Shall I use my powers of invisibility for good or evil?!
These are excellent laptops. I bought mine last year in May but they are among some of the best around and unless you want to buy a dell alienware the XPS series is one of the most powerful, especially as you get a dedicated graphics card that is capable of 3d as well as a 3d compatible screen.

I would like to point out that although you don't get backup media you can use either DVD, USB memory stick or an external hard drive when you first setup the system. And having had to restore the system because of an piece of software that caused errors, the restore system is so much easier from usb than on my old hp laptop when it came from a dedicated area of the second hdd.

Miss out on one these at your peril.
Just got mine over a week ago and paid over £900, so this is hot!! Do bear in mind that having the 3D version goes without the Intel Optimus and WiDi (turned off and no idea whether it can be turned on again :(), so if battery life is important, you may want to think again.
what does this mean from Dell in terms of warranty any one...ARB - 1yr Standard Service for your PC
These are the ones with 4 memory slots

Had one 8 months now, awesome bit of kit.
is the warranty collect and return?
You got the laptop with a 3d 1080p screen but no blu-ray drive? :O

dont need bluray player. Will never watch 3d movies on the laptop and besides will need to get the nvidia glasses for that! This 3d 1080p is still the best screen for normal viewing out of all dells options which I will be using for.

I was not aware that 3D would drain the battery. would this happen even if I don't use the 3D feature and is this something that I can disable if not used ?

what is the Intel Optimus and WiDi ?
Intel Optimus, when in windows or other generic windows app it uses the Intel integrated graphics to operate.

When you switch to games or some other graphics demanding app (e.g. CAD) it uses the dedicated card.

It can potentially save battery life, depending on the power consumption difference between the two graphics options for a given processor load.

I know there is a lot of talk on the notebook tech forum on the optimus causing issues. Although I haven't checked for a while so they may have fixed it by now.

Mine is 3D also so no optimus - no issue.

I doubt you would see a dramatic difference between dedicated and optimus as windows won't load up the graphics card anyway.

These machines are listed as Desktop replacements rather than laptops as given the performance they are quite power hungry, battery life depends on usage, but pottering about in windows I get about 3 Hours.

How much?
btw, I have read somewhere that each slots can take 8gb DDR3 sticks (about £45 each), so if you don't have the 4 slots, you may want to go down this option to get 16gb

I've got the 3D glasses which I didn't want to start off with, but the price I paid £970 came with it, and I must admit, it's pretty neat on the laptop. Yeah, these 3D screens are top notch, superb panels.

3 hours !!!!!
I was hoping more like 8 hours with the 9-cell battery .

Yup, I get about the same too, but I tend to have it plugged in all the time, so this doesn't affect me. Hence I thought I warn anyone going for this should look at the alternative.

However, I have read that you can order a non-3D version, which will include the Optimus and WiDi features, then buy the 3D panel separately and replace the standard panel, so you got the best of both worlds. A bit pain inthe butt, but the 3D panel is worth it.

I just hope it's a feature that Dell can turn back on in the future, at least I have the option.

Please can anybody.... let me know?????

Hi ashishdaa...what it means is that there are 4 slots (from what I've read) and you are getting 2 slots filled with 2 x 4GB sticks leaving 2 slots vacant for further upgrades.
Thanks deepu25...

£957! seems like alot but i see you have the added 3 year extended warranty. DIMMS are memory slots so when it says 8GB 2 DIMMS.. it means its got 4gb on 2 slots but these 3d laptops come with 4 slots so you could upgrade if u wanted to in future. I wish I get a backlit keyboard on my laptop. It doesnt say anywhere on any of the laptops if there is a backlit keyboard so might be lucky to find it when it arrives!
Anyone know what the delivery times on these are meant to be? I'd assume as it's the Outlet all of the laptops are already built so it shouldn't be too long but not sure.
Thanks dmaster2000
The other difference is I had taken i7 2720 (As I have checked intel site it supports 32GB RAM so I can get 4X8GB and it should support) and not 2670 (Max supported is 16GB).
Mine Estimated delivery is 20th Feb.
cheapest i can find is 779 in total wat am i doing wrong
I dont think the OP's price is without vat added.

Mine cost £672 but with delivery and VAT it came to £827. Undiscounted price for same machine on dell website is around £1900 !!!! Course Dell will currently knock £400 off.
Another interesting thing to note. Before I looked at the Dell Outlet I specced an XPS up with exactly the same spec I posted earlier and it came to £1200 + with the current offers on the Dell site.

I opened a Chat window and told the rep it was too much can they do anything about the price and within a few minutes they came back with £1085 !

I would have purchased it too if I had not seen the same machine for £820 in the Outlet.

Ordered mine on the 8th. Delivery says on or before the 16th.
i bought an inspiron 17R which had basically pretty much same spec but 2gb nvidia graphics and without the 3d.

the lid mechnasim just broke

i want to know is it worth paying extra for an xps and what are the advantages over an inspiron

i paid £504 for the inspiron and the spec was this::
