I just searched and got a flight from MAN for £193. Includes a 24 hour layover in New York coming back, which will be great or a nightmare depending on your point of view. Other wise plenty for about £200 with no long layover

The West Coast line isn’t operated by Virgin anymore, so they’re not responsible for the price of the rail fares.
Great deal indeed. Would love to go, just need a travel buddy!
If you don't fancy LA, hire a car and drive up the coast through Big Sur to San Francisco. Then out to Yosemite, down through Death Valley to Las Vegas. Out over the Hoover Dam to the Grand Canyon. On to Monument Valley, then back to Las Vegas via Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park. Back to Los Angeles via Joshua Tree and Palm Springs.

When visiting SF, I recommend hiring a bike and cycling around Golden Gate Park and over the bridge and back.
