Ok thanks so much!

As a comparison if you buy from Dell via Quidco you can get a lower spec for £677:

4GB RAM
6 Cell Battery
GT 525M 1GB (10% slower)
500GB HDD
Longer delivery time

But you gain a mobile broadband module.

Is this laptop better for gaming than a same processor, 250gb, 17" 1600x900, gt 550m, 4gb RAM and 6 cell battery?

I prefer the better graphics card as its mainly a gaming laptop and those mobile broadbands are awful....
Also the more RAM, HDD and better battery would cost more than £130, also does it have the same CPU?

XPS 17 for £899 (£847 after Quidco)

i7-2630QM
4GB
3GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M Graphics Card - 3D Capable
500GB (7,200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive
9-cell 90Whr Lithium Ion battery
17.3 FHD 3D WLED TL (1920x1080) 1080p

Much better screen, GPU about 30% faster but obviously you’ll get lower frame rates if running both systems at the native screen resolution.

Both deals via the usual suspect - dmxdimension.

Or downgrade to the standard 17.3” screen and it comes to £745 after Quidco or £791 otherwise.

Excellent deal, I got this exact laptop from Dell this week, it's everything a laptop should be.

I got nearly the same specs as this deal but with the 1080P screen (in my opinion, a must) and a 3yr on site warranty, but only 6GB RAM not 8 for £944.

You'd be hard pushed to be disappointed with this laptop's performance.

Admittedly the 540M is only a lower-mid range card but it still packs a fair old punch for a laptop. Just been playing Portal (not Portal 2 yet but doubt there's much difference in the graphics engine) in 1080P full settings with vertical sync etc and it doesn't skip a beat.

It will struggle with games like Crysis on high settings but if you're a serious laptop gamer, you should be looking at the Alienware range with superior graphics capabilities anyway.

Have a look here to see how it compares:

The backlit keyboard is definitely a nice touch if you can get it

Ahh thanks, I keep wanting to buy one, but dont need it for 5 months, I have done a lot of research and think i'll wait 5 months as a lot will change by then, thanks anyway!

I got this system but with 6gb of ram for £703 a month ago and its such a sweet machine! Tres happy!

It doesnt take much of a pc to run sc2 on high specs.

My old 8800GT + phenom x4 had no problems playing maxed out.

I have a XPS 17 1st gen which has the 445m GPU, and it can run Crysis 2 at full settings with no lag

But I really want to buy this however the graphics card is iffy for me, however the price is a bargain!

Portal 2 runs better than Portal 2, with a better engine as well.

this is a top notch laptop

Good, I may buy one then- its ironic how its my deal but I am the only one with a slight problem with it (Its because im picky, aha).

You can get similar spec'd laptops for around the same money.

scan.co.uk/pro…bit

As an example, but there is an asus model which comes with a 1080p screen 8GB ram and a larger hard drive and blu ray drive for around £770. Why is this hot in any way?

Sorry for my previous comment. Didn't realise this was for the XPS 15 and thought it was XPS 17. This graphics card is apparently abit worse than the one that came with my 1st gen XPS 17. If you're a serious gamer i'd suggest an XPS 17 if you don't mind the size and lack of portability. Otherwise I'd suggest getting a desktop. The alienware laptops are good for gaming but cost crazy prices, so not so sure it's worth it.

Your link is only 4gb and 500gb HDD?

i recently got this machine. xps17. i love it. one big gripe though. the fan keeps starting and stopping without reason. the 3d models are not optimus enabled from what i read and i dont know too much. beautiful laptop though, but the out of control fan is starting to wind me and many others up. we are hoping for a solution because its a machine you wanna keep

edit- sorry, just realised my little review is pretty much irrelevent to this deal, but have read that the fan problem is kinda common amongst the xps line. i recently had an xps 15 first generation i7, and the fan was not a problem, but there seems to be some probs with the dell 2nd gen i7's

Edited by: "expired" 30th Apr 2011

Nice spec!! would like a blu ray with it though

Yes it is but thats just an example, there are many models of laptop at this price. Each with slightly differing specs and £800 is the "average price". Just not sure why you would rate this as hot..

lambda-tek.com/com…c=y

Is another example, but has 700GB hard drive...

Or eshopbrokers.co.uk/pro…826

With a blu ray disk drive...

review from notebookcheck.net says it can get very hot even at idle state.

ive had a couple of these 2nd gen dell xps, and it really hasnt got close to too hot for me. as i said, the annoying fan is the only big prob, which im hoping they'll try and fix with a bios update, but that is just hoping

Both 6 cell batteries, who wants 9......?

The XPS 15 with a 9 cell battery is fairly heavy and bulky for a 15.6 incher. From my experience of using that combination the 9 cell just pushed it over my comfort zone for what I call a portable computer. Ironic as it gains the battery life but loses the portability.
If you prefer a compact laptop bag then the protruding battery can be an issue.

Nice system and if the specs precisely match your requirements it’s a good price.

wouldnt go near anything with a NVIDIA graphics chip.
my laptop got the black screen of death due to one of there dodgy chips.
NVIDIA denied it was there fault although the whole world proved it was.(google it)
stay away from NVIDIA !

best deal for sandy bridge i7 lappys AFAIK!!

This seller used to buy loadsssssss of laptop off the del outlet so may be worth checking you are getting a 'New' one! He also charges a 20% restocking fee for returns which is not legal in the UK.

Buyer beware!

How many minutes of battery life does this get? Seems to be suspiciously absent from the item page...
