To anyone who flies drones do you have the licences or are they pointless?

Just so were clear as a couple of these replies have opinions not facts and people mentioning operator and flyer IDs.

Sub 250g just require you to register as an operator ID about £10 a year.
You do not need to take a Flyers test and obtain a Flyer ID.

If going to europe you will need to get an EASA ID and take a test no matter what drone. You have to take the test on the national website for the first country you are visiting but it will be then be valid for 5yrs to fly within any EU country.

I had to do it on the french site which was interesting. 180mins of course material (it says) and an hr to take a 40 multiple choice question test.

    Hope that helps.

I have this as my first drone. Footage is awesome, in my opinion. Easy to fly, did the CAA test for operators ID, you have to get 75% pass mark. People complain about the range but to be honest once it gets 150-200m out you can't see it and you're supposed to have visual line of sight.

strobe lights can be added to maintain LOS legally. You're supposed to have lights on the aircraft anyway if you want to fly at dusk as I see many do without them.

Not a bad price. But was £255 at Argos like 6months ago with the flymore kit which is essential for the extra batteries.

Great beginner drone the signal is the only let down imho. Rather poor unless there's lots of open space. The footage looks totally fine and battery life is good though.

Iirc that was the mini 1 the argos deal.

Why does it say to register your drone when the CAA says only the operator needs to be registered, not the drone.
    Avatar
Normally with the little sub 250g drones, you don't need a flyer id or operator id, but because this has a camera you do need to register it via the Civil Aviation Authority website and get a unique operator id (cost £10). The id then needs to be attached to the drone. As the flyer id is free to obtain, (also via the CAA website) after passing a pretty basic online test, it's worth getting as it gives you a better understanding of the legalities of flying and i reckon all drone pilots will require a flyer id in the not to distant future anyway.

How's this compare with the mini 2?
    Avatar

    Replying to

There was so many antennas around and over 100 people using phones so drone didn’t even connect to remote control.

What’s the next one up ? Is it worth it.
    Avatar
The Mini2 is the next one up and is much better. Improved camera and much stronger connection meaning it can fly further. Much pricier though. The SE is very very good as a starter drone.

Excellent item - the film quality is really great esp if you play with the settings, 2.7k is enough to look very very nice on a normal sized screen

the range is good for line of site and a bit beyond, which is all i ever plan on filming anyways

I would suggest starting slow and making sure you check every time for updates for the app, the firmware, and the flysafe database

Does this come with a grenade cradle??

    Good price.

£379 for the mini 2, using the same code, which is really cheap.

Oh lordy. I might have to bite at this price point

I'm hanging on for this too, although I'm looking at the Mini 2 Fly More.

Is there going to be a mini 3 non pro, there's a big jump between the 2 and the 3? Crashed my mini 1 and missing being able to fly. Was tempted by the £231 but experiencing a bit of budget creep currently.....

These are worse than most back of the cupboard items. Hardly anyone can film and edit watchable footage.
    Avatar
The DJI app itself has a really basic but decent video editor that anyone can pick up. I take my drone on holiday and have some made some great 3 minute videos of the memories.

Make sure you get a new one. Look for scuffs and scratches. If in doubt return.
