Cancún, a Mexican city on the Yucatán Peninsula bordering the Caribbean Sea, is known for its beaches, numerous resorts and nightlife. It’s composed of 2 distinct areas: the more traditional downtown area, El Centro, and Zona Hotelera, a long, beachfront strip of high-rise hotels, nightclubs, shops and restaurants. Cancun is also a famed destination for students during universities’ spring break period. ― Google

2 weeks in January. Was very hot, cloudy in Cancun, beautifully sunny in Playa. Spent 3 nights in Cancun and 11 in Playa and travelled around from there, hiring a car for the final
    3 days.
From Cancun airport avoid all the “taxi taxi” abuse and head straight down to gate 8. Here you can gat an ADO bus into Cancun for a snip of the price.
I went from Cancun to playa (Stayed at Calle 38 Nte 3, very central to everything) from the main bus terminal using the ADO coach bus, about an hour journey and cheap.
You can get around so easily from Playa using the collevtivo’s (public transport vans) that you flag down for next to nothing) how the locals travel! They all speak good English so don’t worry if you don’t speak the lingo! They too go to Tulum and all of the surrounding areas of interest.
Don’t worry, it’s safe as houses! There is a very very high presence of police and military driving around constantly. As a lone female I felt more than comfortable walking around in the dark!
Only just got back, but at this price I want to go again!!

Hey how did you time playa Del carmen as a solo traveller? Is it safe? (edited)

Just come back from Mexico. Fantastic Holiday.

Really tempted to go back straightaway at these prices.

Stayed at the Bahia Principe Akumal - amazing. Really good food and great staff.

We've stayed there too, wonderful time we had too

I'd recommend leaving Cancun immediately. It's over Americanised and full of tourist crap - not for me. You've travelled all that way make the most of it instead on lazing around a single hotel.

If you want to see the real Yacutan head towards Bacalar and Valladolid (edited)

The Hotel Zone in Cancun is horrible, yeah, but proper downtown Cancun is alright.

Highly recommend Bacalar & Valladolid too, and Merida and Izamal. Or Isla Murjeres if you don't want to travel that far from the airport. (edited)

    Rainy season right?

The wet season in Cancun begins in June, with hurricanes and tropical storms more likely from September to October, although they can start as early as June. Even if you are visiting Cancun during the wet season, it is unlikely to rain for prolonged periods unless there is a tropical storm.

No it isn't, the best time to visit Cancun is between November and March

The Grand at Moon Palace if you want everything and more for both adult and kids, loads of different restaurants (a la carte), best auditorium shows, unlimited room service etc

Think you may just catch the tail end of the US Spring break during the early March dates

I've been around this time of year, it is perfect, sunny but some clouds and some rain in the afternoons.

I'd recommend heading south to Tulum if you want a quieter experience, I've stayed here:

If it weren't for the kids I'd be on that flight already
    tom6195's avatar
How safe is Tulum? Is it easy enough to get to from Cancun? I'd be going solo (35m)

Anyone recommend a decent hotel but at a budget price plz guys ?

Would depend on a lot of different factors.

    1. Do you want to sit on the beach all day
    2. Prefer to spend time in the hotel
    3. Prefer to be able to walk to “life”
    4. Taking kids
    5. Adult only
    6. So many other things to consider which are too many to list
    7. All inclusive?
    8. Etc

    Don't forget mandatory international visitor's tax .

Been 5times since its introduction and was only aware of it about 6 months ago. You can't pay for it at the airport and seemingly no one checks you paid it when you arrive and depart the airport (never been asked yet), so I personally would put the money aside, just in case and forget about it.

Any good for kids? Particularly a 9 month old? Would love to travel around but not sure if it’s easier to stay in one place. Also I can’t see those prices from Manchester? (edited)
