Jasmine is a princess, so it's a film with a princess in, so, a princess movie. Moana isn't a princess but that's in there too.

So, by that logic, any story to even feature a princess, is a princess movie; therefore why not include the lion king?

This is a commercial exercise by the behemoth that is disney, they have decided frozen and the lion king will probably sell anyways, especially with the 2019 movie releases... and the black cauldron was/is considered a blot in the disney back catalogue.

Lion King doesn't have a princess in it. That's why it's not in the Disney Princess collection.

It seems to be if there's a female lead, or a princess in the film (but not the main character), it's classed as a Princess film. Mulan, Pocahontas and Moana aren't princesses. Two are daughters of village Chiefs so, that's like a technicality and they get allowed in. Never know why Mulan is included.
"While Mulan isn't born a princess or married to a prince, she does demonstrate heroic behavior with all she does for her country. So Disney allows her to be a Princess by their definition of the Princess Mythology."

Apparently, this is why.
The lack of Frozen is weird. That one has *two* princesses
Mulan is a princess to appeal to the Asian market... pretty much the same reason a black princess was used in the princess and the frog

The whole Disney Princesses brand came about because one of the top bods noticed girls dressing up as the princesses in the Disney parks and such, and realised there was a prime opportunity to provide quality dress-up outfits for kids. It’s since expanded.

So probably why Lion King isn’t included, you can’t exactly dress up as a lion easily.

Indeed, commercialisation is also the reason why Eilonwy and infact, Kida aren't included here... incidentally, the absolute phenomenal commercial success of Frozen, stops Elsa and Anna being included.

As for Eilonwy... she might yet get her rightful place amongst Disney Princesses, that is obviously attached to whether Disney ever remakes the Prydian chronicles... dont hold your breath...
