What exactly does this do? Is it just a replacement for a faulty drive or does the 'modified' bit mean there's more to it than meets the eye?

what does this do? or is it obvious?

Google is your friend

I have been looking but haven't found a clear answer. If this allows similar playback opportunity's offered by modding the original xbox and it's just a case of swapping the drives over then this seems like it would be well worth the money. Shame I don't have a slim xbox though!

Cold, freezing cold.

An XBOX 360 DVD drive is paired to the console. To replace a drive on a XBOX 360 the DVD key needs to be extracted from the original drive and inserted into the replacement. You won't just be able to buy this and use it.

As above you cannot just swap the drive each drive has its own key which is assigned to the motherboard
if you had the EXACT same drive in your xbox and that drive had died you could swap the PCB board out into the new one and that would work

The only other reason you would buy this is if you wanted to allow your xbox to play copied games which i cant disclose how to do ;]

Agreed the only use I can see for this is for playing your backup games, but in order to do that you would have to flash the new drive with your old drive keys, no one has managed to do that yet with a slim, and it could be days before someone(c4eva) does and releases......;]
