Digihome PVR80 80GB Hard Drive Recorder Grade A

It's £45 for a twin tuner Freeview PVR, which Argos used to sell new for £100, what do you expect?

Bigpockets have it cheaper £39.99 inc. VAT (£45.98 delivered).

Absolutely agree with you. Mine's in a spare room but does the job brilliantly.

Yup. Needs a serial cable from a PC/Laptop. I have the firmware for download (if anyone wants it) and can point to the simple instructions to apply it.

I expect very little but hope that people that post deals include basic info such as whether it’s new or contains dual tuners.

Or excess stock.
If you know retail, you'll know excess stock is often sold as grade 'a' or 'b', at a reduced price, and with a reduced warranty, so as not to impact on the price of new stuff.

Just because it's grade 'a', it doesn't follow that the stuff is 2nd hand or "bust & patched up", there's an equally good chance it's excess stock (maybe because Argos have moved onto something else).

"Refurbished" is 2nd hand or bust & patched up, grade 'a' isn't the same thing.
If something is 2nd hand, or refurbished, the retailer must say so.

In fact, ebuyer say "Grade A Goods are "Factory Reconditioned" to the Manufacturers original specification. All goods supplied are 30 day high street store (30 days) returned products. With grade A stock there is always a chance that there may be a minor cosmetic mark, Considering the price however these are considered to be very minor and will not affect performance of the product".

Grade 'a' is more often, than not, just stuff that's been hanging around in warehouses, or stuff with a tatty external box.

Of course, if you'd rather pay twice the price for a brand new one (on the off-chance the grade 'a' one will pack up in a year or two), that's your choice.
I'd rather pay half now, and the same again in a few years, if needed.

Just to let people know, I got mine on thurs and I'm pretty sure its new, no marks or anything!

p.s. Anyone got any idea how to get a serial cable connectted to a laptop? this ibm doesnt seem to have one! I could do with one to update the firmware.

Oh I agree with you... or I would IF it WAS excess UNOPENED stock, and if it WAS half the price ( ACTUALLY ABOUT 40% or less is more my idea of a price for used gear) - I am NO snob with secondhand gear, but 99% of the stuff getting posted isn't either of these things, and in no way is any sort of "hot deal"

We all know that some products have a HUGE returns rate - and PVRs are probably the single most unreliable bit of kit introduced over the past 20 years, so no shortage of returns there! Even good ones crash and miss recording sessions.

Over the years I have had con-men repack old junk on numerous occasions and send it out - my first Orange phone for example in the 90s sticks particularly in my throat - at the time 200 quid-a-go with contract, then it busts, as many did, and they send you back a used 2nd hand old banger with badly soldered-in replacement component, and a wipe down with isopropyl alcohol apparently makes it "new" again!

Similarly, I am happy with a £550 (retail) cooker, dented slightly on one side that I paid £180 quid for, that defect is cosmetic, not functionally damaged, and permanently hidden by kitchen units, and was still unassembled and totally unused - that definitely wasn't secondhand, but plenty of stuff you get from say, Argos bought as new has been out of the box and stuffed back in, God knows how long it was in use:-(

I just can not believe how people are so easily suckered into buying at the prices we see - Grade A means patched up but not hammered about, Grade B means it IS hammered about, and half missing!

Is it not updatable by writing a CD or DVD?

Does this have the series recording facility? If so will it record the prog if it is at a different time each week or day?

£45.98 at Bigpockets V £50.03 at ebuyer using cheapest delivery option!! Both have stock.

No

Visual "how to" on updating the firmware.

You'll need a male-to-female serial cable
