1.14 for both at asda pretty much everywhere afaik

Asda will always be cheaper because they don't employ people in their petrol stations

Fuel prices are never national, one Esso may be selling it for 116.9 per litre, and another down the road may be selling it for 117.9.

why are petrol and diesel suddenly a couple of pence or even a just a penny apart?? have I missed something?

Basically wholesale diesel is now cheaper than petrol. According to the FTA, the wholesale UK prices today (ex VAT but including duty) are:
Unleaded: 94.04 ppl
Diesel: 88.59 ppl

Accordingly diesel should be more than 1p cheaper!!!

Wholesale diesel prices actually fell to less than petrol months ago. Hardly fair practice is it!
