Thanks for the pointer dcx_badass

Don’t forget that a Core 2 Duo E4400 is ~£83 shipped from Ebuyer with the Google discount.
It’s a 2GHz 800 MHz FSB chip, so if you increase the FSB to 1066 which is the same as the current mainstream Core 2 Duos, you get 2.67 GHz which is the same as the E6700.

This is a soft over-clock as the RAM, Speedstep and voltage settings will be the same for both chips, so it’s about as low risk as you get. It’s not 100% guaranteed but judging from how good C2D is the odds are massively stacked in your favour.
The one remaining difference will be the 4Mb cache of the E6700 versus 2MB of the E4400, which on average makes about a 5% performance difference.

I think this is one of the best value soft over-clocking CPUs for quite a while and the performance will comfortably beat the fastest AMD X2 (6000+) overall and consume much less power at load.
I was just about to buy one of the 65nm X2s when I came across this instead and ordered one. You don’t need a high end motherboard to run it either and some of the cheapish 945 chipset boards may well also support this over-clock, although I can’t confirm that. I paid £65 for a decent Gigabyte P965 board that officially supports 1333 FSB and quad cores for a bit of future proofing.

Which P965 mobo was that exactly? Thinking of getting one of these C2Ds myself and quad core compatible, 1333 FSB support sounds pretty good to me

I'm not tempted yet! A price drop is due next week & these may then be even cheaper.

I went for the 965P-S3; only the Rev 3.3 officially supports 1333 FSB:

I think the official 1333 FSB support means that the BIOS will allow you to run the new 1333 FSB Core 2 Duos which are due later in the year, without having to over-clock your RAM. It would be nice if they also support the 45nm Quads due at the end of the year. :santa:

By the time you have added import duty & VAT that becomes about £137 so we are not so far off. I would let the dust settle for a week before deciding what is cheap & what isn't with C2D.

I think the main thing is quad-core support, gives good scope for upgrading at some point. Thanks again for pointing me at the gigabyte board, cheers!

Has anyone seen signs of the April 22nd price drop yet? Still £174 on ebuyer, and I expected prices to drop below the current £152. These are $235 on newegg.com!

tekheads.co.uk/s/p…806

if you want to save 5p off the original deal posted which I can't see when I click on the link...lol

Cheers, Tekheads are indeed excellent, but I'd have to add shipping costs to that (I get free delivery with Scan).

£152 delivered is still too high as it was only £10-£20 more a few weeks ago. If this is the extent of the price cut then it was hardly worth waiting for!

Don't forget that import duty & VAT need adding to the US price - $235 becomes around £143. The expected US price cut was from $316 to $224. This should give a UK price of around £136 in a couple of days when it has all worked through.

Patience might pay - they are only just getting up in USA!

Chris

Thanks Chris, I see that Scan now have it for just under £147 on the "Today only" page. I'll hold on till the end of the week
