Hi-Fi Deal of the Week - Ends tomorrow 28/4/2016 (STILL AVAILABLE 1st May)

Available online and instore.

This looks like a bit of a bargain. Retails from around £185+ but speakers are usually an extra £70.

Cute and compact to look at but with a powerful heart, the Denon Piccolo N4 punches hard.

Small box, big sound
Despite its compact size, the Denon Piccolo manages to punch hard. Using a digital amplifier it packs a power output of 40 watts per channel (at 4 ohms) for a sound that's big enough to fill most rooms. Supplied with two-way speakers, the sound is also life-like, detailed and much more spacious than similarly-priced Bluetooth systems with non-detachable speakers.

Support for high resolution music
With support for FLAC HD/WAV/AIFF/ALAC files at up to 192kHz/24 bit resolution (FLAC), the Piccolo offers the potential for sound quality that greatly exceeds CD. With High Resolution music files now widely available, this is a great way of hearing music at its best.

NFC Bluetooth and AirPlay
With Bluetooth connectivity it's easy to connect compatible devices and stream music wirelessly. Connect up your smartphone, tablet, laptop, PC and Mac and stream your music library or favourite music streaming services with ease. Thanks to NFC (Near Field Communication) connecting via Bluetooth is as simple swiping your compatible device next to the Denon. The Piccolo is also compatible with Apple AirPlay, making it ideal for use with your iPhone or iPad.

DLNA and built-in wi-fi for the complete networking experience
The Piccolo also comes with Wi-Fi, Internet radio and DLNA. Simply connect to your home network using an Ethernet connection or Wi-Fi and you can access thousands of Internet radio sites via vTuner as well as subscription services such as Spotify Connect. DLNA 1.5 compatibility lets you stream from other sources such as your laptop or NAS drive.

USB, Optical, and RCA phono inputs
Up front there's a USB socket. Compatible with most iPods/iPhones, it offers a convenient way of listening to music stored on your iPhone, iPod or USB storage device. Other connections include an RCA phono input and an optical digital input - ideal for connecting your TV, Blu-ray player, games console or other compatible source. Finally, there's a subwoofer output, giving you the chance to significantly boost the sound with your own active subwoofer.

For the little system that thinks big, don't overlook the Denon Piccolo N4.

I'm not an expert but I've just looked and the DM40 gets really good reviews so I'd guess not. That wouldn't be to say that this one is bad, it also gets good reviews. Then there's the difference in price suggests that the DM40 would be better. The main feature of this one is the internet and streaming capabilities. The DM40 doesn't have those.

True enough. So which would you say was best? DM40 and CC audio, or this?

Think the dm40 +cca deeks, as at least with the dm40 you can listen to the dab or cd's
if ye olde internet is down ;-) if you have a rock solid set up and no dsl downtime then
the price of this with speakers is amazing!
Does the system have a DAB alarm, so can i use it as alarm in the morning with the radio?

I would say weigh up the factors....

Are you likely to listen to CDs at all or stick to FLAC/MP3?
If primarily streaming FLAC/MP3, would you like the convenience of not having to use a tablet/laptop?
How good is your broadband connection?

The DAB is not really an issue as it can be fulfilled by Internet Radio.

For me I have a google chromecast for the kitchen hooked up to the Kitchen DAB for streaming music.

My other two systems are a Pioneer Networked AV Receiver and an older Marantz Receiver (not networked) combined with a Denon Network Audio Player with an identical interface to this N4.

Although I can control both devices with an android tablet for music navigation I find myself with the Denon and the Pioneer, just simply looking at the display, navigating the menus for playing my FLAC. I do like the convenience of an integral display rather than having to rely on another device.

Obviously streaming music in the kitchen however I am dependent on the tablet for selecting from my NAS drive.

Cannot really tell you which is the 'best' option, just giving you some food for thought.

I
After a bit of hesitation got these yesterday to replace my broken active speakers (Roth Oli Powa 5 I think). Now, I am quite glad to find out that others seem to agree that it's a good deal.

So far very happy - the set looks really good, the speakers are quite small but sound really well, not quite sure what What-Hifi didn't like about them? (Review here - whathifi.com/den…iew )

It's also nice to have internet radio and spotify connect in addition to bluetooth. It also has an optical input so will connect my TV to it.

Keep in mind that if you want to connect your own speakers, there's a hidden setting somewhere to switch off speaker optimisation that's meant for the Denon speakers included in the set. Supposedly, it messes up sound a bit when other speakers are used.

Make sure to buy the extended warranty, it's really worth it. Without it I'd still be stuck with my half broken Roth Oli Powa's
Same price at Argos ?? (If you can find stock).

Cheaper I suppose with a £10 voucher from Argos.....

It seems to be although the specification is different, a review suggests the description is of the N5 model.

Even so, I checked stock in about 10 cities around the country and couldn't find any stock anywhere.

Oh I see, I didn't read all the posts...well its useful advice then for djdope to mull over.

There was a [problem] with many a Denon/Marantz (same group) Network Receiver last August whereby there was a couple of days outage due to a erroneous response with a server request. After initial vague information from D&M Holdings the issue was rapidly fixed.

Other than that, I have to say I have been impressed with network streaming, gapless FLAC playback etc. I have owned my Denon Network Streamer for around 3 years now. Clearly the interface has not changed, and if not broke it doesn't need fixing.

Refer to my #10. Just to add with regards sound quality, I doubt at these sort of price points on mini systems you are going to get much of a difference. Power output wise the N4 has 10W per channel extra at 40W per channel, and bear in mind the DM40 comes without speakers for around £180. They both have one analogue input with the DM40 having an advantage of having 1 extra (2) digital optical inputs on the rear.

I really am getting confused.... :-)

Not noticing the speakers aint included is an easy mistake for "Thoughtful" to make but its a bit odd to continue arguing that they are included even after the oversight has been pointed out.

Perhaps he has started on the weekend vino already - I cleary have

I think a simple apology and explanation of the error would have sufficed instead of trying to lay blame elsewhere To err is human (whether male of female)

At least you know in future if you ever post any deals to look beyond the shopping results, Peter Tyson would have been even cheaper if they had thrown the speakers into the equation.

I'm pretty sure you can. You can set the alarm to wake you with a track from your ipod so imagine a DAB alarm is a piece of cake.

Here's the manual.

Sorry, are you confusing with the DM40 that has been discussed here? This unit does not have DAB, it has Internet Radio and an alarm clock whereby you can select which input source and volume it comes on at. Manual [here]

Oh ok so i can in theory have the internet radio wake me up? About to pull the trigger, but if this could be confirmed?

Thanks

Schoolboy error X) Never noticed the 'X's under tuner X)
