I've been looking for something like this under £10 on ebay, then realised I still have some credit on Amazon and found this one even cheaper. Sometimes it pays to check Amazon for cheaper things too
Short review:

The price is £13.99 but there is a promotion knocking off another £6.
Choose Amazon locker 1-day delivery & the postage will be only £1.99, if you don't have Prime.

I've checked a few reviews on Youtube and there's definitely three ports. Do you know something I don't?

Wouldn't that mean one extra usb though? It looks like there's actually a fourth that you plug in to your laptop, so 3usb as described.

What would the use of the ethernet adapter be for?

If like me, you have to support 2in1 devices that don't have a network port and your office doesn't have wifi, then it's very useful.
Add in the fact that it can live on my desk with a proper keyboard and mouse it makes my life a lot easier

I do travel a lot and some hotels provide paid WiFi and free ethernet connection. Even if they have free WiFi, the cable connection is much faster as the kids usually ruin the free WiFi watching youtube videos all the time.
General rule of thumb: If you don't know what it is for, you don't need it

Because Wi-Fi is generally useless for anything more than basic connectivity. Many new Laptops come without an ethernet port now to allow laptop to be slimmer. This adds a gigabit ethernet port at 1000Mbps....useful for video streaming, large file transfer

So it adds an Internet connection via the USB outs?

yes. The Adaptor connects to USB port and adds extra USB and an Ethernet port.

So do I, do you happen to know what gadget is needed to split the WiFi when they give you a wifi code and it's only for one device?

For many years I'm using this one: netgear.co.uk/hom…spx

I'm sure someone will point you better direction as this is (even still working) pretty old tech to waste your money on.

Beyond all the computer related uses given, major one currently is adding ethernet support to wireless media players, ie Chromecasts, FireTVs etc. Now Amazon have removed the ethernet port from the latest FireTV they are even selling their own branded version to add it back again but it's nearly twice the price
