Think you have to factor in the customs tax. Have only had it once but it could be on any order.

You should have appealed to customs then as they apply the rates and you should not have been charged that much for a £30 item.

What is this customs insurance that you mention?

I bet 3/4 of that was an admin charge though.
Is it £11 for admin?

Don't see the big deal. Root it, remove any problem apps, unroot. Job done..
Don't think the Samsungs, Motorolas, apples of this world are squeaky clean either. In this day and age, all smartphones will monitor you. If they don't, then I will eat my Chinese Zuk z2 phone with ketchup. :-D

Or even get hold of the factory firmware and remove any potential offending apps (if any are sgown to be present) and repack the firmware.

Yup.. 2 solutions to a problem that might not exist. It's not really a reason to disregard these cheap handsets unless warranties a requirement.
be interesting to know if its a global rom with play store, ive asked them so lets see. im after a 100-150 range phone for my daughter to replace her redmi note 3 (smashed screen) and something like this might fit the bill if its global

Just lists the sensors as Proximity Sensor, Ambient light sensor, G-Sensor, Fingerprint Sensor, so doesn't look like it does.

How do you root ? By using more malware ? Rooted phones are not safe either , therefore banking apps are designed not to work on them . No security updates either. Deliberately buy a lemon and curse your luck later.

Most of the people here don't even know what spyware is installed because it is hidden. I only knew when I scanned with all the anti virus software and found more than 10 spyware baked in the Doogee phone. Also not all virus was detected by all antivirus. When I spoke with Doogee they said to root phone and lose warranty . What pathetic company will sell phone with Virus inside and if you root ,you lose warranty. Plus rooted phones are not safe either, that is why banking apps do not work.

Unfortunately it was correct 20% VAT + £8 administration fee which is standard. Not sure if there's a way to avoid paying the admin fee. I imagine declaring the liability upfront is the answer but that is probably the duty of the supplier.

I appreciate what you're saying about banking apps. What I was suggesting was root to remove any problem apps then un-root back to stock. In all honesty I've never had Malwarebyes, AVG, Avast, Norton or McAfee flag a rooted phone as infected solely due to root even with KingRoot.

I suspect if the truth be known we'd all be shocked at the amount of data collecting going on with Android and other OS's for government snooping. A good case in point was Kryptowire exposing Adups on an unrooted Blu R1. We should all be checking for that!
When I got mine last time it was posted for £110.85 from Banggood, I did not have to pay any custom duty. It is a big and heavy phone though with some irritating ads which I have not found a way to remove yet. Camera looks lovely.

Try AlliExpress, quite safe to buy from as they hold your money up until you confirm that goods received.
What's the maximum value before you have to pay import duty + VAT?
Does different products have different import rates?

I guess the VAT must be paid regardless of value of the product.

You are talking out of your sit upon, I have sourced lots of Doogee phones for people and never had a problem with any model. Also never had customs problems, but there again I live in Spain. Doogee are very good phones with a very good reliability record, just don't believe the trolls who are just mischief making with false stories of unreliability, the same usernames appear all over the place.

Yes , You can build a great reputation selling spyware and virus. There is no problem unless you find out what is happening in the background . Just because spyware is hidden in hacked versions of apps which cannot be removed , does not make it any better. On face of it , the specs and price look excellent, that is why I fell for it. But they are subsidising the phones by selling virus and spyware inside them and sooner or later some of your customers are going to find out.

As an owner of one of the bargain basement Android tablets that I bought off Gearbest, I fully agree with this.
Send it by standard/basic post option and you'll never pay tax. 30 plus items ordered as such and never been taxed. Most items now shipped to Europe then forwarded on to UK to avoid problems. Might need to wait a couple of weeks (or longer if on pre-sale) but maximises the savings. If you chose an expedited service then tax is almost guaranteed as the mail service gains from the admin fee.

Have had this phone for 3 weeks. Love it, no complaints except perhaps the camera could be improved - which would be great as the screen is the best I've had for outside use from a Chinese phone. My 3rd Doogee/Homtom and all have been OK.

The difference is, on mainstream phones it is bloat ware which is easily removable due to the somewhat half-decent EU requirements of phone companies not to be selling malware infested handsets in order to be resold in the U.K.

These Chinese phones are impossible to remove the spyware from, and rooting them does not work -- since it's embedded into their firmware (anyone saying otherwise either doesn't know how it works or is lying). You'd need to flash it with custom firmware and risk bricking the handset -- I found this out the hard way after scanning it with MBAM. Wouldn't touch any of these spyware infested Chinese phones with a barge pole knowing what I know now...

Use Paypal then, most resellers offer it and it covers you (more) for any DOA issues.

Doesn't work like that unfortunately. If it were that easy, everyone would have done it.

Most of these phones either cannot be rooted or have read only firmware that can't be flashed without paying for PC programs that hack them and need custom firmware for the specific handset you have in order to do this anyway. At that point (and after import customs is added) might as well just buy a half decent phone here in the U.K. with comparable specs for a few dozen quid more and call it a day.
Have been buying these phones for many many years and my bank account and all other 'accounts' have remained remarkably unhacked.

I found there to be far more risk simply giving CC details to a UK based airport car park firm on their secure website, who then promptly used it to gamble on Bet247. Twice.
