Demigod, a full-featured RTS-hybrid inspired by the popular Warcraft III … Demigod, a full-featured RTS-hybrid inspired by the popular Warcraft III custom map Defense of the Ancients -- usually "DotA" for short. For anyone unfamiliar, the concept of DotA was simple: two teams on opposite ends of the maps race to infiltrate one another's bases to destroy a special structure located at the heart: the "Ancient." Each player controls a Warcraft III hero unit, gaining experience and gold as it defeats AI "creeps" in battle. Creeps spawn from both sides of the map, and they travel down lanes toward the opposing base, aiding in the player-controlled hero's siege, becoming more powerful as the lines of defense buckle. RTS games in general are typically pretty abstract; just think about the grunt-churning structures and how they occupy compact spots in the genre's highly-compressed landscapes. But the DotA-style games in particular go one step further in order to enable their hurried play styles.Demigod pretty much follows this style to a tee, though it expands on it considerably. At its heart, though, is a kooky high concept: there's a vacancy in the pantheon of gods that rules over the game's world. Every "hero" unit in Demigod is a mortal spawn of one of these deities who's striving to occupy that exalted space. In order to determine which among them is worthiest, they play DotA in real life. The game doesn't appear to take itself too seriously, in other words. The look is pretty whimsical -- think your typical high fantasy setting fast-forwarded about 3,000 years, with ultra-evolved magic in place of high technology. Bestial humanoids comprise the rank-and-file, and creatures that lead designer John Comes refers to as "catapultasaurses" occupy a hazy role somewhere between heavy cavalry and artillery.
