I put my cup under when switching it on so that the hot water warms my cup. I then empty the cup down the sink, give it a quick rinse and then prepare my coffee into the cup.

I use a glass to catch the cleaning cycle water when switching off.

I have this model and use it 2-3 times a day normally. I fully clean it out once a month and the collection tray and drip tray when indicated by the warning light. About twice a year I run a chemical clean where it gets flushed through. Lights come on to indicate when this is needed. I normally get 2 big cups of coffee from the tank which includes the switching on/off cycles. It is a brilliant machine for the money. It’s hardly an issue filling the water tank up though

I’ve heard the same on here many times I’m really tempted with this.
Great machine but it requires too much attention.. Every time its on and off there is cleaning which drains a lot of water so refilling the tank and emptying the draining tray are too often..

The time you save in tamping coffee grounds etc, small price to pay. Depending on how much you use it you can pre-empt a lot of this and just make it routine.

I've got a small glass that I keep under outlet. Switch machine on, empty glass, make coffee, put glass back under, switch off. Easy and takes 10 seconds "attention" at most.
No wonder you have to keep emptying drip tray if you just let it run in there

I've had mine 16 months and only had to chemical clean it through the once. It tells you on the machine itself when it needs doing.
I clean it thoroughly every about 2 to 3 weeks, and grease the slide every few months.
No trouble at all really.
I've got one of these, use it several times a day for the past 2 years, works flawlessly without fault etc. Light comes on when ready to descale etc.. About every 2 weeks. I ignore it for a few more Pretty straight forward and takes about 20 minutes. I clean it out every month.

Descale light comes on every 2 weeks?
That can't be right, mine took 8 months for the 1st time. You did set it up correctly for you water hardness test before first use?
No I tell a lie I've descaled it twice so far in 16 months.

I'm in a very hard water area, Yes I used the test strip that came with it and have a large family, We all use it a lot. I would guesstimate 12 large coffee's on an average day. Guests have it as well

Exactly. I purchased a like new one 2 years ago and it's been great.
I purchased this in Jan from eBay and it was a used refurb (even with a little coffee grind still in the machine when it was delivered) but nevertheless still worked perfectly. It's been used 2-3 times a day without fail. Overall it has paid itself back already as the quality was good enough to stop my other half from getting his coffee from shops everyday.

I've got slightly different model but bought refurb about five years ago and never done any maintenance to it, still going strong but doees need servicing or replacing now as seals are leaking a bit.
OOS now. Been thinking about getting one for a while and this seems great! Can't wait to use it! Thanks for the post!

Don't be put off - even the brand new ones have a bit of coffee grind in them, when they're delivered. They're tested with real coffee when the grinder is calibrated at the factory.
I have the ESAM 4200 and use it for 3 or 4 coffees every day. Its my best ever buy....

Just one tip - don't just try it once, think its a rubbish taste and stick in in a cupboard.
THere's a lot of trial and error to adjust the settings for different coffee beans. There are loads of guides on the interweb. Take some time trying different settings to find your preferred strength and grind - and you'll be hooked!
