Denon DHTT100 Soundbase - (alternative to a soundbar) £179 at Richer sounds & Amazon

Found 24th May 2014
Been watching the prices on this sound base and the Panasonic offering (HTE80) for the last few weeks and this Denon unit finally dropped in price this morning!
Seems to get good reviews and is the best unit in my opinion under £300.

This was on sale for £229 everywhere recently and the rrp is £250. So a drop down to £179 is a bargain!
Available in store only at Richer Sounds - so you will need to ring to check stock availability. I managed to get one ok this morning and also used a £10 VIP voucher to bring it down to £169.

If you are not on the mailing list - just join up now and you should also get the £10 off £100 spend.

Looks like Amazon have also just price matched this and are offering it for £179 now if you want to order online:
amazon.co.uk/gp/…294

Product info: denon.co.uk/uk/…100

Unit size is: 608 x 71 x 355 mm
It has Bluetooth streaming, optical, coax and analogue 3.5mm inputs.

Seems to be a very well designed and packaged product with features such as remote learning so you can use your TV/sky remote to control the volume.
Also includes the optical cable and stereo jack adaptor which is rare nowadays.

I will test it out tomorrow but let me know if you have any questions. The reviews on amazon are pretty comprehensive though.

Great price this was a more expensive contender to the maxell I just bought, however £20 difference I would have been tempted. Heat added

Do they do liver?

Got one of these, great sound and well worth £179 or more.

No you can't get delivery from Richer sounds or buy online - but it the same price at Amazon now (and it is in stock) so best ordering from there.

I listed it as a richer sounds deal as you can get an additional £10 if you are on their mailing list and buying in store is better if you have one nearby as you can always take it back there if there are any issues and also their customer service is pretty good.

Can't you get decent 5.1 surround systems for this price? Just wondering why this is better.

No but they do heart and soul.
Well they do tear mine out every time I see a decent Richer deal and then realise nearest store is 160 miles away.
At least this is on Amazon, must resist.

Can anybody tell me if the Sony Bravia KDL40W5810 has the necessary optical output to use this? I'm away from home at the moment. Ta.

been looking at the cambridge audio minx tv sound base for £199 at richer sounds/amazon recently. Anyone know how this compares?

I would also like to know the comparison to this and the minx tv from Cambridge audio. That has superb reviews for its sound.

I have also been looking into buying a Cambridge minx tv and would love a comparison (already have a portable minx go which I'm very happy with for £100)

If it has a digital / optical out then you're golden

the cambridge audio minx is huge! Went to look at these a few weeks ago. Ended up with the Canton DM50, it is superb. Not as good as a 5.1 system but if space is an issue these devices are great for a tv sound upgrade.

Trusted reviews say this is the best of the budget boxes but that at £250 they say it's not necessarily the best value but at this price it clearly is.

Review here:

trustedreviews.com/den…e-2

What Hi Fi don't rate it above the Cambridge whathifi.com/rev…100

"In the end, though, it isn’t enough. The Denon is an inoffensive listen, but it just doesn’t stand out from the crowd – a crowd that includes exciting and dynamic rivals such as the Cambridge Audio Minx TV and Canton DM 50.

It’s decent value if you want a smooth and easy operation, but we’d look elsewhere for outright sound quality."

Honestly, I've owned this for more than 4 months after testing the BOSE SOLO for 1 wk. ( I had to return The Bose Solo because its just an over-priced average soundbox) Though I paid more for my Denon

Denon DHT-T100 makes the bose Solo look like a kid's juke box. Delivering crisp voice and good bass. It beats the Bose Solo more even in the areas of Bluetooth , TV remote use...etc..etc

I tried out a few at my local Richer Sounds a couple of months back. Both sounded very good and I would have been happy with either, but in the end I preferred the Denon for a few reasons:

- The Denon had a more neutral controlled bass. It just sounded better for TV and movies. I felt the CA was good but a little boomy at times. The CA speakers are better suited for general music than for example Eastenders or Avatar (that's some of the content I tried).
- The Denon has a neat remote control learning feature which lets you control its volume with your TV's remote. This is super useful if you don't want to add another remote to your living room.
- I preferred the Denon's sound profiles and found them more useful. For example, it has a 'night mode' which normalises volume, tones down the woofer and reduces the wideness of the sound (I'm not a tech audiophile so I don't know the proper term for that). This is handy if your other half is asleep in the next room and you don't want to be reaching for the remote at every action scene.

Hope that helps

Surely though, if space is an issue, you can buy a cheap 5.1 system which will not only have small satellites, but the sound quality would be leagues ahead of virtually any soundbar?
I cant think how tight space must be to force you to buy a soundbar.

A £100 5.1 system would be miles ahead of this soundbar.

Here are some examples:
amazon.co.uk/One…tem
amazon.co.uk/Edi…tem
amazon.co.uk/Log…tem
amazon.co.uk/Cre…tem

All of the above are cheaper than the soundbar in this thread.
They will offer true 5.1 sound.
And the satellites are small, so should be able to blend into the background of most living rooms.
Sound quality will be better and the 5.1 will add excitement when watching movies - you know when bullets and sounds are coming from all directions. Soundbars can't do this.

Bose, I believe, were the first company to be offering soundbars (single speaker solutions).
These were considered lifestyle products and offered poor sound quality compared to proper hifi.
Costs were high. Style was high. You paid for the style - not sound quality.
Then for some reason, single speaker systems caught on and other manufacturers started making them.
From a sound quality perspective, I cannot recommend a single speaker solution (sound bar).

And if sound quality is not important to you, why would you buy a sound bar?
Makes no sense.

Anyway, peace out people. The weather in London is glorious today. Have a great weekend.

I've had one of these for a few months now and am very pleased with it. Didn't want a traditional ugly sound bar getting in the way.

minx 5 star what hifi, denon 3 star

Canton DM50 looks nice with lots of great reviews but its way out of my price range for a sound base.

Flip between this one and cambridge for me although the height (20cm!!!) of the cambridge might sway me to buy this one.

The Cambridge Audio Minx does seem to get good reviews so I would also try to check that out in store if you are undecided. As mentioned in the post above - the height of that put me off and was not a good a fit under the TV as the Denon is.

For those questioning why you would purchase this over a soundbar or dedicated 5.1 - then the main reason is ease of use and limited space!
If you are after deep 'bass' sound especially for music - then you may be better off with a soundbar with a dedicated sub. However if you have limited space like in my case and need to fit it in to a small sized stand/unit or alcove then there are not many options as most soundbars are over 80cm (standard width of a 32" TV).

There are always better options (usually at a price!) - but I would also check out the Orbitsound T12 or M10 soundbars on ebay as you can pick them up for around £150 refurbished (which is a good prices considering the (£250-300 RRP). The only putting me off on them was the extra remote required to adjust the volume (don't think it would be compatible with Sky+) and the lack of bluetooth on the T12.

@Sunama - I would not really recommend any of the 5.1 systems you linked to on Amazon as these are all for PC/Laptop use. Yes they will give you a pretty good sound for the money (mainly due to the subwoofer) but they are not designed to be used with a TV. For example you would not be able to easily adjust the volume and it would need to be left on permanently.

Another good feature on the Denon is that it will automatically shutdown and go in to standby mode (using around 0.5W) if no audio is detected. So you don't need to turn it on and off with the TV.

Hope that helps

After a lot of thinking we just bought one from amazon.

I'm sure it will be a lot better than the puny speakers from the 42" Panasonic g20 plasma we have.

I nipped into the Bose shop today & had a demo of their version. I can't say I was blown away by the sound quality but it was way, way better than the TV speakers which sounded horrible & tinny by comparison. My Denon arrives tomorrow :-)

Sorry for silly question but does this plug into the tv or my skybox? What leads do I use to connect to either?

Please let me know what you make of your new purchase. I have the Panasonic 50GT50, and the sound on that is terrible in comparison to my 6 year old Panasonic 42PZ8. My only reservation is to whether the TV stand is too big to sit on this. I have spoke with Richer Sounds, who said it will fit, but then I have seen some comments online saying the dimensions are smaller than the stand. It would be great if you could let me know the maximum dimensions the stand can be.

The way I read it was you simply plug one end of the cable into the sound base and the other end into your tv (optical is best I think but it comes with other connections).

I measured the base of my Panasonic and it might be a close fit as its oval shaped but I'm sure it will be fine although it does look like the base has a cut out at the back where the cables go making it slightly smaller in width.

At a guess I would say you might be on the limits for the weight, our 42" plasma is 23.5 kg and the max weight is 27kg so your monster 50" might be too heavy.

Edit* google search brings back the weight of your tv as 27.034 kg so you will be ok....I think.

If price is no issue how does the Sony XT1 and Panasonic HTE 80 compare to the Denon in terms of sound quality? Can't decide
Edited by: "unine" 27th May 2014

I just had a brief play around with mine & am very impressed. Setting it up was a piece of cake and to my untutored ears it sounds a bit better than the Bose soundbase. Thanks for posting!

donslibi

Can't you get decent 5.1 surround systems for this price?

No.

Great deal - ordered. The sound from my Sony 47-KDLNX703 is pathetic. Had it hooked by to a 5.1 in the old house, but in the new place, its not so straightforward.

Fascinating that people still use What Hi-Fi as a purchase guide. The magazine that used to give 5* reviews to 1m HDMI cables costing £50.

Use your ears, use your eyes, then work out the value

Brilliant, had a mail from amazon this morning and mine is arriving today will post thoughts after i play with it for an hour or 2.

Edit* So much clearer than the TV speakers and we can now pick up all the subtle sounds we have been missing for years.

Took it to about half way up in volume and it's very loud.

Found movie wide setting the best out of the 5 and also set the tv and sky remote for volume up and down as it can learn some settings.

Very pleased with the purchase as its made a massive difference so if your sitting on the fence jump

Darren.
