Great price for an entry receiver

Denon home cinema receiver: the AVR-X540BT is a 5.2 channel affair which, Denon says, is based on the design of its other X-series receiver.

On the device are five HDMI inputs, all of which support 3D and three of which support HDCP 2.2/4K 60p as well as 4K Ultra HD with 4:4:4 Pure Color pass-through.

There are five channels of amplification, delivering a total of 650W, and support for two subwoofers so you can build a hefty sounding set-up. Denon also includes a microphone, so you can adjust the parameters for your room size and shape.

For your phone, the AVR-X540BT has Bluetooth connectivity and can remember up to eight Bluetooth devices. There's also a USB port on the front panel that can play MP3, WMA, FLAC and AAC music files, as well as charging portable devices in case your gadgets run out of juice.

Do people still listen to loud blaring music on huge amped up speakers? I thought we left all that in the 70s and 80s??? Chaved up!!!

Really???why and why would I want something that will make so much noise and how many HDMI enabled equipment do you need when you have a smart tv apart from maybe a game console???

Ever heard of 'home cinema'? It's like the cinema but at home. And with that comes the need for high quality audio equipment, which of course is capable of creating a fully immersive cinema-like experience with powerful bass and surround sound.

You are an incredibly narrow minded specimen. Ever considered that people may have requirements for the following HDMI enabled devices: Sky/Virgin/BT TV box, PC, game console(s) (There are more than one!), Amazon Fire TV, CCTV systems, etc. ?

This is for you TV/home theatre set up. Put all your hdmi connections in and then get the sound to go to the surround sound. It's well worth it if you watch a lot of TVs/movies

Also, you tend to find more than one person watching a screening in the cinema.

I mean why do you need a big tv, just watch movies and play games on your phone close up with headphones. It's the same, surely.

This is why I am baffled!! With a smart tv or games console, you can do Netflix, NowTV (sky), Amazon etc......and really???why do you need 2 consoles). Also do you really need all that noise to enjoy a movie???
My Sony STR KS100 Surround Sound System has randomly be going into protect mode? No idea why checked all the speaker wires etc, anyway 2 days ago it went into protect mode permanently and even with all the speaker cables removed its stuck there and won't come on. Tried cleaning inside etc nothing works :-(

It used to sound really good, all the speakers look brand new so ideally I'd like to keep them as I don't see the point in replacing them if they work.

Here's the rear view of my old receiver:

manualslib.com/man…e=7

I'm guessing the surround speakers would work ok its just the Subwoofer? The Denon in the OP looks like the Sub connects via a 3.5mm audio jack so would I also need a new subwoofer as the Sony just looks like normal 2 core speaker cable with a plastic moulded plug?

Cheers
Shame it has no phono input.

Looks proprietary to me. Those speakers won't work with this receiver.

Consoles have exclusives. Mainly PlayStation. Having an XBOX as well isn't so hard to believe.

Can you explain better please? Thought speakers were speakers, as long as the impedances were correct? Can't I just cut the Sony plugs off then its just normal speaker wire between the Sony Speaker and receiver?

That's what I was just about to say. If the power handling is up to it, and the impedance within spec, they will work, as a cheap stopgap at least. But you would need a powered subwoofer - don't go too cheap on that.

How old are you? Like 90!? Do you live under a rock? I guess that'd explain your lack of technological understanding and you're apparent dislike for surround sound systems!

1) consoles have exclusives
2) Smart TV apps, such as Netflix, etc. usually have limited picture/audio capabilities when compared to dedicated devices such as the Amazon FireTV.
3) Why does the noise factor bother you? You don't have to have it up full blast and should be set according to room size and viewing content.

It baffles me that you even comment here!

The sub doesn't matter as long as it's active. BK make some good ones.

These receivers have a thing called a "volume control" You don't have to have it up to maximum all of the time. In fact when we last went to the cinema I found it way too loud, I don't listen to films that loud at home.

In fact that movie experience reiterated to me what good value my low to mid range home cinema setup is. We paid nearly £60 to get in, £20+ for drinks and snacks, the "premium" seats we paid extra for weren't very comfortable, the sound was way too loud and not very clear - it sounded clipped, and the picture wasn't brilliant - the gamma in dark scenes was terrible, and this was on screen 2 of the multiplex. With the cost of petrol it probably cost us about a 20th of what I have spent on home cinema kit over the years. And the cinema business wonders why ticket sales continue to plummet! If it wasn't for my kids demanding to go and see films when they come out, I wouldn't bother, watching blurays at home is a much nicer experience.

To be honest I have no idea, I don't know what is good value at the moment. I only research kit when I need to replace something - and every time I get annoyed at the clearly manufacturer paid for "professional" reviews, and all the apparent shilling going on in the "customer" reviews. Have a look on avforums.com - though take a lot of what you read there with a pinch of salt - lots of fan-boying goes on. Gosh I'm a cynic

Burger King?
I love it when people write a stupid comment then delete it but it's too late as someone else quotes it. We've all done it but still makes me laugh

Anyway, I don't even see the need for headphones, let alone a home cinema sound system. A crystal mono earpiece is more than enough for anyone watching tv or films, on your black and white 12" TV.

Im deciding which one to choose as iv been looking for a while
Richer sounds are also selling the Yamaha RXV383 or the Pioneer VSX531 for £199
Is this Denon better then them ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Anyone know of any receivers with more HDMI (like 8 or 10) preferably with at least 5 supporting HDCP 2.2/4K ? Need to replace my "does 4k but doesn't support it " Harmon Kardon AV171.

Well I think you are going to have to work out which is best for yourself. Because hardly anyone, except maybe an AV salesman, will have experience of all three, and the salesman might be biased I think Richer Sounds will let you hear and compare receivers, so that might be your best decision maker.

As a last resort the easiest thing to look for is any bulging capacitors and replace, a long shot.
As to all the noise here about having surround sound, they will inevitably be on loud to get all that stomach churning bass.
It will be annoying to any one with party walls, the last time had a surround system going was in detached house and since am using a pair of Sony surround wireless headphones, gets near the same effect.

Yes that would be the best way.
I was hoping someone could tell if one has better features over another or if one is more Powerful. I have read a fair bit about all 3, they all seems good, but as its my first one and all roughly the same price I was hoping for one the techys impartial advise.

I was tempted as my sofa which doubles up as an amp 😜 has an incompatibility with my Samsung tv but it really is an entry level model. Ideally something with airplay and must have an Ethernet socket for ip control for me. Still this is great value
