So old fashioned. Does anyone still have these things in their houses?

Sure. Not everyone is happy with soundbars and Sonos devices.

Good price. Was tempted by one of these a while back, with the optical input you can connect it to a chromecast audio and use Spotify from your phone.

You don't need optical to use a Chromecast audio.

Indeed you don't. But this most likely has a better DAC in it. If it does, you're better off using optical.

Only works with Spotify premium. I borrowed a Chromecast Audio from a friend and was really shocked at how few apps support it. Youtube, Amazon Music and Groove don't work either.

I was going to say yes as I thought it was just a DAB and FM tuner (no amp) but I see it's wireless so you can connect to it from anywhere on your network to receive DAB and FM radio directly rather than over the Internet, which has advantages

It's not wireless (unless you count traditional radio) but as others have said, that's easily remedied. Also works well when connecting an iPod or iPad via the USB socket.

Yes, seems I've got it all wrong it's just a mini hi-fi system with 30 watt output with dab and fm radio and a cd player

You can connect it to a PC or TV for example. Or like someone said, a Chromecast audio. Or even some cheap Bluetooth receiver.

Bought my dad one of these and a set of speakers a few years ago. Cracking little system. He absolutely loves it. Great alternative to a Bluetooth speaker.

Exactly. Don't let the lack of built-in wireless put you off. I have my TV connected to one optical input and a Chromecast audio in the other. I'm using it with a pair of 20-year-old Wharfedale speakers and am really impressed.

Can you plug an iPhone into this at all?

Yes, wired, using USB or a 3.5m male to RCA male cable.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/s/ref=is_s_ss_i_4_6?k=3.5mm+to+rca&sprefix=3.5mm+

Wireless possibly a Bluetooth receiver like this

amazon.co.uk/gp/…1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1492201045&sr=8-2π=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=bluetooth+receiver&dpPl=1&dpID=41kqwMjV5RL&ref=plSrch

You can buy optical versions or use a 3.5mm female to RCA male cable to connect the receiver to the Denon. Then you would connect the phone to the Bluetooth adapter and play your music.

That's if the iPhone supports Bluetooth like this. Android does.

The USB socket works fine with my iPad mini so it should be OK with an iPhone.

Some people like to play music on half decent speakers instead of rough 192kbit mp3 or sometimes worse when streaming over some tinny Bluetooth speaker.

That's why I bought the Audiocast M5 device over chrome cast audio. AirPlay all media on iOS device inc streaming non premium Spotify.
