Hi all.

Found this amazing, quick and free app that shows you your closest, free DNS servers.

Very helpful for me.

Can someone explain the benefit of this please?

Your Web browser > asks dns server what the ip address is > gives your Web browser ip address returns value > loads Web page

The quicker your route to the dns server (in ms) the quicker it will resolve the ip address for the website you want to visit. So the quicker it will load. We are talking ms here so you may not notice much of a difference between services. Normally isp dns are the quickest as its on their own network compared to one in the US. But see note below as isp dns servers log activity.

Use this app to find out which dns server is quickest in ms for your connection. The lower the ms the quicker the dns resolves.

Just remember most dns providers log some sort of data (how they make their money) so you may want to read their privacy policies before committing. But some advantages of third party dns can be malware blocking and ad blocking. I personally use adguard through dnscrpyt.

I can't see the point of this unless you are running your own dns servers or you are having problems with your current provider. You will not notice the difference between a few ms here or there.

Exactly, pointless app, even on a website laden with adds and redirects I doubt you notice a difference.

And whats to say it's not going to recommend one that has been compromised, stick with 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1.

I just use my vpn providers dns servers which is nordvpn at the moment.
If you don't have a vpn though this seems a great idea.

I can also recommend Brave Browser, built in malware/script blocking, excellent browser. Slow to load up but once it's running it's great. Once it gets updated to v1.0 it will support all Chrome extensions. It has a basic amount built in which you can enable.
Pi-Hole routing to OpenDNS every day of the week for me.

Just given it a quick try - it only seems to recommend DNS providers I've sort of heard of including 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1 and it doesn't set the DNS server for you so you check before you decide to use it. Might help with comparing the alternatives and its a very small app.

Yeah it's nothing absolutely amazing but with how quick and simple it is, it's great for me for what I need it for.

8.8.8.8 hands down

Wrong, 1.1.1.1 is consistently faster than Goggle 8.8.8.8 in the DNS comparison sites and by a considerable ammount
If you are on a PC there this excellent tool too: grc.com/dns…htm

8.8.8.8 hands down

I'm a geek and I measure lots of things about my home network, including responsive of various services over my home broadband.
I've found that Google's 2nd provider, 8.8.4.4, is generally faster.

Or, for those of you living in THIS century, 2001:4860:4860::8844 and 2001:4860:4860::8888
