could get a laptop with GTX 1060, maybe even GTX 1070.

It looks like you are paying for the XPS brand and styling. In terms of value this is easily the price of a 15" 1060 laptop.

What is the purpose of XPS range?

Good deal... Quad HD is good balance between battery and screen quality. These are really professional grade laptops... Only thing is CPU 7th gen... 8th gen has 60% multi core boost... But can't go wrong with this price... Heat added

Dells have gone very expensive for what they are. I have owned loads of desktops and laptops from Dell over the years but they are really taking the proverbial IMPO now with their pricing.

As I said you are paying for XPS styling. This is not a gaming laptop and once we get that fact straight in our heads then this deal makes more sense. As others have said, this is a powerful, stylish laptop, designed to compete with MacBooks and not with proper gaming laptops. The 1050 graphics card is a bonus. However for me personally, I would prefer to spend that money on a gaming laptop

What do you expect to find in a MacBook tier ultrabook?
What's the weight, thickness, heat and noise output levels of that 1060/1070 laptop?
In the best case scenario it will be a heavy plastic machine with huge bezels.

The same purpose as the MacBook Pro range.

If you want a gaming laptop grab the Inspiron Gaming for less money and better specs but it won't be build quality or aesthetically on the same level as the XPS.

Sounds exactly like my gaming laptop which is probably why I don't use it very often. LoL

My XPS lasted less than 3 years, and it was never right in the first place! I’m using a MacBook Pro now

Freezing.

Then why does it have a 1050 in it? Crypto mining?

Get real. This is the worst of both worlds.

You have totally missed the point. That's like asking why a MacBook has a separate GPU with 2gb GDDR5 ram. Is that also the worst of both worlds? Its partly marketing, partly the appearance of decent parts, which of course is also marketing.

I haven't missed anything. The point is sales. The only thing missed here; is a sale. To me. And from the looks of this thread; dozens of others.

It's a HQ 7th gen (quad core, 45W part) vs 8th gen which is U series only (15W part). Thus, depending on throttling (this XPS is quite good) should outperform the 8th gen cpu by a little.

A 1050 offers good quality 1080p gaming, maybe not for 'pro gamers' but perfectly fine those wanting to do a few hours a week. Benchmarks prove this, just look.

Personally I think the 4k model makes more sense since the screen is higher quality (not just resolution) and it's a touchscreen. That makes it rarer and one of the best 'do-it-all systems'. The 1080p model has a lot more competition.

Outlet site usually has both for cheaper than this for those that don't mind that.

XPS range over the past 2 years has had a big issue with a bloating battery, thus causing the touchpad to raise and a potential fire hazard!

On my XOS 15 (9530) Dell refuses to replace or fix the hazardous battery at their expense as I was out of warranty by 2 months, it's absolutely terrible and I urge anyone considering buying an XPS to think twice.

Google "bloating batteries XPS", so many complaints and issues.

This is a very expensive laptop, yet Dell seem to think a battery is fine to last less than 2 years. Replacement (Labour & Parts) is in excess of £250!

Will never touch a DELL laptop again whilst the Customer Care team have such a poor attitude!

Upgrade the warranty beyond the 1 year if you're thinking of this.

Think there is likely to be a new 6 cores model next year. Who knows, better things are always around the corner. This is not bad.

Oh no. I bet they're worried. XPS range is popular with travelling professionals who don't want to buy Apple for compatibility etc.
You do realise graphics cards have other uses besides gaming?

They don't care however you seem especially upset and keen to argue about it? Triggered fanboy alert.

I work in a programme of 180 tech contractors. Have yet to see a Dell XPS used by any of them. If it is such a deal, buy it :-)

Calling me a fanboy really undermines the rest of your argument.
Out of interest, what machines are they using? Surely not plasticky gaming hogs?
Most travelling contractors are likely to go for a smaller form factor. I know I would.Dowsnt make this any lesser deal of you want a larger screen.

More than 1/2 of development machines are on XPS models in my office... These are fantastic ones... and light weight too. Unfortunately, I have macbook pro which is bit heavy.
