Discounts bonus for Amex cardholders

Found 5th Jun 2012
American Express cardholders with a smartphone can get discounts at restaurants such as Pizza Express and major retailers including Tesco via the foursquare app.

They can net some decent bargains such as £10 off a £10+ spend at Nando's, but only on one-off spends.

Offers can also be used with discount vouchers or in a sale. So it's possible to use a 2-for-1 voucher in a restaurant and the app-based deal, as long as you meet the full criteria.

Anyone with an Amex card where the logo is on a blue background qualifies, which is any personal credit card (including Lloyds TSB, MBNA and Virgin-issued cards), but not corporate or prepaid cards.

The foursquare app is available free on iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Windows, Palm and Ovi Nokia.

You can redeem each of the following deals once.

Restaurants:

Nando's. Spend over £10 and get a £10 credit
Bella Italia. Spend over £10 and get a £10 credit
Café Rouge. Spend over £10 and get a £10 credit
Strada. Spend over £10 and get a £10 credit
Pizza Express. Spend over £10 and get a £10 credit
Eat. Spend over £5 and get a £5 credit
Shops:

House of Fraser. Spend over £10 and get a £10 credit
Tesco. Spend over £5 and get a £5 credit
Primark. Spend over £5 and get a £5 credit (excludes concession stores)
These are the first nine deals under the scheme, though more are planned.

How it works:

Get the app. Download it for free to your smart phone and set up an account.
Sync your card. Go to the American Express website and link your Amex to your foursquare account. This can also be done via the app if you're near one of the retailers offering the deal.
Search for deals. When you're near a place offering the deal, load up the app and an orange 'special' box will appear next to participating venues. Tap the location to check it's the right deal.
Check in, load the deal & pay. 'Check in' (logging your location) to the restaurant or shop on the app, click 'load to card' on your phone and then spend the required amount on your synced Amex card. You don't need to show the deal/app, it should automatically know you've registered.
Wait for the cash. It should appear as a credit to your card within 3-5 days from payment, but in the worst cases, it may take up to two billing periods to show.

Indeed. I think OP's list details them all.

Don't all cards peddle offers like this. I'm forever getting loyalty offers from my card providers.
Well it sounds good to me. Thanks mayur12
Don't forget the Annual Fee for Amex Cards.
You can get a amex card with no fees
I have the platnium card is that one not included?
I will never use a credit card which charges an annual fee! Such stupidity!
Fantastic Deal!

"Don't all cards peddle offers like this. I'm forever getting loyalty offers from my card providers"
No other cards give you 10% AA insurance and 5% off windows and doors, load of rubbish, this is a proper deal, why is it not hotter???
Wow.... This is going to get loads of stupid replies by MORONS.

Not all Amex cards charge a fee

Paying a fee is not always a bad thing, I paid a £10 fee once that gave me over £300 cash back and a few other really good benefits, at the time this was by the far best choice for me.

Thanks OP.

I set mine up last week, and used it for the first time at Tesco on Monday.

The offer for Cafe Rouge popped up whilst I was at Gatwick yesterday, but I didn't get chance to take advantage of it.

You don't know what you are missing, nor do you know what you are talking about.
Annual fee cards are NOT for everyone, only those who can benefit from the perks.

I have a BA Amex Premium card £150 annual fees - but by using it over two years, i have accumulated 160,000 Avios mile
Plus I get 2for1 vouchers on British Airways. This translates into 4 Business class Tickets to the US.
Totally worth the £300 I paid in fees thank you very much.

Other cards with annual fees have different types of rewards, just to suit everyone's different needs - so don't just bash them without investigating first. People who go for them are not stupid mate.

I have two creditcards, pay a yearly fee for them and I am even paying a monthly fee for my current account...I must be the ubermoron then...but wait...saves me about 400quid a year of things I would have bought anyway (insurance, AA and so on...) plus I get a decent interest rate for a current account (another few pounds on top not much but enough for a meal out with the missus...priceless)...if that is the climax of stupidity then I promote myself to Master of Stupidity, Sir.:{
nice app
just applied for the BA AMEX, the rewards look fab!

Isn't the APR like something crazy on that card though? I was thinking of applying but then I saw the APR...!

But yeah, I have the standard BA Amex as well as the Lloyds TSB Avios Duo. No annual fees on them to those that think all Amex cards have fees.
Not all AMEX cards are Credit Cards!
Platinum cards are also included in this offer.
HOT
Mines a product redcard amex is on a black background but it is a personal credit card, I wonder if this is included?
If they don't have the contactless technology as mandatory i'd be tempted (MBNA do now....)
how to link accounts!!

Slightly OT – but when credit card providers calculate a “representative APR” for a product, the APR calculation has to include any annual fees. This has the effect that credit cards with annual fees end up with a very high calculated APR. The APR is NOT representative of the interest you pay each month on spending. This is because the APR includes interest charges AND fees.

So for the BA Premium Plus Card – the annual fee is £150 – so the APR including this fee is 50.1%. However the interest rate for purchases is 19.9% . 19.9% is the same rate as the BA Amex which you say you have.

Do you still need to pay all the taxes and surcharges as this equates to alot of the cost of the flight? Going to florida hopefully next year and spend roughly £20k a year on credit card so this could be useful. Currently have an amex just getting 1% cashback.
good deal!
I have a platinum card but have set everything up okay on that card.
Super deal! Thanks for posting this. So let me get this straight, if I buy a nandos at say £12 I will get £10 credit in my Amex account! If so how many times can you do this?

Yes, which is why you'd be silly to use them towards economy class tickets where the taxes and fees make up a large percentage of the purchase price. Better saving until you have points to use on business or first class tickets.

Think of it not so much as getting free flights, but getting business class or better flights for the "cost" of an economy flight.

Yes it would be great if every time you used your credit card you got a tenner off. Then if you spent just over ten pounds you would effectively live for free. Then maybe the shops and restaurants would recognise that rather than incurring all the costs of collecting money and giving it back they should give everything away for free.
cracking deal, tied it in with my Nectar amex card so getting discounts and nectar points too
This is a super hot deal, I have a (free) platinum AE card I hardly ever use, who can turn down free food.... hot hot hot

Says one time per card in the T&C's for each restaurant chain.
How do you link it for the Virgin Cards? Do not seem to have the option (login through Virgin Site - do not have login for Amex site).

That sounded sarcastic? Personally I think getting the following for nothing is pretty good:

£10 quidco cashback
20,000 avios which is enough for 2 flights to Paris but you pay the taxes of £27 per return booking (if you spend £1,000 in first 3 months)
2 airport VIP passes

So all in all then if you spend £1k in the first 3 months then it costs £44 net to fly two people to Paris and back and you get airport lounge access on one of the legs!

Plus of course if you keep your money in your current account for the month and pay the card at the end of the month you might make some interest on that too!
