I make mine as a strong espresso shot (or two) and top up with very hot water. I find I get a better taste this way as well.
On the esam 4200 you can do this, maybe same on this model
With the machine in standby/off mode, press and hold the One cup button until the row of lights come on below. You should see the default of 2 lights is showing. Now press the two cup button repeatedly to select your desired setting out of a possible 4 settings. When set, press the 1 cup button again to save your setting, and the machine will go back to off
Me too, so I make the drink stronger add the milk then pop in microwave for 1min, works a treat. Great machine
Works on this model as well as esam 4200 page 18/22 of manual

Edit. Voted hot, it wasn't quite this model, maybe one or two up from here, but our office one got hammered daily and rarely broke down
Yes - my office machine (a 4200 which is basically the same machine as this - the numbering convention makes no sense...) has been in for a year. It gets absolutely hammered and has probably seen several years of equivalent home use. Loads of the staff use it and it simply hasn't missed a beat.
If it did ever break down I would get it repaired and if it couldn't be repaired I would definitely be buying another one.
If you do a bit of Googling Delonghi have a fantastic reputation for coffee machines. I would recommend them to anyone.
I wonder if DeLonghi intended to make the ever lasting coffee machine......?! I would of quite happily brought another one after 5 years if it had broke.
This is THE major drawback with this machine. The stainless steel top does NOT HEAT up any cups placed upon it and is for design purposes only.
This machine is only good for lattes and cold coffee IMHO.
Yeah, but it's a PITA and even then doesn't result in a hot shot.

Edit: Oops - beaten to it already!
Had any problems with coffee grounds being spilled inside the machine? Mine's 5 years old and has started doing this. Not a huge problem, but a bit annoying.
Yeah it's been doing it for a whilst, just give it a clean every couple of weeks with a cloth
Nope... microwave used to heat the milk only
I have this machine, Tip to make it warmer, run some water though the steam spout before dispensing drink
Water is never hot enough
Too fiddly, requires alot of cleaning and maintenance.
I dumped it in the bin last month. yes, even at that price
You need new Delonghi ESAM 4200 Diffuser

Absolute rubbish, if you set it to 4 instead of the 2 it comes out of the box on it'll produce a double shot at exactly the temp it's supposed to be. You're probably used to overheated coffee!
The steamer is very good IF you pull the paranello wand off and then surf the top to build volume and then plunge it deep to bring it up to temperature.
Two essential buys to go alongside one of these, milk thermometer and double walled glasses, this set is perfect and been a bargain price for years...

Big glasses for long coffees and the little ones hold exactly a double shot, keeps your drink hot for ages.
Excellent. Thank you.
Keep an eye - they seem to go in and out of stock a fair bit. They've been out and back in once already today.
Changing the water temperature can have a dramatic affect on the taste of your coffee. I just changed my 4200 from 2 to 3 and the resulting coffee is significantly more bitter (I use quite expensive Illy beans). I've read about boiling water 'burning' coffee before and dismissed it, but there was definitely an effect on my machine (i'm not enjoying this cup at all!)
