Could you do a pic/video of the screen quality for us ? I could not find a thing online

Not totally frill-free, either. See the manual (PDF). It's got a web browser and an email client.

Heat added.

Looks decent for a new-old style phone but for £5 less you could get an Android phone instead.

I saw a basic one on Argos for £1.99 and £4.99 so it kind of cancels this one from being worth it.

3G and 4G are what's used nowadays so you got a fair point there.

The mail button and assistance buttons are great things, its a shame none of the big players incorporate such instead of volume and power, 2G will be dead as a dodo soon, more than a few countries networks are shutting it down and re-farming to 3G/4G because with data you make more money than a 2G call or text, I expect UK wont be long given we are heading for a 700mhz kick off of Freeview from it.

Is this really the cheapest 3G "simple phone" in the UK?

// 3G is needed to use the 3 network, who seem to have the most reasonable 'occasional use' payg offering. But any smart phone seems a step too far for the very agéd parent ...

Ummm. Not sure how this could be used as a 3G modem.
Seems not to have WiFi - so absolutely all 'data' use would be on your phone's airtime, which could be costly.
Now, if it had wifi and could act as a hotspot, that alone should sell it, albeit to a slightly different demographic!

Tethered via cable to a computer/laptop/netbook has a big advantage over hotspot - battery. Yes still do it in situations where no wifi or the cost of broadband to the speed is uneconomic. Windows Live Mail app can be a godsend.

I find the more handsets I use for hotspot always run into problems, I'm sure they are frying themselves, even worse when plugged in the heat can be hot to touch on all OS - that is not doing sensitive phone parts any good.

I may get this for the email client with a Anywhere sim if the screen is better than my current modem/roaming Alcatel 20.45X

Sorry, but since you don't have one of these yet, how do you know that you CAN tether it as a usb-connected modem for a computer, let alone a tablet?
The manual (linked above) describes usb connection (to a computer only) and ONLY describes file transfer ...

Like I said, I can't see how THIS phone could be used as a modem.
Interesting to note that the Alcatel 20.45 3G 'simple phone' (only slightly more expensive than this) can be used in that way.

I dont, thats why I have not bought one yet until I can go into a o2 store. Most 3G phones allow modem use, my assumption is this will too, but I need o2 to confirm as it is a o2 exclusive so tethering may be possible.
